Thus, the processes of globalisation, which on the one hand allow diversification of international activities of the enterprise, at the same time contribute to the transmission of economic shocks. The authors attempt to provide an initial answer to the research question of how Polish firms conducting export activities with various degrees of advancement perceive the impact of the pandemic crisis, as well as their reactions to this crisis. The article presents the results of quantitative research conducted in June 2022 among 120 Polish companies from the manufacturing sector.

Research methodology – The study uses descriptive statistics based on a quantitative survey of 120 Polish exporters from manufacturing sectors. Score – The authors have found some evidence which partly contradicts previous expectations that firms with stronger previous involvement in internationalisation are more likely to sustain or increase their internationalisation commitment during the pandemic and in the post pandemic landscape. Originality / value / implications / recommendations – The authors have explored the boundary conditions under which internationalised firms sustain or extend their internationalisation commitment under pandemic conditions.

In the current paper, a comparative analysis is conducted of IDPs of four Eastern European countries, both members and non-members of the European Union. The purpose of the paper is to determine the effect of economic integration on foreign direct investment (FDI) flows and on the movement of these Eastern European economies through their IDP stages.

The objective of this paper is to review extant research on export performance and propose a research framework which will go beyond the currently studied relationships and variables, and therefore formulate several recommendations for future research. Research Design & Methods: In doing so, the review adopts a broader view of export performance, which accounts for the possibility of a negative development of export ventures. Findings: The paper finds that institution-based, resource-based and industry-based views have been often used to address the determinants of export performance. While there are some complex interactions between hostcountry institutional factors, firm-level factors, and industry-level factors, these have been studied to a lesser extent. Also, the review highlights the need for a more nuanced and fine-grained understanding of export strategy, particularly embracing modern business models and devoting more attention to foreign market partners. Implications & Recommendations: Scholars should be more sensitive to previously neglected variables which can enhance the understanding of export performance and lead to more comprehensive empirical studies. Contribution & Value Added: The paper includes a conceptual framework proposing directions for future research, whereby a broader understanding of export performance is adopted, including also the possibility of export exits. Article type: research article

Methodology: The paper draws on two process perspectives in management research to refine the understanding of de-internationalisation process and provide a contribution to this still under-researched area. Contrary to many reviews of international management literature, the paper adopts a deductive analytical approach by applying theory-driven process perspectives to diagnose extant research, identify key developments and research gaps. Findings: In particular, decision-making processes still require a deeper exploration. The review provides a synthesis of extant knowledge on the antecedents, patterns and outcomes of de-internationalisation processes, which is of particular Value Added: By applying two different process approaches known from strategic management res...

In order to implement these objectives, we draw from the institution-based view of international business with regard to the characteristics of export markets and to the concept of legitimacy in foreign markets. We complement this logic by building on the organizational learning theory in order to discuss the applicability and limitations of using context-specific experience. Finally, we also corroborate the relevance of strategy adaptation for export exit, nuancing its effect depending on prior experience.

Research Design & Methods: Our article uses panel regression models on a dataset of 97 Polish listed "new" MNEs with foreign activities established in the period of 2006-2013, gathered in a primary study. Findings: We found that Polish firms show an inverted U-curve relationship between multinationality and performance, which is contrary to the predictions resulting from the traditional S-curve analysis. Moreover, we found that political-institutional motives positively moderate the multinationality-performance curve for sales growth, while efficiency-seeking motives have a similar effect on return on assets and return on sales. Finally, competitiveness-related motivations behind internationalisation moderate the inverted U-shaped curve for return on equity, although they are different than expected. Implications & Recommendations: The article addresses the gap of limited consideration for the stage of internationalisation of the firms under study by focusing on early-stage ("new") MNEs. Secondly, as one of the very few studies, our work follows some recent calls to unbundle the substance of internationalisation by considering the moderating role of internationalisation motives.

