In his life-long research activity, VS dealt with population genetics and evolution of several organisms, with special regard to butterflies and organisms adapted to cave life. The laboratory so far headed by Valerio Sbordoni embraced a consistent staff of researchers, postdocs, and PhD students involved in different facets of biodiversity (www.zeb.uniroma2.it). At Tor Vergata University VS has served as Vice-President for cultural activities (1999-2005). V.S. has been one of the founders of the European Society of Evolutionary Biology. He is a member of the “Accademia Nazionale delle Scienze”, the so-called Academy of the XL, and of the “Accademia Nazionale Italiana di Entomologia”.
