Roberto Petriaggi
A short biography:
Roberto Petriaggi is an Italian Underwater Archaeologist. From 1978 to 2010 he worked at the Ministry of Heritage and Cultural Activities. He has served at various Italian archaeological Superintendencies and at the Underwater Archaeology Technical Service (STAS, 1989- 1996), where he has accomplished about 100 operational mission in various Italian sites; moreover, he got professional recognition as an Underwater Archaeologist by decree of the Minister of Culture 1992, September 11. From 1987 to 1996 he was also Director of the Underwater Archaeological
Operation Unit of the Superintendence of Ostia and Director of the Museum of the Roman Ships at Fiumicino; then, in 1996-1997, he directed the Underwater Archaeological Operation Unit of the Superintendence of Etruria Meridionale (Southern Etruria). He led underwater archaeological
campaigns abroad, particularly in Yemen, Oman and Libya (1996-2010). In 1997 he created the Underwater Archaeological Operations Unit (NIAS) at the Institute for the Conservation and Restoration (ISCR, formerly ICR), which he directed until his retirement (2011). He has been also Professor at the “School of Higher Education for the Teaching of Restoration” of ISCR and he directed restoration works of major masterpieces, among which the bronze statue of Dancing Satyr of Mazara del Vallo (1999-2003). He was also adjunct professor of “Underwater Archaeology” at the Roma Tre University from 1999 to 2009. From 2001 to 2010 he was Planner and Director of the “Restoring Underwater Project” aimed at the in-situ conservation, protection and restoration of submerged archaeological structures. The Baiae Underwater Archaeological Park – Naples - is one of the main archaeological sites covered by the interventions of the Project. In 1999-2010, he was consultant for the restoration of the Roman ships of Pisa San Rossore and Member of the Ministerial Committee for the study of conservative methods of waterlogged archaeological wood (2003-2006). He’s the Autor of several papers and monographies and he is also the Editor
of “Archaeologia Maritima Mediterranea – An International Journal on Underwater Archaeology”. Today he continues his activity as a consultant for the “ISCR Restoring Underwater Project” and, moreover, he conducts courses and conferences for Universities and Cultural Institutes, and other dissemination activities, including audio-visual ones.
