I finished another wonky pillow. We've been using a lot of small pillows to support our backs. John claimed this one immediately.... his old one is too flat.

We're back in Portland again
The heat wave broke and the weather is delightfully the way it should be. Here is what the weather blog guy has to say about the historic heat wave.
Historic Heat Wave
It's nice not to be restricted to a few hours a day of decent weather. And it's been really fun sitting on the porch watching the hummingbirds who are crazy for our bee balm. There are usually three hummers chasing each other around.
Neither of us got a lot done during the heat wave but here is a wonky pillow I managed to make.
Here it is before it was sewn.

More wonky blocks
I am not quilting much right now. The garden and being outdoors has been more the focus. I did get a couple more wonky blocks made.
I have a third one ready to sew.

It's finished with a wonky bias edge. It's still pinned on top of another quilt
Backing and sewing on the binding. Look, Wanda, my first ever Kaffe Faseett print.

Wonky blocks sewn together
I sewed my nine wonky blocks together. It's quilted and backed. I need to choose a binding, make the binding, cut the edge and sew on the binding.
It looks so much better sewn together. Here it is before.

Six wonky blocks
I am still making wonky log cabin blocks. Here is my most recent one before it was sewn.
They are fun to make. I've adjusted my technique. I start with 2.5 inch strips. I use my rotary cutter to cut a wavering lengthwise line. I place the strips on my batting so the wave undulations are where I like them and then trim any extra from the ends. I pin them in place and zig zag the raw edges. Then I do some simple hand quilting. And I may add some beads or other decorative elements. It depends on how I decide to use the blocks.
I think that individual blocks would make great cushion fronts. I am going to make more before I decide what to do with them.
The later ones (upper right and lower left) are more curvaceous.

Wonky log cabin
I ran across this wonky log cabin idea from Karen Eckmeier. I think I first saw it here. but she has her own site and even books on the technique. It's not new but it is new to me. What fun!
I constructed mine a little differently. I cut out a piece of batting about the block size I wanted and built my bock on top of it. I used a zag zag stitch (with variegated thread) to stitch the blocks together and quilt them through the batting at the same time. Then I did some simple hand quilting with perle cotton following the edges. It's amazing how that little bit of hand quilting changes the look of the blocks. Most important to me is that I enjoyed the process as well as the result.
My first and second blocks with zig zag stitching
Some hand quilting added to the red one.
Here is the purple and green one before hand quilting
And after hand quilting
