Presently, several surgical approaches are used for reconstructing large defects of the cervical trachea, reminding us that no single technique has gained wide clinical acceptance. We resected a U-shaped cartilage from 6 to 8 rings of the trachea of 10 New Zealand rabbits. We used a porous high-density polyethylene (PHDP) prosthesis to reconstruct the cervical trachea, and did not perform a tracheotomy during this operation. We followed up the rabbits for 4 to 10 months. One of the rabbits died in the second month because of respiratory distress; another was lost in the fourth month of the study while delivering young. The others continued to thrive; in fact, one of them gave birth 3 times after our study and was well able to take care of her young. At the end of the study, the rabbits were painles...

Twenty-two patients with facial nerve paralysis due to acoustic neuroma, trauma, cholesteatoma, and parotid carcinoma were included in this study. In the lower facial region, the temporal muscle was suspended to the lower lip. In the upper facial region, eyelid gold implantation was performed. The reanimation results of the upper and lower facial regions were graded as excellent, good, fair, and poor in consideration of the symmetry after rest and smile according to May classification in the third month after the surgery. The study group comprised 15 men (68.2%) and 5 women (31.8 %) (mean age, 63.82 ± 14.18 years; range, 8-78 years). Of the patients, 18.2% (n = 4) had acoustic neuroma, 40.9% (n = 9) had facial trauma, 27.3% (n = 6) had cholesteatoma, and 13.6% (n = 3) had parotid carcinoma.Reanimation techniques were applied to 40.9% (n = 9) of the patients during the first 2-4 years, whereas 59.1% (n = 13) of patients underwent surgery after 4 years. In a total of 17 patients (77.3%) who had lower lip intervention, 4 patients (23.5%) had excellent results, 7 patients (41.2%) had good results, and 6 patients (35.3%) had moderate results. In the 22 patients who underwent the eyelid procedure, 5 patients (22.7 %) had excellent results, 13 patients (59.1 %) had good results, and 3 patients (18.2 %) had moderate results. Poor results were not observed in any patient. Facial paralysis is a disease that causes serious functional and psychological problems in patients. Therefore, the choice of treatment method is dependent on the etiology, duration of paralysis, expectations of the patient, and experience of the surgeon. Being less invasive methods, obtaining immediate results, requiring single surgical stage, and having long-lasting results and dynamic muscle transfer and static suspension methods are preferred.

Cross-sectional analysis. Forty-eight 48 voice professionals and 52 non-voice professionals with dysphonia were included in this study. All participants underwent a complete ear, nose, and throat examination and an evaluation for pathologies that might affect vocal quality. Participants were asked to complete the Turkish versions of the Voice Handicap Index-30 (VHI-30), Perceived Stress Scale (PSS), and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS). HADS scores were evaluated as HADS-A (anxiety) and HADS-D (depression). Dysphonia status was evaluated by grade, roughness, breathiness, asthenia, and strain (GRBAS) scale perceptually. The results were compared statistically. Significant differences between the two groups were evident when the VHI-30 and PSS data were compared (P = .00001 and P = .00001, respectively). However, neither HADS score (HADS-A ...

This study included 1647 patients (801 males and 846 females) admitted to outpatient clinics. All patients underwent a nasopharyngeal biopsy for a nasopharyngeal mass. In addition, a blind biopsy was taken if there was suspicion of nasopharyngeal carcinoma, even in the absence of a mass lesion. The pathological diagnoses were analysed on the basis of the age, sex and clinical presentation of the patients. Patient age ranged between 18 and 85 years; the mean was 36 years. Patient age differed significantly between those with benign and malignant disease (p=0.000); the risk of malignancy increased with age. Benign disease was found in 97.4% of the patients. Reactive lymphoid hyperplasia was the most common condition; it was found in 92.71% of benign cases. Undifferentiated nasopharyngeal cancer was the most common malignant d...

