This paper examines some determinants of international migration in Nigeria using annual time series data spanning the period 1991–2011. Using ordinary least square regression method, the results indicate that the level of unemployment, migrants’ remittances and population growth are the key determinants of emigration from Nigeria to other countries, statistically significant at 0.01 level.In a country where unemployment rate is very high, this movement is likely to help in reducing pressures on the labour market. Migrants’ remittances might also help in alleviating poverty within households. Globally, tourism is becoming one of the cornerstones of national economic growth and as a means of poverty alleviation, especially in the tourist attractions in rural areas. This article assesses the levels of utilization of tourism potentials in Zambia, in general, and the Mukuni village in the Southern province in Zambia, in particular, with reference to poverty reduction. The world famous Victoria Falls is situated in the Southern province and therefore this area is the most visited places in Zambia and attracts more tourists throughout the whole year. The paper assesses the eff ects of Land Tenure systems and its relationship with agricultural productivity in Ghana. It discusses the complex nature of the Tenure systems and some of the reforms the country has done over the years and standard of living in the rural communities. In its assessments, this paper extracts information from Cross-Section Data and analyse it by applying Chi-square test to show the relationship between Land Tenure Systems and agriculture productivity. The outcome shows that Land Tenure Systems has a direct infl uence on productivity in Agriculture and can result in poverty and low standard of living among peasant farmers. In view of the problems, the paper discusses the prevalence of the terms, rules and regulations of the land acquisitions process and its repercussions and concludes from the results that Land Tenure Systems is a factor for low productivity in Agribusiness, and makes recommendations for the improvement of the land Tenure Systems to reduce the inherent insecurity.

This paper investigates the impact of exchange rate movement and the nominal interest rate on inflation in Ghana. It also looks at the presence of the Fisher Effect and the International Fisher Effect scenarios. It makes use of an autoregressive distributed lag model and an unrestricted error correction model. Ordinary Least Squares regression methods were also employed to determine the presence of the Fischer Effect and the International Fisher Effect. The results from the study show that in the short run a percentage point increase in the level of depreciation of the Ghana cedi leads to an increase in the rate of inflation by 0.20%. A percentage point increase in the level of nominal interest rates however results in a decrease in inflation by 0.98%. Inflation increases by 1.33% for every percentage point increase in the nominal interest rate in the long run. A major problem confronting the Accra-Tema Metropolitan area of Ghana is the provision of potable water supply. One reason for this occurrence is the inability of Ghana Water Company Limited to meet the growing demand. This can partly be attributable to the ineffective pricing by the PURC which is below cost recovery levels. In this study we investigate household's willingness-to-pay (WTP) for potable water supply together with the factors that determine WTP by using the Contingent Valuation Method (CVM). The results indicate that households in the Accra-Tema metropolis are willing to pay on the average GH¢0.10 for a bucket (17.5 litres) of water which is about 7 times more than what they are paying currently. Analysis of the factors that influence households WTP indicates that income, time spent to fetch water from existing sources, level of education, sanitation facility, perceived quality of current water supply, sex of the respondent and marital status are the main factors influencing households WTP for potable water supply services in the metropolis. We recommend that government improve water supply and increase tariffs since people are prepared to pay more for potable water supply as well as reduce inefficiencies that exist in the sector.

This paper investigates the impact of the new oil sector on the economic performance of major traditional sectors of the Ghanaian economy. The discovery of resource booming sectors in most countries o en comes with several opportunities as well as challenges. Ghana discovered oil in 2007 and started subsequent commercial production and export in 2010. The results from the study show that, there is no clear case of declining performance of sectors in terms of output, growth and export earnings as a result of the oil production. The study could also not establish a sustained appreciation in the real eff ective exchange rate since commercial oil production commenced which is an indicator of the presence of the Dutch Disease phenomenon. The real eff ective exchange rate was also found to be highly infl uenced by oil production, oil prices, total exports and remittances. The study applied an autoregressive distributed lag model due to diff erences in the level of integration of variables. The data was obtained from the Bank of Ghana, the Ministry of Finance in Ghana and the Energy Information Administration.

This paper is focused on the modelling and simulating the development of the price of cocoa beans on the world market. The developed models were based on the dependence of the level of the world price of cocoa beans on the world stock to grindings ratio of the beans in the last crop year. The ICCO databases from 1960/1961 to 2005/2006 crop years were used for the estimation of the parameters in the investigated forms of the price model. The linear and logarithmic-linear categories of the price models were studied in this paper. Within the linear forms of the price models; the single linear construction and the linear construction with dummy time variable were specifi ed and tested. Within the logarithmic-linear category of the price models; the error correction model and autoregressive model were examined. From the point of view of statistical verifi cation and from the low value of deviation of the simulated world price of cocoa beans for the 2005/2006 period from the actual price level of price for this crop period, the logarithmic-linear form of model with the error correction achieved the best results. Acceptable results were also obtained by means of the modifi ed price model with the error correction component. By using the logarithmic-linear form of error correction model, the world price of the cocoa beans for the crop period 2006/2007 will achieve the following value 1047 SDR • t −1. Under the modifi ed error correction model, the level of the world price will be 1050 SDR • t −1 .

