C. E. Historians have focused on the institutional aspect of the process, with its progressive “softening” of the political frontier between the two cities through the ciuitas sine suffragio, which paved the way for eventual assimilation. This paper examines the archeological record of the territory of Caere in the period between the late fourth and the third centuries B. C. E., tracking the development of settlement patterns and the cultural changes revealed by the material culture. Complex dynamics developed in the territory of Caere during this crucial period, with different groups adopting diverging strategies to adapt to the challenges and opportunities of the new situation.

It follows the first, which focused on the ‘House of the Monolith’ and adjacent structures, along with the middle fortification wall.1 Volume 2 is not simply a presentation of data from excavation and survey, but also contains discussions of the relevance of those data for the history of the site and the wider region. It thus marks a second step, both in the presentation of the excavation data and also in their interpretation, which is here refined, expanded, and sometimes corrected in light of new information.

Approaches to Italian Urbanism in the Era of the Roman Conquest
Conference at the Royal Netherlands Institute in Rome (KNIR), 26-27 June 2019.
Between the 4th and the 2nd centuries BCE the Roman system expanded to include territories with very diverse urban cultures and traditions, from the old city states of Etruria to the polities of the Appennine uplands. Roman conquest has been traditionally considered a decisive factor in the development of urban culture throughout Italy, but it is becoming increasingly clear that the socioeconomic conditions and previous settlement patterns of each area were equally important. Conference participants seek to offer a more balanced evaluation of the urbanization process in Italy starting from a
detailed analysis of each area based on recent and current fieldwork.