We assessed 100 patients (mean age, 43.87, SD 10.12; 62 females, 38 males) and 20 healthy volunteers (9 females, 11 males). Patients whose blood serum vitamin B12 levels were below 180 pg/mL were deemed to be vitamin B12-deficient. The effect of vitamin B12 replacement treatment on hearing was examined using audiometric tests between 250 and 20000 Hz, and we compared results with a visual analogue scale (VAS) before and after treatment, which helped to produce an objective assessment of the therapeutic results in tinnitus. Tinnitus was found to be unilateral in 57% of cases (the right ear in 56% and the left ear in 44% of these cases) and bilateral in 43% of cases. Of the patients with tinnitus, 63 had low B12 vitamin levels, and 37 had normal B12 vitamin levels. No stati...

We aimed to evaluate the course and prognosis of upper airway obstruction in 20 newborns with PRs. Among 15 isolated and 5 syndromic cases, 7 patients fell into Group I, 5 into Group II and 8 into Group III, respectively, according to the clinical classification system proposed by Caouette-Laberge. The 12 patients in Groups I and II were treated with positioning and gavage feeding, whereas the 6 patients in Group III underwent bilateral mandibular distraction. Decannulation or avoidance of tracheostomy was achieved in all of them. A patient who had a significant comorbidity was managed with tracheostomy and one patient expired due to pulmonary problems. When conservative measures fail, mandibular distraction osteogenesis should be considered to obviate tracheostomy in newborns with mic...

To compare the complications of surgical tracheostomy (ST) versus percutaneous dilatational tracheostomy (PDT) by means of MRI control up to 1 month after closed tracheostomy. There was no death related to tracheostomy. In both groups there were two preoperative complications: one minor hemorrhage and one subcutaneous empysema in the ST group, and one minor bleeding and one puncture ofendotracheal tube cuff in the PDT group. When the early and the late postoperative complications of the two groups were compared, it was observed that in the ST group, five early (one minor bleeding, three stomal infections and one accidental decannulation), and two late (one peristomal granuloma and one persistent stoma) postoperative complications had occurred. In the PDT group, four early (...

On oropharynx examination, a polypoid mass was detected in the right vocal cord and firmness in the floor of the mouth, 3-4 cm in size. Computed tomography showed a stone in the right Wharton's duct. Saliva came out of the orifice of the Wharton's duct on palpation. The stone was removed transorally. Despite its huge size (30x20 mm), the patient had no complaint. No recurrence was seen during a follow-up period of 18 months with ultrasonography.

Treatment of nasal septal deviation in pediatric patients is one of the biggest challenges in rhinology. Surgery may alter craniofacial growth patterns, and so it may be indicated only in the selected cases. The use of external nasal dilators is a relatively new treatment modality in nasal obstruction. This study was performed to assess the efficacy of external nasal dilator in pediatric nasal septal deviation patients. Seventy-six children who were diagnosed with nasal septal deviation at our outpatient clinic were included in the study. The patients were divided into 2 groups: the external nasal dilator group was composed of 48 children that had used an external nasal dilator for at least 1 month and still been using, while the control group was comprised of 28 children that had not received any treatment and had not used an external nasal dilator. The parents of the children were asked to complete the obstructive sleep apnea 18 questionnaire. In addition, the external nasal dilator group was asked to complete the questionnaire after stopping external nasal dilator use for 2 weeks and the control group also repeated the obstructive sleep apnea 18 questionnaire. The obstructive sleep apnea 18 questionnaire results were significantly different between the external nasal dilator group and the control group at the beginning of the study (i.e., when patients in the external nasal dilator group were still using their dilators, P = 0.000). On the other hand, there was no difference between the 2 groups after the patients in the external nasal dilator group had stopped using their external nasal dilator (P = 0.670). External nasal dilator use relieved nasal septal deviation, which narrows the nasal valve. The results of this study suggest that external nasal dilator could be used in patients that are not candidates for septoplasty.

Macroscopically, nine of 10 (90%) perforations were closed in the fascia lata-covered HDPP group. Histopathological examination of these nine rabbits revealed that the continuity of cartilage was disturbed in the perforation areas. Granulation tissue was inverted in areas in which the cartilage continuity was disturbed. The HDPP had remained intact at the edge of the perforation. In the HDPP group, six of 10 implants were still perforated (60%) and four (40%) were closed. The fascia lata-covered HDPP implant had a significantly higher perforation closure rate than that of the HDPP implant alone (P<0.05).
