Commercial/Japan
From Transformers Wiki
The uniqueness of American Generation 1 Transformers commercials helped the line become a cultural phenomenon in the U.S. By contrast, Takara's G1 commercials, or "CM"s, were considerably more generic. Commercials for Fight! Super Robot Lifeform Transformers and Fight! Super Robot Lifeform Transformers 2010 have a distinctive Gregorian style "Trans-for-mer" chant at the end of them, but there was not much else to set them apart from other mecha toy commercials. They made use of the same type of stop motion animation that was used not only in commercials for Takara's Transformers predecessors Micro Change and Diaclone but for various other mecha toys including Gundam, GoLion, and even as far back as 1975 for Himitsu Sentai Goranger's toyline. The stop motion style of commercial is still used by TakaraTomy as evidenced by the advertising for Transformers Animated.
Curiously, Fight! Super Robot Lifeform Transformers and Fight! Super Robot Lifeform Transformers 2010 commercials (even some of those not re-using US commercial footage) made use of several variations of the US theme songs, despite the fact that said theme songs were not used for the Japanese dubs of the cartoon. A few variants were even recorded specifically for the Japanese commercials, such as the one used in the first Airbots and Stuntrons ad. Later on, Beast Wars and Beast Wars Metals ads would also make use of the theme song from their American counterpart.
Historically, Takara's advertising strategy has been to cover the entire toyline in some way, shape or form. This has resulted in some commercials where the toys get the bum's rush, staying on screen just long enough to show off both modes. The Beast Era has several egregious examples, in particular one ad that covers Scuba, Tasmania Kid, Big Horn, Apache, Dirge, Thrust, Starscream, BB, Megastorm and all four Autorollers for a grand total of thirteen toys! The whole line philosophy has been maintained as recently as the Car Robots line.
In addition to toy commercials, Takara has also advertised via promotional videos, which occasionally offered as magazine or DVD extras, that tease an upcoming series or give supplemental information. Commercials for music singles and soundtracks for the various series have also aired on TV, possibly as early as Beast Wars. And of course there's the commercials for Beast Wars sausages. Really. We wouldn't lie to you.
Generation 1
Fight! Super Robot Lifeform Transformers
- Toyline [1]
- Toy segment: A presumably crystal castle of unknown location and origin, holding Convoy trapped within, dissolves into thin air. Somewhere else, the Cybertron forces spread apart to reveal a rising and not-dissolved Convoy. The Destron forces do the same for Megatron. Warp and Meister fire shots which collide in a midair explosion.
- Notes: A red Bumble and yellow Cliff are used.
- Convoy & Megatron [2]
- Notes: This is a dubbed version of the American ad with some of the animation removed. The theme song is undubbed.
- Convoy & Megatron [3] - Edited-down version of the previous commercial.
- Secret Emblem [4]
- Notes: Uses clips from the American rubsign ad (with some reordering) mixed with clips from the "Toyline" commercial.
- Dinobots & Buildrons [5]
- Toy segment: The Dinobots and Buildtrons square off on an ice planet in the middle of a solar eclipse.
- Laserwave [6]
- Notes: This commercial is the Shockwave/Laserwave segments of the U.S. "Jetfire & Shockwave" ad dubbed over. Naturally, the Jetfire segments were dropped due to Takara's legal inability to sell the Bandai-owned Jetfire mold in the Japanese market. Includes an end tag for the Devastor giftset.
- Soundwave [7]
- Notes: Same as the U.S. Soundwave ad with the narration and kids dubbed over.
Fight! Super Robot Lifeform Transformers 2010
- Toy segment: Kits for Ultra Magnus, Convoy, and Blitzwing are shown stop-motion transforming. Shots of the Broadcast, Frenzy, Jaguar and Silverbolt kits in one mode fade into shots of their other mode.
- Notes: The Jaguar kit is shown in flipped colors that are accurate to the original toy instead of the final production colors.
