ABSTRACT Single crystals of the potassium salt (K5, H3O)[SiV3W9O40H]·xH2O of the vanadium tri-sub... more ABSTRACT Single crystals of the potassium salt (K5, H3O)[SiV3W9O40H]·xH2O of the vanadium tri-substituted α-Keggin dodecatungstosilicate were prepared and analyzed by vibrational, EPR and 51V NMR spectroscopy. Varying the synthesis conditions allows crystallization of partially reduced anions. The crystal structure was determined for both oxidized (V5+) and partially reduced (V4+/5+) potassium salts. Single crystal X-ray diffraction data and solid state 51V-NMR spectra confirm the occurrence of a single vanadium site in a cubic structure due to rotational disorder of the Keggin ion. Partially reduced compounds crystallize within the same structure as fully oxidized ones. EPR experiments confirm strong interaction of V4+ with two V5+ ions, in accordance with insertion of a V3 subunit into the lacunary Keggin ion as designed in the synthesis method. The 3D-edifice is composed of K+/H2O counter-sublattice with evidence of tunable water occupancy.

Membrane separation technology has been recently attracted more attention as an option for gas se... more Membrane separation technology has been recently attracted more attention as an option for gas separations due to its compact system, ease of operation and low power consumption. In this study, polymer membranes with different percentages of polyurethane were synthesized and submitted to permeability and selectivity tests for the following gases, CO2, N2, O2 and CH4, at two pressures of 4 and 8 bar and at room temperature. The membranes were characterized by FTIR-ATR, Scanning electron microscope (SEM), Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and X-ray diffractometer (XRD). At low pressure of 4 bar and room temperature, the membrane with low percentage of PU, 10 %, presented the higher selectivity to CO2 in relation to both N2 and CH4. The same behavior was observed at a high pressure of 8 bar, with higher selectivity to CO2 in relation to all studied gases, N2, O2 and CH4, compared to the already analogous reported membranes submitted at greater pressures.

Hydrotalcites, also called layered double hydroxides (LDHs), present some characteristics that are very interesting for CO2 capture, including their speed to achieve equilibrium and their high regeneration. These compounds can be represented by the general formula [M1-x2+Mx3+(OH)2]x+ [(An-)x/n.yH2O]x, where M2+ and M3+ are divalent metals and trivalent cations, respectively, and An- is an anion of valency n which occupies the interlayer region, and maintains electrical neutrality of these materials. Single crystals of the potassium salt K3(H2O)4[H2SiVW11O40](H2O)8+x of the vanadium monosubstitut... more Single crystals of the potassium salt K3(H2O)4[H2SiVW11O40](H2O)8+x of the vanadium monosubstituted alpha-Keggin dodecatunsgstosilicate were grown from an aqueous solution and analyzed by EDS, XRD, vibration and electronic spectroscopy, and 1H, 51V, and 29Si solid-state NMR spectroscopy. Results indicate the formation of a nanoporous-like compound of hexagonal symmetry (space group P62) with large, water-filled channels running along the c axis. A uniform distribution of vanadium over the 12 metal sites of the alpha-Keggin anion is observed by XRD. Two different neighborhoods were characterized by 51V NMR in a 2:1 ratio (deltaiso=-546.3 and -536.2 ppm), in accordance with a difference in the number of potassium ions in the second coordination shell of vanadium.

At the university level, the general discipline of chemistry can be considered as a discipline th... more At the university level, the general discipline of chemistry can be considered as a discipline that helps the understanding of science itself. This study describes teaching work in this discipline using regular software for orbital calculations. This software is a useful tool to understand the molecular world by retrieving and analyzing data. We calculate molecular orbitals of two molecules and / or diatomic ions. The two molecules were one homonuclear and one heteronuclear, such as: O2 and HF; O2 + and HCl, N2 and HBr, F2 and HI; Cℓ2 and NO; Br2 and CN-. The students who participated in this work were in the general chemistry classes of the School of Chemistry of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro in the first semester of 2017. The professor explained the bases of the model and showed the program to raise possibilities, implement models, analyze and interpret of results. This work has generated much more meaningful learning.

The mixed Keggin polyoxometalate salts K 4(α-SiW 12 O40 ), K 8(α-SiW 11 O39 ), K 5(α- SiW 11 VO 4... more The mixed Keggin polyoxometalate salts K 4(α-SiW 12 O40 ), K 8(α-SiW 11 O39 ), K 5(α- SiW 11 VO 40 ).xH 2O, K 5(α-SiW 11 NbO 40 ).xH 2O, Na 10 (α-SiW 9O34 ), K 7(α-SiW 9V3O40 ).xH 2O and K 7(α- SiW 9Nb 3O40 ).xH 2O have been prepared from aqueous solutions of the stable deficient anions ( α- SiW 11 O39 ) 8- and ( α-SiW 9O34 ) 10- . The compounds have been analyzed by 51 V and 27 Si MAS NMR. A small distortion was observed at the Si site with tetrahedral coordination after substitution of one or more tungsten atoms by vanadium or niobium in ( α-SiW 12 O40 ) 4- . 51 V MAS NMR spectra of ( α- SiW 9V3O40 ) 7- showed three peaks at -440.2, -492.1 and -532.7 ppm suggesting three different sites in the compound. For ( α-SiW 11 VO 40 ) 5- , the 51 V MAS NMR spectra displayed one peak at -536.2 ppm confirming the presence of a single site. 51 V static spectra of ( α-SiW 9V3O40 ) 7- and ( α-SiW 11 VO 40 ) 5- provided anisotropy tensor components characteristic of vanadium in axially distorted...

Anthropocene is discussed in this article in the point of view of chemical CO2 capture, use and c... more Anthropocene is discussed in this article in the point of view of chemical CO2 capture, use and conversion. The processes and technologies of carbon capture are presented as well as some of the several ways of using or converting it into other chemicals. The technologies of precombustion, poscombustion, oxycombustion and chemical looping were discussed. The materials used for CO2 capture, including amines, solid adsorbents such as charcoal, zeolites, metal organic frameworks, double layer hydroxides and membranes, were briefly presented. The major direct industrial uses of CO2 were discussed for the obtention of key chemicals, such as urea, methanol, cyclic carbonates and carboxylic acids. Some routes were selected to be discussed in more detail, showing the better catalysts and processes in use or research. The comparison between capture and storage and capture and use is not so easy as it may be regarded initially because it depends on the process, technologies, raw materials, obtained products and the analysis of a careful up-todate life cycle (for the present market) of each process and route, which is already not available.
