Contemporary processes and the selection of materials in historical urban greenery areas on example from Cracow and Warsaw

The paper will discuss urgent and topical problems that affect historical areas of urban open spa... more The paper will discuss urgent and topical problems that affect historical areas of urban open space. Its main goal will be the identification of phenomena which take place within it, and which mainly affect its natural tissue. The article will also contain such aspects like: an analysis of modern trends in revalorisation and the effects of its impact, an analysis of possible preventive measures that can be taken, as well as an evaluation of the influence of environmental factors on the condition of individual types of greenery. The problem of contemporary processes that take place in green areas located in the layouts of historical cities, towns and villages undertaken in the article constitutes a further development of research work that has been performed for many years at the Garden Design and Green Areas Division of the Institute of Landscape Architecture of the Faculty of Architecture of the Cracow University of Technology. The protection, revitalisation, regeneration and shaping of cultural and natural historical landscapes is a broad subject, in which the diagnosis of currently ongoing negative processes constitutes the basis of appropriately prepared guidelines and, afterwards, design work. The main objective of this article is analysing the changes that occur in material selections in areas of historical urban open spaces, against the background of the transformations of design tendencies, conservation ideas, environmental factors and civilizational needs. The article uses the research material of authors from the areas of Cracow and Warsaw.

Penderecki's Arboretum in Lusławice is an example of the creative and unique work of an outstandi... more Penderecki's Arboretum in Lusławice is an example of the creative and unique work of an outstanding composer, visionary and lover of trees. Based on the historic park was created, a new, outstanding work, a collection combining a huge number of taxa into elements of garden composition, based on significant achievements of garden art of classical culture. The high natural and cultural values seamlessly blend with the historical park and the surroundings of the Lusławice Manor. The property is a rare example today of creative development of the historic layout with new elements, without simultaneous destruction of the existing values, but rather their protection and flourishing, creating new values on a regional, national and, because of the creator himself, global scale.

The causes and effects of problems related to the genius loci protection of historic park tree st... more The causes and effects of problems related to the genius loci protection of historic park tree stands have multifaceted forms. Processes, procedures, and sometimes methods of protecting and caring for the tree and treestands in historical gardens aren't keeping up with rapid changes in our surroundings. Based on the research results, the author believes there is a need for intensification of actions aimed at popularizing the proper rules, design and maintenance, following the conservator's guidelines and reliable with modern maintenance and management methods of historic treestands. The main aim is to show the role of solutions, which gives quantifiable benefits on ways to change and improve the condition of historical gardens.

Due to intensive building works, strongly transformed urban spaces are unfriendly for trees, making their long-lasting adaptation hard. Using new building technologies and aiding places' preparation for trees and planting gives chances for their appropriate development and long-lasting existence. Accessible and taken solutions were characterized in the article with examples of realization.

Za szybkimi zmianami zachodzącymi w naszym otoczeniu nie nadążają procesy, procedury, a niekiedy metody ochrony i pielęgnacji drzew i drzewostanów w cennych historycznych założeniach ogrodowych. Z badań i doświadczeń autora wynika konieczność intensyfikacji działań mających na celu upowszechnienie właściwych zasad projektowych i wykonawczych, zgodnych z założeniami konserwatorskimi i spójnych z nowoczesnymi metodami gospodarki i pielęgnowania zabytkowych drzewostanów. Artykuł ma na celu uwypuklenie rozwiązań dających wymierne korzyści na drodze do poprawy stanu zachowania historycznych założeń ogrodowych.
