Three new cyclostellettamines, cyclostellettamine G (1), dehydrocyclostellettamines D (2), and E ... more Three new cyclostellettamines, cyclostellettamine G (1), dehydrocyclostellettamines D (2), and E (3), were isolated together with the known cyclostellettamine A (4) from a marine sponge of the genus Xestospongia as histone deacetylase inhibitors. Their structures were determined by spectral and chemical methods. They inhibit histone deacetylase derived from K562 human leukemia cells with IC 50 values ranging from 17 to 80 lM.

Seven new isomalabaricane derivatives, rhabdastins A-G (1-7), and a new monocyclic triterpene gly... more Seven new isomalabaricane derivatives, rhabdastins A-G (1-7), and a new monocyclic triterpene glycoside, rhabdastoside A (8), have been isolated from the methanol extract of the sponge Rhabdastrella globostellata, collected at Amami-oshima, Japan. Three of them were isolated as their corresponding methyl esters, rhabdastins A-D (1-3). Their structures were determined on the basis of spectroscopic and X-ray diffraction analyses. The isolated compounds were evaluated for their cytotoxicity against the proliferation of promyelocytic leukemia HL-60 cells. Compounds 4, 5, 7, and 11, possessing a cyclopentane side chain, exhibited weak activity, with IC(50) values of 21, 29, 44, and 11 μM, respectively, while compounds 1, 2, and 3, with a 2-substituted-propanoate side chain, were inactive at 100 μM. In addition, the mechanism of cytotoxicity of compounds 4 and 5 was investigated.

Two new polyacetylene carboxylic acids, petroformynic acids B (3) and C (4), were isolated from a... more Two new polyacetylene carboxylic acids, petroformynic acids B (3) and C (4), were isolated from a marine sponge Pertrosia sp. as cytotoxic constituents. Their structures were determined by interpretation of 2D NMR data and tandem FABMS data. Absolute stereochemistry of 3 was assigned by application of the modified Mosher analysis. Petroformynic acids exhibit moderate cytotoxic activity against P388 cells.

Their structures were identified by analysis of spectral data. All compounds inhibited the growth of several Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria in the agar plate diffusion assay.

The structure of massadine has been deduced from spectral data. Massidine inhibited GGTase I from Candida albicans with an IC 50 value of 3.9 µM.

A screening program aimed at discovering inhibitors of the bacterial type III secretion system id... more A screening program aimed at discovering inhibitors of the bacterial type III secretion system identified the MeOH extract of the Caribbean sponge Caminus sphaeroconia as an active hit in the initial assay. Bioassay-guided fractionation of the crude extract led to the isolation of caminosides A (1) to D (4), a family of antimicrobial glycolipids. The structures of the three new caminosides B (2) to D (4) have been elucidated by spectroscopic analysis.

The calcareous sponges collected during Indonesian-Dutch research projects, incorporated in the c... more The calcareous sponges collected during Indonesian-Dutch research projects, incorporated in the collections of the Naturalis
Biodiversity Center (formerly the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie and the Zoölogisch Museum of the University
of Amsterdam), are described and discussed. A total of 37 species were distinguished, of which 16 are new to science, while several others are very poorly known. The new species are Clathrina purpurea sp.nov., Clathrina beckingaesp.nov., Clathrina sororcula sp.nov., Arthuria tubuloreticulosa sp.nov., Ernstia indonesiae sp.nov., Ernstia chrysopssp.nov., Ernstia klautauae sp.nov., Ernstia naturalis sp.nov., Ascandra kakaban sp.nov., Ascandra crewsi sp.nov., Ascaltis
angusta sp.nov., Pericharax orientalis sp.nov., Sycetta vinitincta sp.nov., Anamixilla singaporensis sp.nov., Grantessa
borojevici sp.nov. and Grantessa tenhoveni sp.nov. An additional six species reported from Indonesia, but not represented in our material, are briefly characterized.
