Social support is a factor which can play a role as a buffer against difficult situations and stress. The aim of the study was to evaluate the relation between the subjective evaluation of different dimensions of social support and the constructive or destructive adaptive style of coping in cancer patients in palliative or radical treatment. Material and methods: The study involved 89 cancer patients who were treated palliatively (60 patients) or radically (29 patients). Two self-report tools were used: the Mental Adjustment to Cancer Mini-MAC and Berlin Social Support Scales (BSSS). Results and conclusions: The examined groups of patients differ in terms of the relations between particular dimensions of social support and their influence on the use of constructive or destructive coping strategies in adjustment to cancer. For the adjustment to cancer, it is not particularly essential how the p...

The melanoma of a small thickness is connected with 95 % percent of survival, while the one with deep dripping changes often decreases below 10 %. The self-examination of the skin increases the probability of diagnosis at an early stage, improving the chance of a full recovery. The actions of detecting melanoma at early stage should be done by educating patients, promoting self-examination of the skin with the use of technological progress and the conducting of general screening programs. This paper presents the role of self-examination in the early detection of melanoma based on publications from medical datebase PubMed in the period 1987 to 2013.

Little data are available concerning the SSE frequency and knowledge about the symptoms of melanoma in non-patient populations. The aim of our study was to assess the performance of skin self-examination, recognition of potential melanoma symptoms as well as behavior related to sun exposure among web users in Poland. A cross-sectional study was conducted among readers of a scientific portal. Invited respondents were asked to complete an online questionnaire. Finally, statistical analysis was conducted on 4,919 surveys towards potential clinical signs of melanoma and SSE performance. Approximately 60% of respondents had ever performed SSE in their life. Only 18.4 % declared performance on a regular, monthly, basis. Factors promoting this activity were established to be bigger place of residence, higher education and sensitive skin phototype, higher level of knowledge concerning mela...

The aim of the study was to describe a rare case of the cutaneous melanoma metastazing to the stomach. . Bearing in mind the rarity of such cases, we present our experiences based on the history of 42-year-old woman, who underwent surgical excision of skin tumour located on the trunk. Histopathological examination of the skin tumor led to the diagnosis of melanoma (Clark IV, Breslow 5mm) with ulceration and a number of mitoses 40/10 HPF. PET-CT demonstrated multiple organ dissemination. Patient was admitted to the hospital due to severe, symptomatic anaemia. RBC and FFP transfusions were necessary. Gastroscopy revealed multiple gastric and duodenal ulcers and histopathology confirmed metastatic melanoma. Attempts to achieve endoscopic hemostasis were ineffective due to the extent of lesions. In the presence of any alarming GIT symptoms or unclear anaemia, any physician treating p...

Those who personally knew a mentally disordered person were more inclined to share a flat or start a relationship with such an individual, than the rest of the interviewed (51% vs. 37% for flat sharing and 38% vs. 26% for starting a relationship, p < 0.001).Conclusions According to the acquired data, many young Poles believe that the mentally disordered are inclined to break the law and behave aggressively. These opinions seem to be related amongst others to age and gender, and they result in unwillingness to have relations with the mentally disordered.

It was estimated that in the United States one person died from this cause every hour. The major risk factor of this disease is exposure to ultraviolet radiation, especially associated with the occurrence of sunburns. Patients diagnosed with distant metastases have median survival of 6-9 months. The aim of this paper was to identify the causes of delayed diagnosis of melanoma as diagnosis at an early stage seems to be the key to improve the survival rates. For this purpose, a search of medical databases such as PubMed, Google Scholar and Cancer Registers was conducted and an analysis of the literature from the years 1979-2013 was conducted.