Purpose The much-trumpeted Green Climate Fund and several other official financial mechanisms for financing adaptation to climate change under the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change have fallen short in meeting adaptation needs. Many poorer people are still grappling with the scourge of climate change impacts. Consequently, there has been a dominant research focus on climate change financing emanating from official development assistance (ODA), Adaptation Fund, public expenditure and private sector support. However, there has been little attempt to examine how migrants’ remittances can close adaptation financing gaps at the local level, ostensibly creating a large research gap. The aim of this paper is to analyze the prospects of eco‑efficiency approach as a more sustainable means of production in the industry, leading towards the sustainable development agenda of the country. Governments globally are leveraging information and communication technology (ICT) growth towards improving the quality of public procurement services for socioeconomic development. However, the extent of its application differs across nations. Notwithstanding the extant theoretical and empirical literature on IT for development, knowledge on how to assess readiness for adopting a full e-procurement system in the public sector of lower and lower-middle income countries (LMICs) begs for understanding. With the narrative of Ghana, we address this gap by drawing on the institutional and economic theory and the United Nations E-Government Development Index towards a holistic framework beyond the dyad of linear website functionalities and internet focus of prior e-government adoption models. Elite interviews gathered from multiple cases from Ghana's public sector reveals the key readiness determinants for a full public sector e-procurement system. This study has significant implications for shaping the process-oriented management of government e-procurement projects towards socioeconomic development in LMICs amid their complex institutional and socio-technical environments.

Charcoal and firewood fuel biomass utilization is thought to be the main cause of deforestation in Uganda. Moreover, the practice of utilizing charcoal and wood fuel in Uganda is said to impact the health of many women and children in the region. The goal of this study was to comprehensively analyze charcoal and wood fuel utilization processes in Uganda and sub-Saharan Africa and the environmental and socioeconomic dynamics and implications. The study equally intended to model out some possible improvements to wood fuel use while conserving natural forests. Both qualitative and qualitative approaches were used to study the charcoal and wood fuel energy situation in Uganda. The study collected field data (sample size: 199) which was subjected to descriptive analysis. The findings show that over 90% of households in Uganda and the sub- Saharan region use firewood and charcoal wood fuel, and that this fuel use creates social and environmental hazards. The Atiwa forest reserve of Ghana sits upon roughly 150 million tons of bauxite. The Government has decided to mine and use the proceeds for national infrastructure development programs. This article examines the impact of mining on the residents’ livelihoods and the achievement of the SDGs from the perspective of the residents. A questionnaire was administered to 197 respondents. Per the findings, the residents around the forest reserve do not consent to the proposed mining project. Although they give credit to its possible job creation opportunities, the irreplaceable nature of the forest reserve urges them not to consent to the initiative. They depend on the rivers and streams for their livelihoods, and the affected districts are also among Ghana’s major cocoa producers. These farmers depend on these water bodies for irrigation. It is necessary to preserve them in order to sustain the production of these cash crops that make a direct contribution to the country’s GDP.

This article analyses cocoa production in Ghana from 1990 to 2011, using Johansen cointegration and OLS regression approaches. The results of the cointegration test show a long run equilibrium relationship between cocoa bean production, area harvested, the world price, cocoa export and RGDPK, all the variables were statistically significant. More so, the results from the OLS linear regression show a positive relationship between annual cocoa output and area harvested as well as export and RGDPK in Ghana. However, on the contrary, the results show a negative relationship between cocoa bean production and the world price. Arguably, this partly because the Ghanaian government has fixed the price of cocoa in order to protect farmers/growers from the shocks on the world market. Across all the Bretton Wood institutions, decentralization has been touted as a fulcrum of good governance. This idea has had a sweeping effect across many areas of governance including climate change adaptation. However, the emerging climate change policy literature have had less focus on how decentralization can enhance adaptation governance at the local level. In Ghana, local governments have been given adaptation responsibility, through recently passed national climate change policies (NCCPs). This chapter of the book draws on experiences from the implementation of the NCCPs at the district level in Ghana which is perceived as a luminary of decentralization in Sub-Saharan Africa. The chapter specifically assesses the extent to which decentralization of NCCPs has impacted adaptation governance at the local level. The chapter therefore aims at fostering understanding of the nuances of implementing decentralized adaptation governance in developing countries among scholars and policy practitioners. It concludes that though decentralized adaptation governance in Ghana increases the institutional space for community participation in adaptation governance it is falling far short of creating a the management regime capable of building requisite adaptive capacity as envisage by the NCCPs at the local level. Although it is extremely premature to draw reliable conclusions, the chapter identified some positive trends amidst challenges.

By the end of 2006, findings in the Lake Albert region of Uganda recommended that entire oil reserves in the block would add up to 2.5 billion barrels. This would mark the Albertine Graben one of the biggest onshore oil fields in Africa and would guarantee the potential to convert Uganda's agriculture-based economy. However, the governance of this resource faces numerous challenges. The aim of this research is to get a clear overview of these challenges considering the citizen perspective, since they are affected by the process of oil exploitation.
