Sports cognition encompasses the primary affective-motivational aspect related to primordial fight-or
flight responses, which are essentially the precursors for both the BAS (behavioural activation system -
the reward system) and BIS (behavioural inhibition system- the punishment or fear-eliciting system). In
Asian and especially South-Asian perspective, impulsivity and aggressive out-bursts are by and large
considered as conduct disorders, thus more acceptable docile tendency in children and pre-adolescent
lead them to a cognitive-motivational make-up of BIS orientation. With such a background the present
study was carried out to identify the extent of cognitive-affective competence of the skilled competitive
players in enhancing bilateral motor coordination required for high sport performance. Eighty-one high
performing female ball game players matched with their performance-specific motor coordination ability,
were categorised into three differential groups based on their psychobiological competence, viz; Group
A- consisted of twenty-seven players diagnosed with moderate level of sympathovagal balance; Group
B (N = 27) – consisted of twenty-seven players diagnosed with discordant sympathovagal balance,
while Group C (n = 27) were identified as having high sympathovagal balance. Thereafter, players of
Group B & C were introduced to training of skin-conductance biofeedback tailored for musculoskeletal
enhancement (20 min.s/ day; three days/ week for twelve weeks). Mid-term analyses of motor
coordination as well as the post-intervention analyses (carried out after the twelfth week) revealed that
players having higher sympathovagal balance had higher efficiency in modulation of muscle tension as
well as in perceptual –motor adaptation, which have prompted them to have enhanced bilateral and
visual-motor coordination compared to their counterparts.

Fifty-two high performing soccer players of South-East Asian contingent were selected by three
expert soccer instructors on the basis of their consistent high performance and on the basis of their
performance on psychomotor and psychobiological parameters. All of these players were subjected to
pre-intervention analyses of Sc orienting reflex indices (phasic components of electrodermal activity) as
well as sympathovagal activity based on HRV indices which were assessed simultaneously while the
players were engaged in psychomotor reaction ability performances. Structural equations were done to
identify the path regression related to performance excellence, which were suggestive of incoherence
between the predictors. Short-term intensive self-regulation as well as action-regulation training
modules was developed to foster ideomotor orientation in the players, which however was found
effective in modification of the intrinsic psychobiological mechanism leading towards excellence in
performance in the high-performer soccer players. Thus they were randomly categorised into four
groups, comprising of one no-intervention control group (N = 13); experimental group I (N = 13) who
received action-regulation training; experimental group II (N = 13), who received training of
electromyography (EMG) biofeedback, and experimental group III (N = 13), who received combined
training of action - regulation and electromyography (EMG) biofeedback (for 15 min.s/day, for 3 days
per week, for 12 weeks). Repeated measure of ANOVA and multiple linear and polynomial regression
analyses along with the predictive structural analyses were done to identify relationships between the
psychobiological processes, in relation to the cognitive-affective and affective-motivational aspects of
sports behaviour, revealed by the projective analyses of emotionality. These models were aptly able to
explain the efficacy of the action-regulation intervention techniques, in inducing the cognitive flexibility
and emotional resilience required for performance excellence in elite-level soccer players.

The present study was undertaken with an objective to study the effect of psychotherapeutic training on improvement of coordination in performance of soccer skills. Eighty one young male soccer players of the city of Kota Bharu in Kelantan province of Malaysia, in the age range of 18.6 to 20.9 years, volunteered as participants. They were assessed with transient anxiety; simple and complexreaction ability; motor coordination; psychobiological measures of tonic and phasic skin conductance activity; assessment of muscle potentiality and soccer agility and soccer juggling skill as measure of preintervention analyses. Thereafter, they were randomly and equally categorized into three groups; viz. Group A (N = 27), i.e. control group who didn't receive any intervention; Group B(N = 27)

Purpose of this study was to identify and compare the efficacy of skin conductance (Sc) and electromyography (EMG) biofeedback intervention techniques in regulation of sudomotor nerve activity (SNA) and maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) evident in high-performing soccer players having dismal performance. All of the players were assessed with autonomic measures of emotionality (SNA and Sc amplitude); electromyography evaluation of MVC. Fifty-four National-selection group soccer players in Malaysia were randomly categorized into three groups (Gr. A, N = 18, no-intervention control group); Gr. B (who received EMG biofeedback training) and Gr. C (received Sc biofeedback intervention).
