Energy storage systems play an essential role in today's production, transmission, and distributi... more Energy storage systems play an essential role in today's production, transmission, and distribution networks. In this chapter, the different types of storage, their advantages and disadvantages will be presented. Then the main roles that energy storage systems will play in the context of smart grids will be described. Some information will be given on interactions between energy storage systems and renewables. The emphasis will be on the problems that these storage systems will have to deal with and the possible means that can be used for this purpose. Also the battery management system will be presented as a general concept. The different types of regulation that take place in smart electrical systems (also called smart grids) and the role of energy storage systems will also be discussed. In the end, we will also present one of the biggest weaknesses of storage systems, among others, the degradation of batteries with their use.

On one hand, it is necessary to pursue a sensible policy of sustainable development based on the growth of their own renewable energy sources and electricity storage facilities. The aim of such measures is to increase self-consumption and ensure partial energy self-reliance while reducing carbon dioxide emissions into the atmosphere. On the other hand, the current geopolitical situation has indicated significant problems in the energy sectors of European Union countries. From the point of view of decision-makers at universities, the main concern should be ensuring the continuity of the operation of such a facility, including ensuring the energy security of the sites under management. This paper focuses on determining the effects of short-circuit current values on the operation of... more This paper focuses on determining the effects of short-circuit current values on the operation of high-voltage substations. The analyses performed focused on the dynamic and thermal effects on the short-circuit current for different input data configurations. The analyses of the dynamic effects of short-circuit current were performed in two ways. First, calculations were executed using the procedures contained in “IEC 60865-1:2012 Short-circuit currents, calculations of the effects of short-circuit currents. Part 1: Definitions and calculation methods”. Analytic calculations were accomplished for different values of the initial three-phase short-circuit current, the type of short circuit, the static tension force of the conductors, the stiffness of the structure and the methods of attaching the lashing chains. W części III cyklu artykułów o możliwościach przyłączeniowych SEE przedstawiono nieliniową optyma... more W części III cyklu artykułów o możliwościach przyłączeniowych SEE przedstawiono nieliniową optymalizację wartości mocy farm wiatrowych przyłączonych do sieci przesyłowej. Funkcją celu jest maksymalna sumaryczna moc generowana w farmach wiatrowych, przy uwzględnieniu dopuszczalnych obciążeń linii i transformatorów, dopuszczalnego salda wymiany zagranicznej oraz regulacyjnego minimum technicznego mocy generowanej w elektrowniach konwencjonalnych. W celu spełnienia przez rozwiązanie optymalne kryterium N-1 (wyłączenia pojedynczych elementów), zostały one włączone do zbioru ograniczeń. W wyniku zastosowania heurystycznego algorytmu symulowanego wyżarzania otrzymano wektor mocy, których wartości spełniają zarówno ograniczenia dla stanu normalnego jak i stanów N-1 oraz zapewniają maksymalne wykorzystanie możliwości farm. Rozważania zilustrowano przykładem optymalizacji generacji wiatrowej w sieci testowej C7M.

The exact nature of thermal processes occurring in an electric motor is often unknown. Thus, the ... more The exact nature of thermal processes occurring in an electric motor is often unknown. Thus, the estimation of temperature rise using mathematical models and computational experiments is becoming increasingly important. Thermal analysis is the key design aspect, which has become significant in the design process for electric motors. The thermal analysis of electric motors can be helpful in developing effective thermal monitoring methods. This analysis is crucial for a better understanding of the overall performance and failure prevention for these electrical motors. In this paper, laboratory investigations of thermal processes in low-voltage asynchronous motors are described. The analysis of the results leads to the conclusion that the classic single-exponential models do not match the dynamically changing thermal processes in electric motors especially in the case of intermittent motor operation.

Current barriers and challenges in balancing electrical power demands with the help of new socio-technical "smart" ideas are also presented. This paper is an attempt to assess the technical adequacy of existing power systems in relation to future demands enabling the implementation of these ideas.