- Airbots & Stuntrons [9]
- Toy segment: The Airbots take off from Metroflex and fly over a desert. They all transform to robot mode and then combine into Superion. Firebolt and Air Rider disconnect, rotate diagonally around Superion's torso, and then reconnect as his right arm and left leg, respectively. Meanwhile, the Stuntrons have been driving in the desert below. They too transform to robot mode before combining into Menasor. Dead End and Drag Stripe disconnect and rotate around Menasor's torso to become his left and right arm, respectively.
- Scramble Power!
- Airbots & Stuntrons [10] - Edited down from the previous commercial.
- Airbots & Stuntrons 2 [11]
- Notes: Combines animation and footage from the U.S. Stunticons and Aerialbots commercial with footage from the Airbots and Stuntrons ad, along with a new clip of the Stuntrons designed to be a parallel to the segment where squares flip to reveal the individual Airbots.
- Ultra Magnus & Galvatron [12]
- Toy segment: Ultra Magnus drives through the desert carrying Silverbolt while Galvatron fires on him from an overlooking cliff in cannon mode. Silverbolt takes off from Magnus's trailer, prompting Galvatron to transform to robot mode. Ultra Magnus transforms just in time to receive a REALLY ineffective flying clothesline from Galvatron.
- Notes: This is the same desert in which the previous commercial took place. Whatever celestial body this desert is on, it's in very close proximity to a ringed planet. Galvatron's cannon blasts are marked by explosions occurring near Magnus, accompanied by laser blast sounds from the cartoon. There's also a lighting effect that seems to have an external source, rather than Galvatron's own light-up gimmick. Ultra Magnus's eyes light up red despite the toy not having that ability.
- Ultra Magnus & Galvatron [13] - Edited down from the previous commercial.
- Ultra Magnus & Galvatron 2 [14]
- Notes: Combines the animation from the U.S. Ultra Magnus and Galvatron commercial with toy footage from the first Japanese ad. The scene of Galvatron firing on Magnus has had a visual laser effect added to it.
- Convoy Is Dead! campaign short (コンポイが死んだ!キャンペーン篇) aka 2010 debut promo? [15]
- Several helicopters lift the sparking corpse of Convoy above Manhattan.[1] Down below, a crowd of onlookers chant his name. This leads to a teary-eyed boy yelling "Convoy!"
- Notes: Silhouettes of Rodimus Convoy and other 2010 toys are shown. The end looks like it indicates it will begin airing sometime in November of that year. This 1986 campaign spot was later included on the 1989 The Transformers: The Movie - Apocalypse: Be Eternal, Matrix VHS.
- Convoy is dead! campaign short (コンポイが死んだ!キャンペーン篇) aka 2010 debut promo? [16] - Edited down from the previous commercial.
- Convoy is dead! campaign short (コンポイが死んだ!キャンペーン篇) aka 2010 debut promo? [17] - A slightly different ending which looks like it gives a specific airing date of November 14th of that year
- Rodimus Convoy [18]
- Animation: Rodimus Convoy vs Galvatron from The Transformers: The Movie.
- Toy segment: Rodimus Convoy drives through a canyon before transforming to face off with Galvatron in front of Cher.
- Notes: The animation in this commercial is quite likely the first time ever that any part of the movie had been publicly shown in Japan.
- Rodimus Convoy[19] - Edited down from the previous commercial.
- Animatrons [20]
- Animation: Reused from the U.S. Predacons commercial.
- Toy segment: A ginormous Galvatron looms over the Destron forces. He then fires at the Cybertron emblem from the scene transition, destroying it. The Animatrons transform from their animal modes to their robot modes and then combine into Predaking.
- Animatrons [21] - Edited down from the previous commercial.
- Metroflex [22]
- Toy segment: The Protectobots are shown departing from Metroflex's desert location. Elsewhere in the desert, the Combatrons are roaming around. Both teams combine and display their Scramble Power before meeting up with Superion and Menasor. Metroflex transforms to his mobile battle station mode and then robot mode. His shadow is seen looming over the combiners before he rises in full view behind Slammer, Scamper and Six-Gun.
- Metroflex [23] - Edited down from the previous commercial.
