Sunday Selections #721
Long ago, Kim of Frog Ponds Rock, (who no longer blogs), dreamed up a meme called Sunday Selections.
A place where those who were willing could put up photos they wanted to share, new, old, good, bad or indifferent, any photos you please.
Nothing rude or vulgar though.
And we don't mind at all if other bloggers care to join us.
The meme is now continued by Elephant's Child and I join in as do a few others. Andrew is one. Messymimi is another. Drop in to their blogs and have a look.
Wisewebwoman has also been joining us more often.
this month's calendar page, I wasn't able to find a Sugar Skulls/Day of the Dead calendar for this year.
Our Victoria Square Christmas tree, the same as every year for quite a while now, with its red and gold bows, the gold at least is a bit glittery.
street decorations were minimal
Rundle Mall had a giant inflatable Santa-with-camera surrounded by some small trees
in my own neighbourhood this was the only house decoration I could find, but in the next suburb just a couple of blocks away,
there was a brush fence covered in gold and silver bows
and a gate a bit further on had two of these pretty wreaths.
this year's Nordic gnome has legs, while my older one has just a rounded base
fireworks seen by "no-one" and her best friend down at Semaphore Beach on New Year's Eve
and a very short video of those fireworks, I hope it plays
I finally got my new kettle down off the shelf, it's been up there for ten years waiting for the old kettle to die. The old one isn't quite dead yet, but the auto shut-off doesn't always work anymore, so I retired her. I quickly discoverd the new kettle has a shorter cord
and the only available power point (outlet) is way over in the corner behind the huge microwave where I used to have the old kettle in the furthest outlet but had to swuitch the plugs around so the new kettle plug in now on the right and the microwave is on the left. Of course I can't reach that far (which is why the old kettle remained switched on all the time) so I now have a wooden chopstick to reach over and flip the microwave on when I need it.
All this means there is no available power point for the toaster, so I carry it on a tray (to catch crumbs) into the living/dining/everything else room and plug it into the powerboard under the tv bench. And when it cools down after making my toast I carry it back into the kitchen where it lives beside the hotplates (hob).
here's a great start to 2025, filthy stinking sludge bubbling up out of my bathroom floor again. (Friday) I cleaned it up after a lot of swearing and a few minutes later>
it happened again running across the floor and down into the shower drain. I wasn't going to phone Housing and be stuck on hold for hours so I stormed off to the bus stop and into the Housing office in the city, where I still had to wait almost an hour before a housing officer could see me. He arranged a work order and told me plumbers would be out asap to fix the problem.
That happened yesterday, a lovely tall man with his daughter apprentice came out and checked the flushing of the toilet and noticed the swirling burbling inefficency of it and proceeded to open three separate drains, then a fourth, and began trying to remove blockages caused by tree roots. The stench was incredible. The drains are all very old and cracked and this happens on a regular basis.
When they finally finished I gave them each a cold ginger beer as a thank you for doing such stinky work on such a hot day.
Now for something more cheerful:
"no-one" left a couple of chillies to dry on the plant and drop seeds which grew and now she has 23 seedlings to give away.
the girls had their nails polished again for Christmas, shimmery rose pink.
protective apron/poncho with her hair bow worn as a bow tie while drawing with chalk on the back porch
swinging high
another hair bow as bow tie outfit
and on the swing again.
Happy New Year everyone!
That was an unpleasant start to the new year, but I'm glad for you that it was soon fixed
ReplyDeletePretty nail polish and lovely bow ties!
Happy New Year to you and yours!
jabblog; thank you, Happy new year to you too. The pipes drama is never over, all the pipes here need replacing and of course Housing doesn't have a budget for that.
DeleteUgh! I hope that drain situation is resolved! It's funny that you have to carry your toaster into the living room to use it. Don't we all develop strange work-arounds because of the peculiarities of our houses? I used to have to turn on the Christmas lights with a bamboo pole when they were on our avocado tree, because I couldn't reach the outlet -- but now the lights are on a different tree and I can reach the power. Whew!
