Newest in the renowned series from the Library and Information Technology Association (a division of the American Library Association), this cu ing-edge guide provides practical advice, detailed examples, implementation ideas, and helpful forecasts for the future roles of four major interactive technologies. Librarians will find helpful information on: using Real Simple Syndication (RSS) for providing data based on disciplinary interests and across vendor platforms; developing Wikis as a replacement for static HTML pages to provide greater currency in subject guides without the need for librarians to develop Web-authoring skills; implementing blog feeds to meet real needs such as library instruction for distance-education students; and employing podcasting as an alternate method for distributing digital media. Use this LITA Guide to incorporate the newest technologies into programs and create a high-technology profile with your library s customers.

This issue of "The Balance Point" presents several librarians with strong interests in reference and instruction, who tell the story of adapting a federated search system for their libraries and reflect upon how federated searching can change the way students do research and on the implications federated searching has on information literacy skills and the quality of results found.

Providing access to information provided by the library has been attempted through various means throughout the years but no method has been as popular or pervasive as the uses of library gateways and portals. Development of gateways and portals in libraries has been affected by many factors many of which have been outside the direct control of libraries or librarians. Both the history of library practice in this area and these external factors have had a substantial impact on the state of library portal and gateway development today

Design/methodology/approach – Literature‐ and practice‐based analysis of seven key methods for making decisions within a group. Findings – One of the many issues that digital library project managers face is getting people to make decisions. Decision making can usually be accomplished in an effective manner if the project manager uses a sound methodology for having the group come to a decision. Using a consistent approach to decision making allows the team to deal with the complexity of issues by providing a structure for organizing issues. Research limitations/implications – The individual context of an organization will require adapting some of the methods to local practice. Practical implications – Provides a methodology for decision making within a group/team‐based context. Originality/value – Provides caveats and guidelines for team leaders/project managers who must facilitate decision‐making processes.

Emerging trends indicate that expectations of patrons have changed and are increasingly tied to the collection and maintenance of materials that are not directly owned by the library. As repositories continue to evolve, libraries will need to be more proactive in contextualizing their digital repositories to the local environment. Unlike the current “one size fits all” model of digital repositories, contextualization emphasized thoughtful planning and implementation of services that are relevant to the local environment.Originality/value – This paper describes an emerging trend in digital repository services.

Produces better business outcomes through more informed decision making. Has a positive influence on creative thinking and innovation. Creates opportunities for improved project monitoring and control. Can aide in addressing concerns with respect to overhead and time. Contributes to project success. Project risk management is an integral component of project management and is found at the heart of WSDOT's project management processes. Risk management is also a key component of project cost estimating and scheduling, as noted in National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) Report 574. Exhibit 1-1 portrays balanced project risk management through project development and balanced risk management. With effective risk management as an integral and required part of project management, we can not only predict possible future outcomes, we can take action to shift the odds in favor of project success. Design/methodology/approach-Using theory and example, the paper relates the use of paired comparison analysis to the successful prioritization of competing demands in digital library projects. Findings-Paired comparison analysis is useful to project managers and project teams alike as a means for prioritizing the issues, factors, and courses of action within a single project or among multiple projects, especially when these items are difficult to evaluate using an objective scheme. Originality/value-The paper fills a gap in the digital library project management literature by providing an overview of a useful tool to prioritize the issues, factors, and courses of action within a project or among several projects, particularly when these items cannot be compared based on similar measures.

Design/methodology/approach Drawing upon a number of disciplines, including marketing, consumer decision theory and evidence-based practice, the utility of big data and analytics is applied to a practical application in libraries and information organizations: the evaluation of social media presence. Findings There are a multitude of techniques (social network analysis, statistical analysis, geographic coding) that can be used as part of a project to evaluate the effectiveness of social media presence. Each technique provides its own “lens” on the data. By combining techniques, powerful analyses can be performed. Originality/value Practical applications of big data and analytics to problems in libraries and information orga...

As such, it provides a snapshot of the thinking at that time about these topics and features glimpses of opportunities for libraries in the twenty-first century. Keynote speaker Kaufman provides an overview of where libraries have been and where they are heading. Her advice to those working in this transformed future is to make choices that will help research libraries integrate themselves into the fabric of university life and research. Dillon asserts, ''the future of libraries is likely to be where it has always been, in providing a particular community with value-added information services that they cannot get elsewhere'' (p. 39) by focusing on and promoting what they do and do well. By comparing two digital library projects, Panitch and Michalak emphasize the need for research libraries to focus on performing work of a scholarly nature in this arena. Baker shares information about projects, both successful and not, so that research librarians can continue their long tradition of collaboration to make future changes. She suggests that in general librarians are ahead of the curve compared to their faculty when it comes to seeing the need to change how information and knowledge are handled and disseminated. Cullen warns of the dangers of simply being overwhelmed by the rapid increase of information and challenges readers to take measures that make it useful to others. What new skills and

This paper aims to provide an overview of the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems (ICD) for informaticians and information professionals who may not have worked with the system previously. Design/methodology/approach In this paper, the author reviews the purpose, history, current use and future trends of the ICD classification system. Findings ICD is used globally as a standard vocabulary for medical diagnoses and, in the USA, for medical procedures in hospitals. Understanding the classification system is vital to working with clinical medical data. Originality/value The ICD classification system is not commonly used by information professionals. This paper provides a brief overview that will familiarize the information professional with the standard and its uses related ...

By comparing the results from programs, a baseline understanding of what the overall requirements within these programs has been developed. This may provide benefits for the profession, as this baseline can provide a clearer understanding of the skills and knowledge elements that are present or absent in the current academic programs. In addition to better informing the KM community of what graduates of these programs may know, this information can provide a basis for academic program improvement and, ultimately, better use of KM in professional practice. Design/methodology/approach The basic approach in this study is a comparative analysis of curriculum in master-level programs in English that are focused on KM. In th...

As such, this often circumvents formal project management principles and practices. The decision to do this is determined by organizational factors; however, even in an informal environment, ensuring that adequate disaster recovery and business continuity plans are in place for all mission-critical applications is vital to ensure the long-term survival prospects of an organization in the event of a disaster. Design/methodology/approach By adapting the principles and techniques of traditional disaster recovery and business continuity planning, an informatician can develop plans that integrate the requirements of their projects into a larger, organization-wide plan to recover from incidents and ensure continuity of business operations. Findings The use of disaster recovery planning and business continuity planning can help ensure th...