- Metroflex, Airbots & Stuntrons [24]
- Animation: Reused from the American Aerialbots and Stunticons ad and the Metroplex/Combaticons ad.
- Toy segment: Scenes of Metroflex transforming and rising up, reused from the previous ad.
- Metroflex & Dinosaurer [25]
- Animation: Reused from the American Protectobots/Trypticon ad and the Metroplex/Combaticons ad.
- Toy segment: Metroflex transforming and rising, reused from the Metroflex ad, and a montage of Dinosaurer's various modes, reused from the American ad.
- Notes: Both versions of this ad finish with an end tag for a Transformers board game.
- Metroflex & Dinosaurer [26] - Edited down from the previous commercial.
- Watches [27]
- Animation: Reused from the U.S. ads for Ultra Magnus & Galvatron and Aerialbots & Stunticons.
- Toy segment: An Ultra Magnus watch appears on the wrist of an unknown human individual. The human subsequently flips the watch into its robot mode. Watches for Galvatron and then Superion have their transformations demonstrated.
- Scramble City line [28]
- Toy segment: Metroflex rises up from somewhere to join Slammer, Scamper and Six-Gun. Cut to a shot where we pan up to see Dinosaurer sitting in city mode on a plateau. After cuts to shots of Dinosaurer's dinosaur and mobile battle station modes, we see Ultra Magnus's eyes glowing red. Galvatron transforms and performs a weak flying clothesline. Superion and Menasor face off, then Bruticus and Guardian demonstrate their Scramble Power. Menasor and Bruticus go to meet up somewhere before returning to take on Superion and Guardian. The Cybertron forces stand in a row to face off against the Destrons, who are also standing in a line, as Condor and Buzzsaw swoop overhead. The whole scene is rather surreal, as the toys stand there statically while explosions go off all around them.
- Notes: An instrumental version of "Transformer" plays in the background.
- Notes: Combines animation from the U.S. Ultra Magnus toy commercial with actual game footage.
- Cybertron Triple Changers and Octane [30]
- Animation: Sandstorm and Broadside transforming, reused from the American ad; excerpt of Springer transforming from robot to helicopter taken from The Transformers: The Movie.
- Toy segment: Springer flies, then drives over rocky terrain before transforming. Broadside and Sandstorm transform via split-screen slide show, then join up with Springer. Octane flies, then drives through a different rocky terrain and then transforms. All four cycle through their modes on yet another type of rocky terrain.
- Cybertron Triple Changers and Octane [31] - Edited down from the previous commercial.
The Headmasters
- Targetmasters [32]
- Toy segment: Artfire, Stepper, Crosshairs, Sureshot and Blanker drive through a desert while Misfire flies overhead. The Cybertrons' Targetmaster partners jump off a nearby cliff to join the Targetmaster Cybertrons, who have transformed.
- Notes: Includes an end tag promoting Pretender Lander.
- Targetmasters [33] - Edited down from previous commercial.

- Headmasters [37] - Edited down from previous commercial.
- Fortress Maximus and Mega Zarak [38]
- Toy segment: Mega Zarak walks through the desert in scorpion mode, grabbing Fortress Maximus as the latter flies overhead. Fortress Maximus gets himself loose and transforms into robot mode. Zarak remains in scorpion mode and fires ineffectively while Fortress Maximus slashes him with the Master Sword.
- Fortress Maximus and Mega Zarak [39] - Edited down from previous commercial.

- Pretenders [43] - Edited down from previous commercial.
- Super Ginrai [44]
- Toy segment: Ginrai drives down a street, only to have Buster and Hydra pop up and take pot shots at him. Ginrai responds by transforming into Super Ginrai and firing at Buster and Hydra as they fly by.
- Notes: This commercial takes place in the same area as the previous one. Ginrai apparently has difficulty with moving targets, as he misses at least twice before possibly landing some shots.
- Super Ginrai [45] - Edited down from previous commercial.