ReplyDeleteSteve Reed; rescued you from spam. The problem did get fixed, but that didn't last long, it's back with a vengeance now and I'm just waiting for a decent hour to call the emergency plumber. It's only 5:10am Monday here.
DeleteThankfully I don't use the toaster often.
I am so glad you could get the toilet issue fixed quickly.
ReplyDeleteLove the girls and the decorations you shared.
Elephant's Child; the pipes have been cleared as much as possible but the toilet still gurgles and drains more slowly than it should.
DeleteI like the decorations, but wish there had been more. Maybe people aren't feeling very Christmassy? I love the girls too and they are very good about sitting still while their nails dry.
Such an inconvenience, but at least you are starting the New Year with working drains now. It's good that they were repaired within a day. Going to the office in person was a brilliant tactic. I hope you'll be getting a seedling, so you can show us what develops. More happy playtime for the girls! They are quite busy having fun.
ReplyDeleteVal; it's an ongoing inconvenience, but at least the floor drain isn't overflowing just now. I always go in to the office instead of waiting on hold forever becaue my phone battery always ends up flat. I love seeing the girls happy. I won't be getting a seedling as I can't eat chillies, but I'm sure "no-one" will have enough friends to take one or two each.
DeleteI saw that first sideways drain picture and thought it was an electrical outlet that blew up. 😄
ReplyDeleteMike; I meant to turn the pictures but forgot. An electrical outlet would most likely cause a fire and I really hope that never happens.
DeleteBeautiful tree! Imagine, our huge one in fron of the castle fell due to strong wind.
ReplyDeleteSo no tree this Christmas.
Santa is cute!
We slept through the (private) fireworks, I think our city no public one.
Great you found a solution with that chopstick!
Sounds so familiar with the toaster. Ingo installed a socket in the bathroom and put his gigantic coffee machine there.
Our toaster is unter the heating, as we don´t use it often... And the airfryer is behind the kitchen door.
What a stinky start to the year!
You made me so laugh.
Cabin in Madaley/Perth. Ingo woke me at night, "It´s RAINING!!!!" I love rain on a tinned roof and it really sounded like that.
Brekkie, me, "didn´t you flush?" - a neighbor´s cabin´s tube broke and the sh.... came down our side in sprinkles.
And, see??? You give beer and I was kind (we had none and we needed to catch the bus). The maintenance-guy said, "most people yell at me, just you ask gentle".
Not his fault the cabins are old...
Fun outfits for the girls - a happy New Year without stinky incidents ;-)
Iris; our tree is supported by heavy cables and framework I think. Private fireworks here are illegal, though many people who are new to Australia don't know the rules and then some who do know the rules ignore them anyway, so there's a fire or three each year.
DeleteI don't use my toaster often, maybe four times a year.
The stinky overflowing pipes is an ongoing problem because all the pipes need replacing. Always there is a plumber's truck coming and going from one of these 110 flats. I am always nice to workmen, they do good work that we can't do ourselves and I appreciate that. How awful to wake up to a sh--- "rain".
Even my Dad had secured our Christmas tree at home! Reckon the storm came in too fast before they did that. It was a "sad sight" this year... "Lessons learned", I hope!!!
DeleteNo private fireworks is GOOD. When I still had a company-car... weeee. Any scratch you pay for!
Have the toaster on once in a while (now that I have Vegemite, too, especially ;-)...)
Here pipes are all good mostly.
We realised the "rain" was none only already sitting at the table with toast, tomato, avocado, cheese.... Even more Ewww. Ingo jumped like a spider on my question to check (cause he´d flushed) LOL.
I had to smile when reading about your "new" electric kettle, River. I have a "new" electric citrus juicer that has been sitting on a shelf for many years, in readiness. The Kambrook citrus juicer I use every morning to juice four oranges and one lemon I originally bought back in 1975, and have used ever since! I'm very attached to the little appliance! :)
ReplyDeleteI hope the temperature become cooler down your way through the coming week...take care during the heat. My cuddles to Lovely Lady Lola.
