I just love desserts that masquerade as "salads” or, is
it salads that pretend to be “desserts” ~ and Aunt Phyl too!
I’m sure most of you have an “Aunt Phyl.” Back in Ohio, my parents and many others have
passed on ~ Aunt Phyl is the one who keeps the remainder of us connected; us
cousins, in particular.
This isn’t her only good quality; she’s also
fun-loving, has a really keen sense of humor, always wears a smile on her
face and, she knows a great recipe when she meets one! Everyone needs an Aunt Phyl
just like mine!
Aunt Phyl & Uncle Jake |
Aunt Phyl sent me an email a few days ago, telling me about this dessert which was served at her euchre club recently. I read the recipe, rushed to the grocery
store, and hurried home to get
this salad made. It is sinful!
Those crunchy pecans and the rich brown sugar are the
special finishing touches, hiding the grapes below, in a creamy smooth sauce. Who ever thought of combining grapes with
cream cheese, sour cream, sugar and pecans?
This has a plethora of textures and the colors are good too, especially
if you use red grapes. It can be made a
day ahead of time as well.
This can be a salad served on greens or it can be a yummy
treat for dessert. Even though, it has
grapes in it, and no apples, the flavors remind me of a caramel apple at the
county fair or at Halloween time. This
will be a great ambrosial dish for our cook-outs this summer, or a potluck, and
yours too!
Just beware ~ no matter whether it’s a salad or a dessert ~
it’s HIGHLY ADDICTIVE!!!
Creamy Dessert Grape
Salad
Ingredients:
3-4 pounds of seedless grapes, red or green
8 ounces cream cheese, at room temperature
8 ounces sour cream
1 teaspoon vanilla
1/3 cup sugar (or Splenda)
Topping:
2/3 cup brown sugar (or 1/3 cup Splenda brown sugar)
1 cup chopped pecans
Method:
In a large bowl, beat the cream cheese, sour cream, vanilla
and sugar with an electric mixer until smooth and creamy.
Add grapes to the sauce and combine well.
Top grapes with brown sugar.
Sprinkle pecans over all.
Refrigerate a few hours or make the day before.
Mix together before serving.
Makes about 8-10 servings
It’s heavenly
luscious!!!
Thank you, Aunt Phyl!

ReplyDeleteDiane, wow! Thankfully, there was no shortage of aunts, uncles and cousins in my family. I hope you try the grape salad, it's delicious!
I love grape salad, and I got the recipe from my Aunt Pat.
ReplyDeletemy grandma used to make this and we loved it growing up! anne
ReplyDeleteLinda, isn't it great!
ReplyDeleteannie, it's good, I had never heard of it until recently.
This one is a new one, but I do like it. I have never had grapes in an ambrosia type salad! I imagine they stay juicy and never get soggy like apples do. My old ambrosia will be replaced with this. Tell Aunt Phyl thanks and that she knows what good is. Have a great evening.
ReplyDeleteI don't have an aunt Phyl, but I have a great aunt Phyl...
ReplyDeleteAnd that's a great picture of her and Uncle Jake!
Absolutely delicious...I know!
ReplyDeleteCan't wait to take this to the next church gathering..
That looks and sounds delicious, who would have thought of dressing up grapes with cream cheese! Yum!
ReplyDeleteMy grandma Phyllis used to be that person... and she would have been all over this salad for sure! Sounds absolutely delicious!
ReplyDeleteTina, you're right! The grapes stay juicy and they hold up very well in the sauce. It disappears quickly too!
ReplyDeleteBubba, yes, you do!!! Remember all the fun times we had with the whole family there, by the pool? It's a really good pic of the two of them, and I'm happy to "see" you here! Love you!
Shug, this will be a hit at your church gathering! It's a delicious for anyone who likes grapes!
Jeannie, thanks! I never would've thought of it for sure. I was really surprised with how yummy it is!
Kristy, thanks! You will get some red color using red grapes. It would look great and taste great!
Jenn, good for your grandma! It's great that your family had her.
ReplyDeleteI love these kind of salads!

ReplyDeleteCheers Pam

Hi Pam! This sounds really good. I love anything with pecans! My Aunt Judy and her cousin Joey (Joanna) are the "Aunt Phyls" of our family. One, or the other, always knows what's going on and keeps in touch with everyone!
ReplyDeleteI bet this is good. I could look at it and think, hmm, at least there are grapes. I went to a dinner recently and they served "Cookie Salad" Same ingredients as the Grape Salad, but there were crushed up cookies in it. Ugh. I still don't know why anybody would even think to make it and it was way too sweet. Hi, Aunt Phyl!
ReplyDeletePam, thanks! Me too!
ReplyDeleteVal, great minds think alike for sure!
Jaoa, thanks! Glad you like it!
Cake, that's great for you all to stay connected. Aunts are the best! I agree with the pecans too, esp. in desserts!
Karen, thanks for saying "hi" to Aunt Phyl! I'm with you---the cookie think doesn't sound so good. Seems like it could be a soggy mess. Have a good weekend!
The flavors do sound unusual but really decadent together! I had an aunt Phyl but she recently died. She would of loved this!
ReplyDeleteWe'll call it a salad and I'll have an extra helping.
ReplyDeletePam, this sounds delicious. Unfortunately, I don't have an Aunt Phyl - I think I've become her:-). That happens as you grow older. Have a wonderful weekend. Blessings...Mary
ReplyDeleteReeni, thanks! It is sort of decadent! Sorry about your aunt.
ReplyDeleteCathy, that works fine for me! Thanks!
Mary, I bet you're as great an Aunt Phyl as you are a cook! Blessings to you.
Fresh and cool for a hot summer day. Thanks for the recipe!
ReplyDeleteThis is a lovely throw back! Yum.
ReplyDeleteI bet this is completely addictive! I love desserts that pretend to be salads too.
ReplyDeleteMarina, yes! Perfect for a hot day!
ReplyDeleteGrubarazzi, thanks for stopping by and your comment!
Mary, it is! Very good flavors here!
It reminds me a little of ambrosia salad that all the relatives used to make! I love that this one is just grapes. The pecan topping sounds delicious!