- God Ginrai [46]

Transformers: Lost Age
- Trailer [209]
- Uploaded April 24 2014. Similar to the first Japanese trailer for Transformers, this one begins with an introduction by a famous American associated with the film. Instead of Steven Spielberg and Michael Bay, this time it's new lead actor Mark Wahlberg. Unlike his predecessors, he speaks only English. This is accompanied by Japanese subtitles. The remainder of the trailer is a heavily edited down version of the US trailer with most of the footage unique to that trailer (i.e. the footage not found in the first two US commercials) removed. Notable exceptions are the brief scene with Tessa's "Dad, you can't keep spending money on junk" voice over, the pan past Lucas Flannery to Optimus Prime and the scene of a Stinger transforming in front of Bumblebee.
- Overdubbed Trailer [210]
- Uploaded July 3, 2014. A 48 second mini-trailer using dubbed footage instead of subtitled footage like the first trailer. It is soundtracked with the Imagine Dragons song "Battle Cry".
- Destroyer [211]
- Uploaded July 1, 2014 with the ESPN "Future of Soccer" ad. Uploaded July 2 on it's own. A slightly modified version of the English language Destroyer ad with Tessa's "Help me!" line removed and the clip of her being caught by Bumblebee extended. This ad has English audio with subtitles.
- Destroyer [212] (15 sec) - An edited down version of the previous ad.
- Desperate Situation [213]
- Uploaded July 2, 2014. English audio for the movie clips with Japanese subtitles. "This is not war." "Help me!" "Tessa!" "It's human extinction." "Bumblebee!" "You gotta have faith Prime, maybe not in who we are" "OH MY GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOD!" "but who we can be."
- Desperate Situation [214] (15 sec) - An edited down version of the previous ad with Japanese audio for the movie clips.
- Fate [215]
- Uploaded July 2, 2014. English audio for the movie clips with Japanese subtitles. "Humans are hunting us, but a greater threat is coming." "He needs our help." "Why are you willing to help me?" - Movie Advanced Series dio story [222]
- Uploaded May 20, 2014. Earth is shown floating in space. This is followed by Optimus Prime, Classic Bumblebee and Crosshairs transforming and rolling out from some rocky looking area. The Dinobots, Grimlock, Slug and Scorn stomp around a similar looking area until meeting up with the Autobots. The Autobots transform to robot mode, which seems to enrage the Dinobots. The Dinobots charge the Autobots and knock them down. Prime manages to get back up, prompting the Dinobots to transform to robot mode themselves. Prime and Grimlock charge and collide in battle, leading to Optimus delivering a final blow. The blow prompts Grimlock to decide to shake hands with Optimus and be friends. The remainder of the trailer highlights the first seventeen Movie Advanced Series figures, grouped by movie of origin.
- Lost Age Series dio story [223]
- Uploaded July 9, 2014. Advertises mostly the One Step Changers, but also Battle Command Optimus Prime, Big Grimlock, Battle Attack Scorn and Battle Attack Strafe. Lockdown is driving down a desert-ish road when he decides to stop and transform. This prompts the Autobots (except for Prime), who were driving the other direction the road, to stop and transform as well. Drift, Crosshairs, Grimlock, and Bumblebee all stand on top of Prime's trailer, which he has deployed into a battle station. The Autobots unleash a massive barrage of gunfire at Lockdown without making a dent. Lockdown returns the favor by blasting away the trailer and all the Autobots save Prime, who's still sitting there in truck mode. Optimus finally transforms and destroys Lockdown with a slash of his sword. The trailer ends with each of first eleven Lost Age Series toys being highlighted.
- Lost Age Series [224]
- Uploaded July 24, 2014. Battle Command Optimus Prime is driving along a desert road in the American southwest. Bumblebee and Drift deploy from Prime's trailer so that he can transform to robot mode for no real reason whatsoever. Bumblebee and Drift then follow suit and transform to their robot modes. This is followed by Hound, who was apparently there the whole time unseen, transforming. Lockdown then transforms on a black grid floating somewhere up in the clouds. Bumblebee then jumps on Prime's back before being replaced by his trailer, which is now in backpack mode. The end shot shows Optimus Prime and all the One Step Changers.
