With Christmas approaching I've been trying to think of gifts I could make rather than buy. Neither of the examples I've come up with so far is actually for Christmas but I'm thinking they could both be adapted to suit fairly easily...
This card & gift is for the birthday of a good friend of mine. I had the idea a while ago to make some puzzle pieces into earrings and I finally bought a puzzle the other day. Ed & I spent quite a while doing the puzzle after I had the supplementary idea of using the surrounding pieces to make a card to present the earrings on, here's how it turned out:
All I did here was cut a wavy line down one side of a piece of blue card, ink the edges with Distress Ink to match the colours of her swimming costume, and spread it with PVA before sliding the bit of jigsaw on and pressing it flat. Once dry I added the earrings in the gaps using a blob of Blutack. Here's a closeup of one earring:
These earrings were really easy to make. I painted the back and sides with black acrylic paint and then varnished the whole piece with two coats of decoupage medium. I used a stapler to make a tiny hole which I then enlarged with a pin, then added a jump ring to attach to the ear wires. I know not everyone would probably wear such weird jewellery, but I would and I have a feeling my dear friend Liz will, too. :)
The other card/gift I've made is a leaving present for a guy at work. He, like me, reads a book at breaktimes and also just like me I've noticed he uses a train ticket or reciept to mark his place, so I decided to make a corner bookmark to go with his card.
I used my new Pumice Stone Distress Ink for this one. The map paper is something I picked up ages ago with leaving or bon voyage cards in mind; the other patterned card is what I made with the nice grey ink, some sequin waste and some water. I stamped the hot air balloon (IndigoBlu) onto tissue and then used some more decoupage medium to stick it to some more distressed card. The ticket stamp is from Lili of the Valley. Here's a closer picture of the bookmark:
I made this with a 3-inch strip of card (made the same as the card for the actual card) which I then folded like a photo corner; on the back I stuck another smaller triangle of card and voila, a corner bookmark. This got a coat of Versamark and some clear embossing powder to seal it and make it more durable.
It's a horrible day here today, very foggy and freezing cold. I think I need to make some more Christmas cards to cheer myself up!
