Kallion/Kallipolis

After the publication of my doctoral dissertation "The Sealings of the Aetolian Kallipolis" (University of Athens, 1985) I was asked by the Italian Enciclopedia dell'arte antica to write the entry Kallion / Kallipolis,
which is reproduced here from the internet.

The 14th Ephorate of Prehistoric and Classical Antiquities (Lamia) continued in 1983 the work mainly of rescue excavations. Because P.A. Pantos this year dealt extensively with legislative issues of the Archaeological Service and in addition from 1 Νovember 1983 received an educational license abroad, here is the brief summary of the few excavations and researches of 1983, conducted under his direction, which have been published in the Archaeological Deltion (Bulletin) of the Service.
The 14τη Ephorate of Prehistoric and Classical Antiquities (Lamia) in 1982, with a staff of five archaeologists had to deal with a number of rescue excavations, due to the earthquakes of 1980 and the ensuing intense construction activity. Here is presented that part of the research and works of the Ephorate in the modern Prefecture of Phthiotis (ancient lands: Achaia Phthiotis, Malis, Ainis,Oitaia,Opuntian and Epiknamidian Lokris, Metropolis of the Dorians and eastern Phokis), for which the short reports was written by P.A. Pantos.
The paper "Nikolaos Papachatzis as Archaeologist. The Edition of Pausanias" is a translation of my speech ("Ο Νικόλαος Παπαχατζής ως αρχαιολόγος. Η έκδοση του Παυσανία", published also in academia.edu) at a philological commemoration of Nikolaos Papachatzis, organized by the City of Volos (9 May 2003). It describes the contributions of N. Papachatzis in the fields of ancient topography and religion, especially of Thessaly, and his magnum opus, the two editions of Pausanias Ελλάδος περιήγησις.

The report "The Work of the Directorate National Archive of Monuments at the Hellenic Ministry of Culture (1993-2006)" is a translation of «Το έργο της Διευθύνσεως Εθνικού Αρχείου Μνημείων του Υπουργείου Πολιτισμού (1993-2006)» , wich was published in the periodical Ο ΜΕΝΤΩΡ 108(2014)72-79 (Archaeological Society at Athens, ISSN 1105-7181), in the website of the Directorate (see: http://nam.culture.gr/images/deam/doc/to_ergo_ths_DEAM_1993_2006v5.pdf ), as well as in academia.edu (with enriched footnotes).
The paper "IV. Semaines philippopolitaines de l'histoire et de la culture thrace" is the presentation of the reports and communications of this conference, held in Plovdiv, Bulgaria (October 3-17, 1980), on the general theme "The Thracian cultural heritage", but the reports and communications concerned a number also of other issues . However, there was a rather unfortunate attempt at grouping (Thrace and the foreign world / Early Bronze Age / Late Bronze Age and Early Iron Age / Antiquity / Religion and cults / Philippopolis). The two Tables rondes had as subjects "Instruments de travails se rapportant a la Thrace et aux territoires voisins, editions epigraphiques, numismatiques, papyrologiques, linguistiques" the first, "L'heritage culturel thrace au Bas-Empire" the second. P.A.Pantos [*] emphasized the fact that the localization of constantly new sites (settlements, buildings, cemeteries, finds, etc.) to the North of the coastal Greek colonies of Western Thrace shows how early was the Greek penetration in the country and that the low land at least until the the foothills of the Rhodope Mt. during classical times was under the direct control of the coastal cities. Also in the valley of Ebros he placed the city Ζειρηνία in the area of the villages of Dadia, Lykofos, Kornofolia. Finally, it showed the current (1980) state of our knowledge of the topography of the coastal cities.

The 2nd International Congress on Thracology was held in Bucharest (4-10 September 1976) and the acts were published in three volumes in 1980. A critical book-review was published in 1984 by the French epigraphist and archaeologist Yves Grandjean. It is presented in a translation in the ΘΡΑΚΙΚΑ ΧΡΟΝΙΚΑ 40 (1985) 153.

