Blood spatter on the ceiling?

All kinds of crazy can happen when dad helps out in the kitchen. Take this afternoon for example, we were having DIY salad rolls for lunch so dad was chopping up some salad for the rolls. A simple task really but one that ended up with blood all over the place; from the kitchen bench, over the shopping, on the table, the microwave and of course the floor too.

Further inspection also saw blood splatter on the pantry and the stove, even the ceiling.

Seriously, there was so much blood that you would think that there had been a murder in the kitchen. Luckily it was just a tiny cut on the tip of dad's finger!

20/20 vision

Another Saturday morning on the ice followed by a trip to Costco. Just a typical Saturday for us I hear you say? Well almost but not quite, we didn't buy ANYTHING at Costco today. Confused? We were in a bit of a hurry so we ran in, met Emmy the optometrist, had our eyes tested, found out that my vision is awesome and ran back out again in time to have lunch with friends.
How's that for a productive morning?

Burning up

Everyone thought that mum was getting better and we were all excited, that was until this weekend when she started to get all fever-y again. We sent her to bed this afternoon with a dose of panadol, to to see if it would make her feel any better. It didn't work. Instead of the fever going down it went up and by the time it hit 40c it was time for her to go to into the hospital (again).

When she gave me a kiss goodbye she almost burnt a hole in my cheek she was so hot!

Luckily, after another 2 litres of fluids and some more medicine, her fever dropped back to something close to normal and she was allowed to go back he again.

Hopefully this is it for the sickness and m can be healthy again.

Lucky Me

It isn't every day that I realise that I am so lucky but on a day like today - International Day of the Girl, it is important to realise that I am really really lucky.  I am lucky to live in Australia, in a country that values education and equality.  Did you know that if I was born in many other countries in the world, it is unlikely that I would be going to school.  Around the world, 1 in 3 girls don't get the chance to go to school.  In some countries, I might even be married already, to someone that I didn't even know.  I might be living in poverty and be exposed to violence.

Today I will remember just how lucky I am to be able to read, to be able to learn, to be able to go to school and live in safety.

Sundays in my City #20 - Unplanned Adventures

Today is Father's Day in Australia so logic would say this would be a post of how we spent the day as a family, enjoying each others company and relaxing.  Unfortunately that isn't how the day panned out.  Instead I spent all day at work and the rest of the family had an 'interesting' day that included a trip to the dental hospital.

Yesterday AJ had an ulcer in his mouth hat was uncomfortable but he woke today and was in a considerable amount of pain and he couldn't close his mouth properly.  It turns out that he had an infection in his tooth so he had it extracted.

Extraction in Action

Extracted!
I have to say that I am glad that I wasn't there.  I am so proud of him for not freaking out, and despite the considerable pain, he isn't afraid of the dentist!

Yes, a gruesome way to spend a Sunday, be thankful that I didn't post the video!

Winter Woes

Remember on the weekend we had no new photos to share of our week because we stayed inside most of the weekend because I was feeling pretty ordinary and had a really bad cold?  Well I felt OK on Monday and I went to school but by the end of the day I was feeling pretty ordinary again so we all decided that since mum didn't have to go in to work on Tuesday that I should spend the day in bed resting so that I could recover.

On Tuesday morning, AJ headed off to school and mum and I snuggled on the couch watching Glee.  Now normally when we have a sick day, we have to spend the morning in bed either sleeping or reading.  I really expected mum to remember that sick days mean sleep and not endless hours watching tv shows but mum was sound asleep on the couch!

Other than when the guy came to fix the tv antenna, Mum spent the entire day sleeping, either on the couch or in AJ's room.  I figured that she must really be sick when she didn't even answer her phone when it rang!  I didn't want to bother her so I made my own lunch and even told AJ not to annoy mum when he got home from school.

When dad finally got home from work, he decided that mum was too sick to stay at home and before we knew it, we were heading over to our neighbours house for some dinner and dad was taking mum in to the hospital for some tests.  It turns out that they thought mum might have had malaria but luckily it was only dehydration from the flu.  They gave her some IV fluids, some drugs and then let her go home for some more sleep.

So today I am back at school feeling almost normal again and mum is at home, still in bed sleeping and hopefully feeling a little better.

Sundays in my City #9 - Not going to plan

A long weekend in Australia is the perfect opportunity to get out and about with the kids and have some fun.  For the first time in what felt like forever we had a weekend with no sport and no training obligations at all.  The only plans we had were to look after my gorgeous little God son on the Saturday night.  The theory was that we would have a quiet day on Saturday, pottering around the house but then on Sunday we would go exploring.  The weather was predicted to be fairly decent, well at least not raining or freezing, so we were thinking that we would even find somewhere to stay overnight and really explore somewhere new.  That was the plan but like all good plans, they seem to get turned upside down.

