Make e-mail notifications clearer and more precise on page renames
Open, Needs TriagePublic

Description

If you get a notification about a page move, it may be accompanied by a link-look-alike to the page, so the wording, but link fails. In order to get to the page with its new name, you have to go through some loops and hoops on the target wiki. Even more so, when things were changed after the e-mail generation and you were not notified because you were not quick enough to read the e-mail and respond to it keeping the notification process.

Readers of the message are not informed whether watching and/or notifications would continue with the old page and its old name, even if it does not exist any more, or it is inherited by the new page and the new name, which of those they need to open at least once to keep being notified. Yes, one can look all that up in the wiki, if one is inclined and knows the details.

I want notification messages that state every aspect clearly, that have links to the previous and the new pages names.

The rest is a sample message making clear that it is sub-optimal in the sense mentioned above :-)

The email message does not include the correct link. The moved page history states the new page name correctly:

. (Trizek (WMF) moved page Translations:Help:Notifications/77/ksh to Translations:Help:Notifications/Notifications types/77/ksh without leaving a redirect)

Overview of the current issues with the page rename emails.

  1. The following event (recorded in the page history) "Etonkovidova moved page Mavetuna58z to Mavetuna58yz without leaving a redirect)" will trigger the following email:
Dear ET13,

The Wikipedia page "Mavetuna58z" has been created on 4 August 2016 by
Etonkovidova, with the edit summary: -

 See https://en.wikipedia.beta.wmflabs.org/wiki/Mavetuna58z for the
current revision.

Note that additional changes to the page "Mavetuna58z" will not result
in any further notifications, until you have logged in and visited the
page.

The link https://en.wikipedia.beta.wmflabs.org/wiki/Mavetuna58z leads to the page that states that "This page has been deleted. ". Nevertheless, the new page "Mavetuna58yz" is, in fact, added to warchlists of users who previously watched "Mavetuna58z".

If you get a notification about a page move, it may be accompanied by a link-look-alike to the page, so the wording, but link fails.

This only happens when the redirect is suppressed, though.

Readers of the message are not informed whether watching and/or notifications would continue with the old page and its old name

Since T16901: Email notification mistakes log action for new page creation has been fixed, we have short customisations for the generic enotif body, like https://translatewiki.net/wiki/MediaWiki:Enotif_body_intro_moved/en , but I'm not sure we should use them to add such details. This looks blocked on T44458.
