It is a Holistic system having answers for all the challenges of the Medical field. Siddha Medicine which can be synonymised as Hindu medicine contains not only preparation of medicines but also has ethical perspectives of day to day life style and rituals to be followed. This paper tries to highlight such life style ethics which are hardly being followed now and even unknown to our younger generations. While reviewing the traditional Siddha literatures, the Authors’ came across such ethical practices which they try to explain scientifically, such as consuming Tulasi (holy basil - relieves cough, asthma), intake of Neem leaves and its role behind the treatment of Chicken pox (Anti-bacterial, Anti-viral), eating in Banana leaves (rich in poly phenols, EGCG – Epi Gallo Catechin Gallate), usage of Thamboolam (conventional betel chewing), religious and medicinal importance of Bael leaves and the role of Sesban leaves in Hindu traditions. Apart from the above said ethical practices the Author’s have also tried to give scientific explanations for ethical traditions such as Thoppu karanam (the ritual being followed in the Hindu temples to worship lord “Ganesha” which stimulates the neural pathway in the brain), wearing Rudhraksha , importance of applying Turmeric to the body and Tilak to the forehead. Finally strong conclusions can be arrived that the ethical practices followed in the Hindu Traditions and documented in the Siddha literatures have strong scientific reasons behind them.

Even today, especially in Rural areas, people remove their foot-wear when entering into a Physician’s room – a habit they follow when entering into their place of Worship. But in recent years, there are reports where Physicians are blamed, booked under Consumer act etc. Again, India is said to have one of the most corrupt medical systems in the world. The situation has become so bad that patients today approach the doctor with mixed feelings of questions regarding their efficacy & success rate, faith and fear, of hope and hostility. This leads to a distorted doctor-patient relationship, with high chances of exploitation both ways - doctors may fleece patients and, if some faults are exposed in treatment, patients or their relatives may blackmail doctors. In order to regain and experience the lost Integrity, we have put forth...

Ka... more Siddha medicine serves both Therapeutic and Prophylatic concepts and hence Holistic in nature. Kaya karpam, a special branch of this medical system is a science of rejuvenation, longevity, and spiritual wellbeing. Concept of Kaya Karpam was breifly explained by saint Thirumoolar in his text Thirumanthiram [1]. The word Kaya & Karpam denotes the meaning of Prevention of body from diseases. Nowadays, this can be correlated with the Anti-Oxidant concept. It deals with the Prevention of Narai (Whitening of hairs), Thirai (shrinkening of Skin), Moopu (aging) and Saakadu (Death) [2]. Kaya kalpa drugs have proven scientific evidences to prevent and manage the Non communicable diseases like Diabetes mellitus, Obesity and also Chronic deliberating diseases like cancer etc. In that way, our test drug ‘Aswathy Chooranam’ also comes under the division ‘Kaya karpam’. It is a poly herbal formulation containing about eleven herbal Ingredients indicated for the prevention of Non communicable diseases [3]. So the Authors’ of this paper decided to evaluate the In vitro Anti-oxidant activity of the test drug through DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl), Nitric Oxide Scavenging, Total Antioxidant activities and the results show significant free radical scavenging properties.

Its reliability lies in the fact that it is time-tested, devoid of any drastic adverse effects and deep-rooted in the culture and heritage of India. The role of this system in treating chronic diseases is being widely felt now-a-days. The challenges in treating such conditions with the currently available drugs (Non-Steroidal Anti-inflammatory Drugs – NSAID) often results in gastric irritation, renal damage, dependence etc. Traditional Siddha medicines offer a wide range of Anti-inflammatory drugs which are poly herbal in nature and devoid of the above said side-effects. This paper deals with Anti-inflammatory screening of such a medicine ‘Ashwathi chooranam’ documented in Classic Siddha text “Agathiar Vaithiya Kaaviyam” indicated for arthritis. Withania somnifera (Ashwagandha) is widely used in Siddha medicine. It is a main ingredient in many formulations prescribed for a variety of musculoskeletal conditions (e.g., arthri...
