Alberto Garzoni
Baillie-Gifford DPhil candidate at the University of Oxford (Faculty of Theology and Religion; Departments of Patristics and Christian Ethics). Middle Reader at the Canterbury Institute (Oxford).
I study whether Augustine's theology of the voice can shape contemporary models of Christian activism. Former research projects addressed the Augustinian notions of public humility and civic virtue, Augustine’s ideal of the Christian statesman, Augustine’s understanding of the family and incorporation, and the political relevance of these notions.
In November 2019 I graduated cum laude from the Galilean School of Higher Education (Moral Studies class) in Padua, by discussing a dissertation on theologico-political themes within Augustine's sermons on martyrdom. In February 2019 I earned a master's degree in Philosophy (Scienze Filosofiche) from Padua University (final grade: 110/110 cum laude). In the Spring Semester of 2018 I was selected to take part in an international exchange program and spent a semester at Boston University.
I pursue additional interests in the humanities, politics and Catholic spirituality.

This paper (in Italian) surveys the presence of Augustinian materials and concepts in the first book of John Wyclif's De Civili Dominio. It concludes that Wyclif's Augustine is a virtual Augustine -- the result of an original and radical process of assimilation. This foreshadows a more systematic investigation of Augustine's reception in the works of John Wyclif and, conversely, of Wyclif's own role in the history of political Augustinianism.