The reality was that we did spend Saturday pottering about and then the rest of the day was spent playing with a gorgeous little bub.  I didn't expect to get much sleep Saturday night, what with having a 7 month old who doesn't sleep through the night the house, but surely that wouldn't be too bad.  When the beautiful bub did eventually fall asleep for the night, he only woke once.  Unfortunately though, I had the lack of sleep trifecta - a waking baby, followed by insomnia and then a sick child.  I managed to only doze for a an hour or so with my night being spent re-settling the baby, cleaning up vomit and calming a sick child.

Needless to say, with the extreme of lack of sleep, I was in no state to do any exploring on Sunday.  In fact AJ and I barely moved from the couch all day long.  Instead of photos of awesome adventures, I have photos of a beautiful bub and my beautiful girl.

I was so grateful that my beautiful girl loves him almost as much as I do and was happy to help out.

Grrr, Argh!

Way back in the last school holidays, at Easter, there was a big storm and during that snapped our television antenna and now we can't watch tv.  It really isn't a huge problem because we have about a billion dvds that we can watch instead, and then there is hours of fun watching random stuff on You Tube.

[source]
In the lack of traditional tv watching, we have found some awesome stuff to watch.  Our first new family favourite is Punky Brewster.  Punky is really cool.  Milla love it because she wears really cool clothes, has a dog and great friends.  I love it because it is fun to watch.

[source]
Now that we have watched all of the Punky Brewster episodes available, we needed to watch something new.  After heaps of begging, mum and dad broke all of their own rules and gave in.  They let us watch Buffy the Vampire Slayer.  It was really cool but kind of scary, so we didn't watch too much of it.

Well that was until today...

Last night I was sick and woke up during the night to vomit, over and over again.  It was pretty ugly and exhausting too.  I was so exhausted that I didn't leave the couch all day.  Mum who stayed up all night with me was pretty tired too, so we snuggled on the couch and watched Buffy all day long!

As much as snuggling on the couch snuggling is the best way to spend the day when you aren't feeling so well, I hope that I am feeling better so that I can enjoy a holiday outside tomorrow.

Chickens Will Fix It

Mum came to school to visit Milla in her class and then she surprised me by coming to visit me in my class just before I had snack and went out to play and mum went back to work. Mum didn't even get a chance to get back to work before her phone rang. Can you guess who it was? It was school calling to say that I was injured, again.

Before you knew it I was at the doctors and then having an xray of my elbow. Now or course it was my dodgy elbow and of course it was injured. I now have a Subluxation of my Radial Head. Now what that really means is that one of the bones in my forearm (the same bone that dad broke in his arm) doesn't quite line up with the bone that I just had the screws taken out of. Essentially I have a minor dislocation and it really hurts.
To cheer me up mum gave in and let me have some KFC for lunch in between appointments. Then to fill in time before the end of the school day I went to visit Ellen in her class and to see Tiger. I was even feeling so much better that I was allowed to go out and chase the chickens!
Hopefully my arm won't take too long to heal, I am off to see my orthopedic surgeon next week and in the mean time it is back to life in a sling and resting.

Hayfever

My eyes are itchy, red and watery, I keep sneezing and I feel pretty terrible, I look pretty terrible too.
To cheer myself up I did some face painting.
Yep I feel much better now,

Over Share

By now everyone knows that dad is in hospital, well this is the reason why - OUCH!
Luckily dad didn't want us to miss out on what he was doing so he had lots of people take photos of him and his injury.

Waiting for the ambulance with a bag of dim sims and peas to ice the injury!

Being wheeled into emergency from the ambulance.

Waiting for xrays.

I don't know why no one took photos of dad's elbow being popped back in to place?
Thanks for sharing dad, I hope your arm gets better soon and you come back home.

Copy Cat

When I woke up this morning, dad wasn't home. Sometimes he goes in to work early but not today, today he was in hospital!

Last night, right about the time that I was drifting off to sleep dad was playing basketball. Just before the game finished, he jumped up into the air and got pushed. He landed awkwardly and crunch, copy cat - a dislocated elbow and broken arm!

Can you believe that dad had to find something so painful to do to copy me? Surely he could have found an easier way to be like me.

Another Big Day

Today was another big day - it was the day that I had the bandages and stitches removed from my arm. Luckily it was a pretty quick visit. The bandage was unwrapped, the padding was removed and the waterproof seal was peeled off. The ends of the stitches were peeled off and I was almost ready to go.

Now apparently there are still holes where the screws have been removed so I have to take it easy for a couple of weeks just to make sure that I don't break my arm again just yet. Other than that, my arm is as good as new it just has a beaut new scar and few extra lumps and bumps to freak people out with. I don't even need to go back to visit the orthopedic surgeon until next year!

Do you want to know what was best about my latest visit to the hospital? It was dad's turn to take me there and it is much easier to convince dad to get junk food than it is to convince mum!
mmm...KFC...

Soggy Bandages
I had a big bath tonight and forgot that I am supposed to be resting AND keeping my bandages dry!
Luckily I am going back to the orthopedic surgeon this week to have my bandages and stitches removed, I don't think I will be able to remember to keep my arm dry much longer. Mum had to take my bandages off to dry them out so they could dry out ready for school in the morning

Stinky

Look how mum had to spend the night last night.
Mum, and dad too, spent most of the night cleaning up both of us kids each time we vomited and that was quite a few times. It wasn't much fun for anyone. AJ had more throw-ups than I did - he said that he had a new record of 31 throw-ups. Now I know it wasn't 31 throw-ups but I am sure that it was at least 13!

