Signs of Spring

Daffodils light the dawn of Spring
with the color of the sun
calling to newly born flowers

"Come up and feel the warmth".

~Copyright Deborah~

Joy, joy!
At last, Spring has arrived!

Do you feel it in the air?

Do you hear it?

Do you see it?

Do you feel like singing?

Do you feel like frolicking in a green meadow?

Do you have the desire to see your windows shine?

Do you feel the urge to organize?

Do you feel like getting your hands dirty?

Do you feel like falling in love all over again?

Celebrate it!

Celebrate Sweet Spring!

Tell, me...
what does Spring mean to you?

~A Swan Story~

Is there anything more beautiful, more gentle, more graceful than a swan? To me the swan has always been a symbol of love, family, loyalty. The swan has been the subject of poets and artists alike. This is the story of a swan that my brother, sister-in-law, husband and myself met personally and up close this summer. We were in my brother's new pickup truck travelling in and around Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. We drove down to Pawley's Island to visit some gift shops and have some lunch. My brother was in a shop, my husband and I and our sister-in-law returned to the truck to wait for him.

This is the swan who lives at the pond at the gift shops in Pawley's Island, South Carolina.
We were told she ran her mate off because she is so tempermental
...and she bites!
We kept our distance and I begin snapping pictures.

As she had forced her mate to leave, actually two of them,
her only companions are ducks.

I got in the truck. Larry and Teresa were outside the truck looking at her.
She was about fed up with the picture taking and us looking at her.
She plodded toward Larry and Teresa with her big feet,
head down and determined.

Then she spread her wings and charged!

Larry and Teresa jumped in the truck as quickly as they could. The swan's head was in and out of the front window where Larry sat ducking..."ducking"...no pun intended.
He was really trying to dodge her attempts to bite him.
After she was through scaring the daylights out of Larry, she began munching on the side mirror. She was mad!

She was through with the mirror - we THOUGHT she was through with us.

When she was through with the side-view mirror, she walked away. Teresa got out of the truck...

Swan abruptly turned and marched toward Teresa - here she came again with that intent, determined look!
Good thing Teresa was fast on her feet!

THE END

So, if you ever have the opportunity to visit beautiful Pawley's Island, do so ... but be forwarned...

there is a swan...

~Winter Visitors~

We just filled out feeders this past weekend.
Our feathered friends were most happy to see that happen.
As we were putting out a feast for them, the birds flocked to the nearby trees, chirping and spreading the word to others.
They could barely wait for us to return to our own nest so they would feel safe enough to descend upon the seed.

Once we went inside, this little guy so happily sang for us - loudly!
He expressed his gratitude with melody.

As always Red Head hogged this feeder.

Christmas Eve day we had a yard full of deer.
Most were lounging in the sun that warmed the clearing.
Older ones were roaming the woods and making a meal of the ivy that covers a lot of our back property. I couldn't capture them with my camera. They were mostly camouflaged by the wooded area.

This little beauty was munching on a tree.

A young one.

Coming into the clearing.

I think they heard me.

Part of the herd relaxing and grooming.

Just hanging out.

Deborah and the Duck

At one time we lived across from a pond. We were accustomed to the ducks and geese in our area. Many times we would have a yard full of geese.

One day a strange looking little duck came into our yard. He soon made his way up onto our porch. Even when we were relaxing on the porch he would come sit on the rail.

We, of course, were loving this and to entice him to return we would give him bread and crackers. He would even take bread that I would hold in my mouth. (We even put up with the mess he made on the porch. Larry would hose the porch off every evening after our fowl friend left.) He would come into our screened-in back porch and sit on our outdoor table. We named him Forrest because he was so daffy sometimes, but so loving, friendly and open.

Sometimes I would pick him up and hold him and he didn’t seem to mind at all. Often we would walk over to visit him at the pond where he spent a lot of time.

For two years this strange duck came to our home to be fed and talked to and just to hang out. He became part of our family and I truly believe he felt like he was ours. He was very personable and not afraid at all. You can see in the picture a piece of bread in my mouth and the little fellow taking it.

With a pond across the road, there were several geese and ducks - but none like this one. (We later found out that he was a Muscovy Duck). We were used to seeing geese fly over in formation. That’s a beautiful site. But what we watched for was our friend. We could see him flying in the distance, then he would circle over our home and we knew it was "our" duck. We would call out to him. He circled a couple more times, then he would come down for a visit. He would fly in, making a most graceful landing. He would visit for awhile, then off he would go to the pond across the road. It was a most glorious thing to see him landing and taking off. He would stand just at our feet before leaving. We could feel the breeze from his wings as he left. Building began at the pond and he disappeared. We searched for him, but to no avail. We would sit on the porch and watch the skies. I was so afraid he had been injured or worse. He didn't return.

One spring day two years later, we heard a knocking on our front door - I opened the door. Not seeing anyone, I looked down only to see our friend prancing past me into the house! It was like he had never been away! He walked right into the house! He spent that spring and summer with us - then left again as before. We searched and searched for him but we never saw our feathered friend again. Forrest was part of our family and we miss him.

My granddaughter Kathryn and I rode through my neighborhood after school Friday. We have several ponds closeby and we love to see what's going on at the ponds. This is the time of year to see families of geese and watch how the little ones grow into adults.

Proud parents

Stay with your papa, dears!

A gaggle of goslings

Curious little ones made their way out of the pond toward us.

Aren't they sweet?!

~Today's Backyard Friends~

My feathered friends are really out in full force this beautiful day. Must be the springlike weather here. The colorful goldfinch always make me smile.

I've seen a congregation of woodpeckers this morning - they seem to be coming in flocks, something I've never seen before.
