User talk:Ottava Rima
Welcome to my user talk page. Past material until May 2010 is located at here, after here.
I decided to re-prioritize and I will be gone for at least the duration of finishing my real life work.
Unblocked
I have reviewed your block and lifted the indef nature of it. I am warning, and counselling, you to be civil, always. It costs nothing and is the mark of a true gentleman. fr33kman 23:41, 22 September 2011 (UTC)

Apology accepted. Willing to see you more constructive, as it is obvious that you have enough energy to work on Wikimedia projects. --Millosh 17:54, 23 September 2011 (UTC)

Legal Counsel
Hi there - I got your request and will have someone in our legal department take a look at it. Feel free to contact me at [email protected] if you have any questions. Cheers. Geoffbrigham 02:53, 16 October 2011 (UTC)
Hi Ottava,
The following explanation is intended for general information purposes only and is not legal advice. Legal advice depends on the specific facts and circumstances of each individual's situation and those seeking specific legal advice or assistance should contact an attorney.
To answer your question, WMF is protected from liability here by the Digital Millennium Copyright Act ("DMCA"). As you know, the DMCA shields organizations like WMF from liability for copyright infringement when the infringing material is uploaded to its servers by third-party users. Copyright holders who believe that their copyrights are being infringed by Wikimedia Commons cannot simply sue the Wikimedia Foundation ("WMF"). Instead, they must send WMF what's known as a "DMCA Takedown Notice." Once WMF receives such a notice, we may comply and, assuming it is valid, take down the infringing material without incurring any liability. See 17 U.S.C. § 512(c). While the de minimus exception to copyright infringement arguably might be receiving less and less deference by the courts in recent years, the safe harbor provision mentioned above confers robust statutory-based immunity for websites like Wikimedia Commons.
We also believe that Wikimedia Commons is legally entitled to host certain images under the "fair use" exception to copyright infringement (although the community presently does not allow fair use on the Wikimedia Commons site by choice). This is so when (1) the editor on Wikimedia Commons freely makes this content available without charge, (2) the display of the image is "transformative," (3) the hosting of the images has no effect on the direct or licensing market for the works, and (4) there is a good faith effort to ensure that all material hosted on Wikimedia Commons complies with copyright law. See Field v. Google, 412 F. Supp. 2d 1106, 1117–23 (D. Nev. 2006). All that said, the community obviously has the right to delete the image if it feels it violates its own policies and guidelines.
I hope you find this helpful.

Talk:Global bans
Please stop playing into Seth's replies to you. This is the second time recently you two have gone into a ridiculous back-and-forth. Steven Walling (WMF) • talk 04:12, 10 November 2011 (UTC)
- Well, it is the topic of global bans so it will happen. Remember, you are an official from the WMF. I am not, so I am able to point out the problems and flaws of detractors. You have to be neutral and that can be quite limiting. Ottava Rima (talk) 13:46, 10 November 2011 (UTC)
I debugged the {{User SUL Box|fr}} for the french tag
I tried to find the problem for the french tag. It works now but I create a lot of pages and too.
Please, you can delete :
- Template:Category handler/numbered
- Template:Category handler/blacklist
- Template:Category handler
And I will relook the doc of the other pages when I will have a little time. Thanks. Bye. --Karima Rafes 18:02, 14 November 2011 (UTC)
Identification
You did? Was it to me? If so, I've long since deleted the email, and I apologize profusely. If it was to someone else, the same applies - we destroy those fairly immediately, per our policy, so it would be gone. If you'd like to be added, I'm more than happy to do so, I'll just need you to send me the stuff to secure-infowikimedia.org. Philippe (WMF) 19:35, 16 November 2011 (UTC)
- Oh, that fax is long since destroyed then. :( If you'd like me to add you, just send me the stuff. Sorry I can't just do it, but we don't keep the data and I don't want to swear to someone's identity when I haven't personally seen the info. Philippe (WMF) 22:22, 16 November 2011 (UTC)
Discussion from Wikimedia Forum
Hi Ottava, you asked a reasonable question in a discussion that I'm otherwise done with on the forum. So I thought I'd address it here. If I can paraphrase (and please correct me if I'm missing something), you feel it's important for the community to have a sense of how WMF is spending money on travel.
I don't think you'll find any disagreement on the general principle that WMF's spending should be transparent and subject to review and critique. WMF is pretty strongly dedicated to those principles; I think that is well demonstrated by its sponsorship of a uniquely inclusive and extensive strategic planning process, and the level of financial reporting voluntarily published on the WMF web site.
However, there is a vast gulf between the kind of accountability inherent in overall spending by functional area (not to mention via board elections etc.), and questions to individual staff members about their individual activities. If you, or anyone else, wants to have a discussion about the general approach to travel funding, I'm confident there are people who would gladly engage in good faith generative discussions about it. They have in the past, and I'm sure they will in the future. But those people will not be arbitrary, individual staff members talking about the travel associated with their own job; and also, the quality of the response will probably have something to do with whether the person asking questions has bothered to read and absorb the already-published documents, and acknowledge the thinking that has already gone into such decisions. -Pete F 22:43, 21 November 2011 (UTC)
ID to foundation
Have you proved your identity to the foundation. I have already did and you should do so for early when applying for special permissions. --Mohamed Aden Ighe 02:28, 22 November 2011 (UTC)
Back and forth
As you have more experience than others, may I just remember you that back-and-forth's such as the one you're engaging in here have already been considered of little help in the past? And I don't mean anything more than that, so no need to reply. Nemo 16:08, 13 February 2012 (UTC)
- You are quite right. Having to argue that experience users are given more weight is kinda pointless because it is commonsense. Ottava Rima (talk) 16:11, 13 February 2012 (UTC)