Research background: Research on the performance outcomes of different forms of internationalisat... more Research background: Research on the performance outcomes of different forms of internationalisation has attracted significant attention due to its theoretical and practical relevance. Still, the related findings have remained conflicting. Scholars have argued that companies need to possess or acquire firm-specific advantages (FSAs) to succeed internationalisation. However, a significant part of International Business (IB) research has treated FSAs as enablers of internationalisation, while some have argued that internationalisation in itself only helps firms translate the possessed resources into performance. Purpose of the article: The objective of this study, which is based on the resource-based view (RBV), is to explore the moderating effect of internationalisation on the relationship between FSAs and performance, considering internationalisation degree and firm size as boundary conditions for that relationship. Methods: We carry out statistical analyses on a longitudinal dataset containing 304 novice internationalisers from the post-transition economy of Poland and a total of 1167 firm-year observations. Thereby, we compare SMEs with large firms.

Design/methodology/approach: The real economy perspective was adopted, whereby basic relationships in terms of the development of FDI flows and transactions worldwide were analyzed. In addition, primary data from a survey of internationally operating Polish firms were analyzed in order to shed additional light on the influence of the pandemic on international economic activity. In addition to formulating observations with regard to general patterns emerging from the data, an attempt has been made to outline the likely theoretical implications of the pandemic for FDI research. Findings: In the short term, there was a significant limitation of FDI, caused mainly by the introduction of lockdowns. In the middle and long run, the current crisis will likely translate into acontinued slowdown in FDI flows. ...
International Business in Times of Crisis: Tribute Volume to Geoffrey Jones, 2022

The pandemic crisis, which fully unfolded worldwide in March 2020, had dramatic consequences for the world population, some of which are of economic character. As some of the global value chains and international trade and investment relationships were destabilized or suspended, a legitimate question arises as to the possible progress of the globalization process. The authors commence with a multidimensional concept of globalization and its critical evaluation. Subsequently, three possible scenarios of pandemic-induced development are identified and explored: disrupted globalization, de-globalization, and finally rebalanced globalization. The discussion of these scenarios also includes implications for economic policy.

The analysis aims at grouping these countries according to features including the level of Corruption Perception Index, time required to start a business, paid taxes, inflow of foreign direct investments, level of KOF Index of Globalization, PKB per capita and the level of Human Development Index. The analysis of time series of mentioned-above indicators in years 2001–2011 was used also in the article.

Specifically, the objective of the study is to evaluate Poland’s current positioning and, hence, stage of development. The paper begins with a brief literature review devoted to the concept of IDP. It is followed by a review of extant research applying the IDP model to CEE economies. Analysis of macroeconomic data indicating Poland’s IDP path follows. The main conclusion is that Poland is at the end of stage 2 of its IDP, i.e. it is behind the position that its GDP level would imply. This is mainly due to the pull of the large internal market, the still weak competitiveness of domestic firms in international markets and the reluctance of government to adopt more active, firm specific ownership advantage stimulating policies towards outward FDI.

Research Design & Methods: The objectives of this qualitative study are pursued in the context of acquired high-tech start-ups in Israel. The study employed semi-structured interviews. The practical model for analysing the transcribed interview responses was based on Shkedi's (2003) method, drawing also from the grounded theory tradition in the process of coding and interpreting data categories. Findings: The results of this research highlight the communication climate (comprising factors such as openness, trust, supportiveness and interest of top managers in the employee's well-being) as a vital behavioural mechanism influencing post-acquisition performance. Also, we found that effective knowledge transfer to the acquired company is one of the essential determinants of success. Implications & Recommendations: M&A require a clear business plan, that which is based on realistic needs. A major fault in many start-ups is focus on technology rather than on strategy. Many start-ups are established and staffed by engineers and scientists who often believe, erroneously, that a good product will sell. Contribution & Value Added: In extant research, most attention has been paid to the acquiring company perspective on success. In contrast, this study focuses on the seller's perspective and contribution to M&A success, instead of on the buyer's perspective. Article type: research paper

The qualitative analysis also considers firm characteristics, prior modes of entry and host-country choices. By using a structured survey, based on an extensive literature review, the authors apply within-case and cross-case approaches to analyse data collected from ten Polish companies. The findings lead to the formulation of seven propositions which may serve as guidelines for future research using larger and more representative samples of Polish outward foreign direct investment.