I felt much better this morning but AJ is still sleeping and a bit feverish. I hope he is feeling better soon so that we can go on holiday adventures.

Unscrewed!

We all woke up extra early this morning so that I could have something to eat. I had to make sure that I had finished breakfast by 6.30am (before I would normally be out of bed!) so that my stomach would be empty when they operated on my elbow in the afternoon.

Poppy drove us home so that we could be at the Children's Hospital at noon, right at the time my stomach was really grumbling and making me want to eat. Milla was really kind and she didn't eat any food all morning either. Mum and dad said that they wouldn't eat all morning too, but I think they had Hungry Jacks for breakfast before we got home!
I had to prove that I was strong before the surgery!

I met with my orthopedic surgeon and he drew on my arm to make sure he operated on the right one - my left arm!
Finally it was time for surgery, I wasn't very excited about it.
The anesthetists, Fiona and Jonathan were great, they gave me the medicines to make me go to sleep so that I didn't feel the surgery. I didn't even feel when Fiona put the drip into my hand.

Finally, after an hour in surgery, the screws and washers were removed and my arm was sewn back together and bandaged up tight. Eventually mum was called in to the recovery area but I didn't want to wake up. I was getting annoyed that I was getting woken up especially when I was so tired.

By about 5 o'clock I was starting to get hungry so I ate icypoles, fruit salad, yoghurt and icecream, so not everything about being in hospital was horrible! Now all I have to do is try and rest and stay quiet - I don't think that is very likely, it is the holidays after all!

Hopefully this is the last time I will have surgery.

Time for Sleep

Well our holiday with nan and pop has been great fun. We have been out for dinner at the club, played wii and other games, been exploring the neighbourhood and making new friends. It has been a great holiday but not a very long one. We have to go to bed early tonight as we are heading back to Melbourne really early in the morning, not because we want to go but because it is time for me to get the screws taken from my elbow.

Good night,

A Sick Day

Well I was a little bit sick last night and apparently that meant mum and dad didn't get much sleep.  When I got up this morning I was feeling better and I was all set to go to school, but mum and dad said that I didn't have to - everyone else was too tired.  Even Milli got to stay home and rest. Dad did go in to work, but he was a little late.  The rest of us stayed home, warm and snugly in our jammies!

During the afternoon we all had a little more energy so we played shop.  Now normally I don't play shop with MIlla, mainly because she always wants to have a shop full of jewels or other girly stuff.  Today I didn't mind playing shop because we played massage shop.  We took in turns being the massager and the customer.
It was pretty easy to trick Milla into being the massager for the longest times just by telling her how good she was at massage.  It was such a great game even mum played.  She was a customer at the shop and Milla and I were the massage people.  For some reason mum wanted us to play that game all afternoon!

Not long after we finished playing shop, it was time for school to finish.  The best thing about that is that friends could come over to visit because we weren't really sick.  It is great having a day off school when you are able to enjoy it!

41 Days, Not That I Was Counting!

Well after 41 really long days, it was finally time to have my plaster removed.  Mum picked me up from school extra early - before lunch, so that we could go into the Children's Hospital for my appointments.  My first appointment was to have my plaster removed, then I had to have xrays taken and then finally I had to see my surgeon to see if my screws were in the right place.

Could you believe it, my mum knew the nurse that was working in the Orthopedic Clinic and she cut my plaster off for me.  She was really nice and used the giant scissors instead of the noisy saw.  When the plaster was off, my arm was really stinky and covered in tape and dried blood.  The nurse tried to clean some of it off for me, but it was way too dirty.  Instead she cleaned up my cast so I could take it home and use for show and tell.  She also made me a sling and then we headed downstairs for the xrays.
After the xrays were taken we went back upstairs to see the surgeon.  I don't really remember him from when I had my surgery, but he is really nice.  He showed me the pictures of my arm and told me that I am the boss of my arm, that I don't have to move it unless I want to move it. Just because I am the boss of my arm doesn't mean that I am the boss of everything about me.  I have to come back to visit my surgeon in a month to make sure my bones are growing properly.  I also have to start having baths all the time again :(

Mum made me have a big bath to try to get 7 weeks of dirt off my hand as well as all of the gunk off from under my plaster.  It took half an hour of soaking but finally the sticky plaster came off my scar and I could see the row of stitches!  Mum took out a few of the stitches, but a few more are stuck and I might have to get Aunty Sharn to get them out for me one day.

Now that I don't have plaster on my arm, it feels really weird.  I am a bit worried that I will hurt it so I think I will leave my sling on for a little while.  Other than that, it is good to be almost normal again and to be able to wear jumpers with 2 sleeves in them!

I have spent all week staying inside, resting and recovering.  The sun is shining and I am feeling heaps better.  My spots aren't so spotty and I am allowed to play with my friends again, hooray!
