Nonetheless, several authors highlight the urgent need to further carry out research concerning these structures’ operation models by involving end users, since knowledge related to this phenomenon remains scant. This study sets out to convey the third phase of a broader research and development project following a design science research methodology. Ultimately, this contributes to the field by proposing a new virtual business incubator model with immediate practical applicability. This model was cocreated and validated with 23 incubator managers and startup founders from 15 business incubation centers during focus group sessions and organized into 8 dimensions concluded as fundamental ...

Business incubators have been highlighted as vital contributors and value-creation organizations ... more Business incubators have been highlighted as vital contributors and value-creation organizations to entrepreneurs during their venture developments by offering them multiple resources and specialized support. Notwithstanding, several authors call attention to the significant literature gap concerning research focusing on entrepreneurs’ daily lived incubation experiences to understand their perspectives on incubators. This study aims to explore which aspects are perceived as creating value or limiting the venture development of 16 founders of technology-based startups by interviewing them. Ultimately, it contributes valuable insights about incubation factors that enhance or hinder their overall incubation experience. It suggests that entrepreneurs consider intangible resources and social and relational aspects as the most enriching dimensions of their incubation experiences and concludes with the services they consider to be more important. Moreover, it also reveals negative aspects ...

However, despite their crucial roles, previous literature emphasizes that research concerning their business models has been largely ignored, and several important issues are still unaddressed. This article aims to contribute to filling this gap and advancing this field by providing the first bibliometric and systematic literature review, as far as the authors know, concerning virtual business incubator models. The main results reveal the following: that academic production is relatively new, fragmented, and develops under a diversity of research paths; the analyzed models (n = 12) have only some dimensions in common and are proposed based on three different perspectives (business organization and management, information and communication systems, and user experience); ...

In the healthcare domain, maturity models have also been used to address a wide variety of challenges, complexities and the high demand for hospital IS (HIS) implementations. The present paper describes a research project focused on the development of a comprehensive maturity model applied in the HIS context. The outcome of this research is the HIS maturity model (hereafter referred to as HISMM), which includes six stages of HIS growth and maturity progression. The HISMM has the peculiarity of congregating a set of key maturity-influencing factors and respective characteristics, enabling not only the assessment of the global maturity of a HIS, but also the individual maturity of its different dimensions.

These instruments are used also in hospitals. The objective of this article is to identify and compare the maturity models for management of information systems and technologies (IST) in healthcare. For each maturity model, it is identified the methodology of development and validation, as well as the scope, stages and their characteristics by dimensions or influence factors. This study resulted in the need to develop a maturity model based on a holistic approach. It will include a comprehensive set of influencing factors to reach all areas and subsystems of health care organizations.

Future transformation in care will be enabled by data and consequently by knowledge. This paper describes a knowledge management and data science research project and its results based on a study applied to the perioperative department at Hospital Dr. Nelio Mendonca between 2013 and 2015. Conservative practices, such as manual registry, are limited in their scope for preoperative, intraoperative and postoperative decision making, discovery, extent and complexity of data, analytical techniques, and translation or integration of knowledge into patient care. This study contributed to the perioperative decision making process improvement by integrating data science tools on the perioperative electronic system (PES) assembled. Before the PES implementation only 1,2% of the nurses registered the preoperative visit and after 87,6% registered it. Regarding the patient features it was ...

In order to evaluate the HEIs’ information systems, we propose the development of a maturity model capable of supporting the role of HEI’s managers, as well as accreditation agencies, in the assessment of the maturity of these systems, thus, promoting continuous improvement. In this paper, we present and discuss our proposal for an architecture of the maturity model being developed. This one is based on a two-dimensional architecture composed of vertical and horizontal dimensions. We selected a multi-case study approach, based on five Portuguese HEIs, and reviewed the literature to identify the dimensions. This case study was supported by interviews with experts from the selected HEI. The results of this research work were both encouraging and promising amongst the interviewed experts, revealing a high level of acceptance of the general model architecture, as well as positive expectations about its usefulness in the future. The development of our maturity model is carried out by following a formal methodology specially designed to support the construction of this type of model.

Knowing that student success in school substantially depends on the interpersonal supervising of the family, school, and community, access problems make it difficult to be aware of student progress in a timely manner. These limitations were the primary motivator for the initial research and the project presented here – Automation of Individual Student Process accessible through cloud computing – proved to be highly efficient with respect to the quality of the communication between stakeholders, and in diminishing bureaucracy in educational transitions inside and out Portugal.

To maximize quality and value, perioperative care is changing through new technological developments. In this context, knowledge management practices will enable future transformation and enhancements in healthcare services. By performing a data science and knowledge management research in the perioperative department at Hospital Dr. Nélio Mendonça between 2013 and 2015, this paper describes its principal results. This study showed perioperative decision-making improvement by integrating data science tools on the perioperative electronic system (PES). Before the PES implementation only 1,2% of the nurses registered the preoperative visit and after 87,6% registered it. Regarding the patient features it was possible to assess anxiety and pain levels. A future conceptual model for perioperative decision support systems grounded on data science should be considered as a knowledge management tool.

The HISMM has the peculiarity of combining a set of key maturity influence factors and their respective characteristics, enabling not only the assessment of the global maturity of an HIS but also of the individual maturities of its various dimensions. In this article, we present a methodology for the application and implementation of this model in HIS, thus contributing to its widespread practical application and acceptance.

It was also noted that not always the interested parties had access to the information required. This, obviously, was one of the reasons that motivated the investigation related to student’s academic registration process course throughout compulsory education, in Portuguese and foreign schools. The idea, here presented and discussed — automation of Individual Student Process accessible through cloud computing — has clearly become essential to ease the consultation of this registry, simplifying the information circulation among all participants (schools, students, parents, teachers and institutions) simultaneously reducing bureaucracy in educational transitions inside and outside Portugal.

The EB appears to meet the growing collaboration needs between school and family and promote the teaching-learning process and educational success, supported by information and communication technologies. We sought to identify through a questionnaire the perceptions of teachers and guardians regarding the adoption of EB. Both groups stressed the importance of communication between school and family and expressed interest in the EB as a communication tool.