Lee; now that the new kettle is in use, I need to buy a replacement to sit on the shelf. Kambrook seems to be a good reliable brand for appliances, I hope to get ten years from the kettle, just like the previous one. Temperatures here are rising again, it is summer for sure. Lola is avoiding cuddles for now, I hope she doesn't have one of her headaches, but she isn't hiding away in the dark yet so maybe she's okay and just feeling the heat.
DeleteThose flat double horizontal plugs might be helpful. You can buy a pair in packet and one goes one direction, and the other in the other direction.
ReplyDeleteIt's a very nice nail polish colour.
Just as well the drains were sorted out quickly.
Andrew; I'd rather not put too much strain on the power point by doubling up, I don't want a fire. I do plan on saving and having the double outlet replaced by a four outlet some time this year. Then of curse I'll get the fuses checked to be sure thya are strong enough to carry the extra usage. The nail polish is a favourite colour of mine, I bought it for S (twins mother) for Christmas along with a bottle of glittery deep purple, to match her hair which is often purple tinted.
DeleteIf those drains weren't sorted quickly I'd be so furious, but only on the inside, which leads to poor sleeping.
Not even sure if our town of Bonners Ferry has it Christmas gala up.
ReplyDeleteDora; so many places have far less decorations this year.
DeleteSorry there weren't more Christmas decorations. I like the next street over decorations.
ReplyDeleteJoanne; the next street over was nice to look at, but it's sad not more people didn't decorate.
DeleteOh my, how pretty are those nails.
ReplyDeleteI would never want to be a plumber but someone has to do it - and roots of trees can and do cause big problems at times. It's good you went in person to the authorities instead of waiting on the phone for someone to tell of that problem, and wonder will the problem be fixed.
That must be a bit of a nuisances having to move the toaster each time you want to use it.
Margaret D; the nails are lovely aren't they? My Dad was a plumber so I know what NOT to put down drains, but tree roots just can't be helped when it comes to old clay pipes that have cracked and need replacing, which won't happen. I don't use the toaster very often.
DeleteWell done on the quick fix for the toilet, but OMG what a terrible mess. I was laughing a little as my toilet had been acting up for a year, tons of fixes that broke and then last complaint they replaced the entire unit with this posh high toilet with an automatic lid and almost silent flush. I was like a child telling visitors to test drive my toilet. I'd say your a wonderful grandma to those girlies.
ReplyDeleteXO
WWW
Wisewebwoman; it was a quick fix, but it hasn't lasted. It's Monday here and I was woken at 2am by the floor drain overflowing noisily, now, at 4:20am I am still awakerealising I am going to have to bathe and wash my hair in the kitchen sink. Right before I phone for an emergency plumber. The toilet itself is not a problem, it's the drains.
DeleteI love those little girls so much.
Love those precious girls.
ReplyDeleteGranny Annie; I do too 💖
DeleteHuh, I also have a replacement kettle standing on a high shelf ;) We never get 10 years from one, but we drink huge amounts of tea and use it for so much else.
ReplyDeletePlugin-places is a scarcity here too, old kitchens were not made for the modern amount of appliances. Whether you get someone to install a four-plug thingy or use those double plugs Andrew suggests it's the same stress on your installations. Have them checked and then save the money by just buying the double plugs - or even an extension with a cord ;)
Charlotte; I am not having extension cords running around my tiny kitchen, it's crowded anough already in that tiny space. I may just put up with my current solution as long as I possibly can. I don't use my kettle for anything besides tea and coffee so I can reasonably expect a long life from it.
DeleteYour coffee quote reminds me of one I like to say, I want my coffee black like the swamp mud and hot like the bayou in July.
ReplyDeleteA tiny kitchen can make life more difficult, especially with so few outlets.
The decor is pretty, your plumbing situation is not and I hope it is resolved.
The girls look so happy.
