Legal action on behalf of victims of terrorism has attempted to force the sale of cultural artifacts on loan to U.S. institutions in order to compensate those victims. Such action jeopardizes the participation of American institutions in international cultural exchanges. The authors maintain that archaeological artifacts should not be sold to satisfy a court judgment, regardless of the actions of a particular regime, and that it should be possible for nations to share their cultural heritage without fear of loss.

The ANS has acquired a box mirror formed from two Antinous medallions of Smyrna. Consideration of the techniques of manufacture and comparison with other modified coins of Antinous support the antiquity of the manufac- ture of the mirror. The combination of a portrait of Antinous, a Dionysiac reverse in the form of a female panther, and an internal mirrored surface is the starting point for an examination of the cultural context of this piece.

What follows here is the abstract as found in the preprint version.]: The authors present a non-technical overview of the database structures that record information about the Post-Bronze Age ceramic assemblage at ilion. its purpose is not to fully document the system used at troia, but instead to identify practices that can be useful in other contexts. The article particularly stresses that it is important to assign a primary identity to all sherds that will be subject to individual study and that this identity can be re-used in such record keeping processes as drawing and photography. further use of such identities in print and digital publication is likely to make online linking of ceramic data to contextual information easier in the future.

This paper details a current project at the American Numismatic Society: Online Coins of the Roman Empire (OCRE), an open-access catalogue of Roman Imperial coin types. The paper discusses linked data approaches applied to numismatic collections, the application architecture of the project, and the practical functionality of the project’s web interface, illustrating its value to researchers.

Reports on current work relevant to the role of Linked Open Data (LOD) in the study of the ancient world. As a term, LOD encompasses approaches to the publication of digital resources that emphasize stability, relatively fine-grained access to intellectual content via public URIs, and re-usability as defined both by publication of machine reabable data and by publication under licenses that permit further copying of available materials. This collection presents a series of reports from participants in 2012 and 2013 sessions of the NEH-funded Linked Ancient World Data Institute. The contributors come from a wide range of academic disciplines and professional backgrounds. The projects they represent reflect this range and also illustrate many stages of the process of moving from concept to implementation, with a focus on results achieved by the mid 2013 to early 2014 timeframe.