How to translate?
I have translated Estonian Meta Main Page couple of times, but now I got error message, when trying to translate Template:Main Page/WM News. This template is under protection, because it is used on Main Page. How to translate WM News?

Hola Ottava Rima
Felicidades.

Re:
The blocked user made (again) attack based on his personal view and this is not of course acceptable on this wiki. Should he clarify and or address this via mail, which is of course permitted, I'll be reconsidering the block. You should already know that I am quite present on this project and that I do not tolerate such behavior. Thank you, M/ (talk) 21:02, 24 May 2014 (UTC)
I'd also like to add a couple of things: impetuosity in coming to the defense of someone makes actions even more unnatural; your opinion about my own reconfirmation will be easily balanced with the much worse racist and biased attack that cause the block and you seem to be defending (and possibly subscribe?) today. --M/ (talk) 21:11, 24 May 2014 (UTC)
- "Redeem myself"? Whenever I need a spiritual and/or psychological advice I hope I could find better sources that problematic users, banned multiple times from several projects. Thank you for your efforts, anyway. Everything is logged, and external solicitations are really something that "veteran users" are able to see and weight appropriately. --M/ (talk) 14:01, 25 May 2014 (UTC)

- Ottava has explained the absurdity of your false accusation of racism, which you repeat here. Surely, you can try to address Ottava's points, which are written in elegant English, instead of repeating false accusations, ....

Superprotect letter update
Hi Ottava Rima,
Along with more hundreds of others, you recently signed Letter to Wikimedia Foundation: Superprotect and Media Viewer, which I wrote.
Today, we have 562 signatures here on Meta, and another 61 on change.org, for a total of 623 signatures. Volunteers have fully translated it into 16 languages, and begun other translations. This far exceeds my most optimistic hopes about how many might sign the letter -- I would have been pleased to gain 200 siguatures -- but new signatures continue to come.
I believe this is a significant moment for Wikimedia and Wikipedia. Very rarely have I seen large numbers of people from multiple language and project communities speak with a unified voice. As I understand it, we are unified in a desire for the Wikimedia Foundation to respect -- in actions, in addition to words -- the will of the community who has built the Wikimedia projects for the benefit of all humanity. I strongly believe it is possible to innovate and improve our software tools, together with the Wikimedia Foundation. But substantial changes are necessary in order for us to work together smoothly and productively. I believe this letter identifies important actions that will strongly support those changes.
Have you been discussing these issues in your local community? If so, I think we would all appreciate an update (on the letter's talk page) about how those discussions have gone, and what people are saying. If not, please be bold and start a discussoin on your Village Pump, or in any other venue your project uses -- and then leave a summary of what kind of response you get on the letter's talk page.
Finally, what do you think is the right time, and the right way, to deliver this letter? We could set a date, or establish a threshold of signatures. I have some ideas, but am open to suggestions.
Thank you for your engagement on this issue, and please stay in touch. -Pete F (talk) 18:11, 26 August 2014 (UTC)
Comment suppressed
A comment that you made in a debate has been suppressed. Please keep your comments to the topic, and not make personal attacks in a debate. If you concerns about the credentials of contributors, you are well aware of the means to address such to WMF. — billinghurst sDrewth 12:27, 14 December 2014 (UTC)
- Oh, I already did. The user has a long track record in the topic and came to it with a complete bias. Sj has some of a very long list of problematic entries by that individual. Those with conflicts of interests need to have their conflicts revealed. There is no rightful ability to remove or suppress that edit - everything he said and did is clear for everyone on Wiki and he was quite proud of what he did. Help with translation
Hello Ottava Rima, I am User:T Cells from the Wikipedia Pages Wanting Photos campaign. I'd like to thank you for your translation support in the 2020 edition. The campaign was a huge success and that would not have been possible without your support. The Wikipedia Pages Wanting Photos 2021 starts on the 1st of July and we need your help with the translation of the campaign page and the central banner text.