Translator's note (1985)
One of the most important synthetic historical works published in Greece in recent years on ancient Thrace, and on the central theme of the Hellenization of the Thracian tribes, is the book by the historian D.Samsaris ["The Hellenization of Thrace during the Greco-Roman Antiquity"]. This book, which certainly has nothing to do with the various histories of Thrace written by amateur scholars before and after World War II, has not been widely known until today (1985). The book review by the prominent British Professor of Ancient History N.G.L. Hammond (JHS 103 (1983) 215-6) is perhaps the most appropriate presentation of this book to the readers of ΘΡΑΚΙΚΑ ΧΡΟΝΙΚΑ.
"G. Bakalakis – A. Sakellariou, Paradimi, Mainz a. Rh. 1981), BΟΝΝΕR JAHRBÜCHER 183 (1983) 723 – 724 " (Book-review by Colin A. Renfrew, tranlation: Π.Α.
Translator's note (1983):
The book of Prof. George Bakalakis, in collaboration with the archaeologist Agni Sakellariou, on the results of excavation in the prehistoric toumba of Paradim is the only, and most complete, publication of a Neolithic settlement in Greek Thrace. Instead of any other presentation, we thought it more appropriate to quote here a book-review written by an excellent expert on Balkan and Aegean prehistory, by A. Colin Renfrew, Professor of Prehistoric Archeology at the University of Cambridge. This book review was first published in the journal Bonner Jahrbücher 183 (1983) 723-724.
In 1987, a panel of experts from six countries drafted a draft declaration on exports, new acquisitions and antiquities lending, which was finalized in 1988 and published. Here is the Greek translation of the final text, which I published in 1990 in the Newsletter of the Archaeological Society at Athens.
The paper "The 13th International Congress on Classical Archeology and Thrace", published in ΘΡΑΚΙΚΑ ΧΡΟΝΙΚΑ 43 (1989) 202-205, is a presentation of the papers concerning the area of ancient Thrace and made at this congress, held in Berlin (24-30 July 1988). Such communications, which are briefly mentioned in the text, were made by Prof. Al.Fol for the treasure found in Rogozen , Prof. V.Velkov for the Kabyle and M. Cicikova for the Thracian tombs of the Hellenistic era. Cl. Barsanti presented "Archaeological Notes on Roman Byzantium" and M. Dufkova dealt with "Beginnings of Hellenistic coproplastic in the Black Sea region". Summarizing the presence of the Greeks in the Pontic Thrace Dr. M. Ducek described the "Influence of the Greek Black Sea cities on the evolution of Thrace". In the Aegean Thrace was referred only Prof. Afif Erzen's communication about his excavations at Aenos (now Enez).
The paper "The Present Situation of the Studies in Archaeological Topography of Western Thrace" is my report at the Conference "Pulpudeva 4. Semaines philippopolitaines de l'histoire and de la culture thrace", held in Plovdiv, Bulgaria (3-17 October 1980) and published in the proceedings, Sofia 1983, pp.164-178 [Editions de l`Academie Bulgare des Sciences] .
PS. According to later researches and excavations in "Mesembria" - Drys? (see par.30-31) it is now believed to be Zone, the main settlement of Samothracian Peraia, as L.Robert and A.Poimenidis have proposed.
In 2019 the Writers' Center of Magnesia, Thessaly, published an Anthology of Texts of Writers Originating or Living in the Area. This Anthology contains some short excerpts from my doctoral dissertation "The Sealings of the Aetolian city Kallipolis".
The POLEMON project aims to deploy coordinated technology services for the recording, documentation, management and presentation of the cultural heritage, implemented at a national level. This project has addressed the requirements for computerization of the National Archive of Monuments, which is a major priority for the Greek Ministry of Culture. The system is geographically distributed and covers both movable and immovable objects. It supports a range of administrative functions, authority service, map display, images and text, and it has federated database architecture implemented over interconnected local and wide area computer networks. In this paper, the rational behind and basic requirements for the National Archive of Monuments information system are presented its technical characteristics are outlined.

Numerous stolen works of art, which investigators seized in Munich more than 15 years ago, go back to the island state. This has now been decided by a court (Higher Regional Court (OLG) Munich (decision no. AZ 19 U 4878/10).
The frescoes and icons were stolen during the Turkish occupation after the invasion in 1974. They have been stored since the seizure for the most part in the Exhibitroom
of the Bavarian State Criminal Police Office. The news from the periodical Der Spiegel 18.03.2013 (attached).
There is a Cypriot law from 1930 according to which things found on the Cypriot land belong to the state - but the time of discovery is unclear. The political question of whether the 1930 law applies to items stolen in the socalled "Republic of Northern Cyprus" also played a role here. "Northern Cyprus" had been declared
a constituent (sc.afterwards independent) republic by Turkey, but had not been recognized by the international community. The court also had doubts about the legal capacity of the socalled "Republic of Northern Cyprus". It therefore came to the conclusion that the Republic of Cyprus is a unified state structure whose law of 1930 also applies to the northern part.

In 1943 the soldier Karl Faber, who was serving in a Jaeger unit of Wehrmacht, which blew up the Monastery of St. Dionysius in Olympus, had received with his camera aspects of the historic monastery
before the blowing up. In 1993 he sent to the abbot of the monastery a letter with photographs he received before the blowing up. It was a surprise, but these photographs are valuable in the restoration work that is now being carried out in this historic Monastery.
The Sealings of the Aetolian Kallipolis - no 221
Pantos A. Pantos
In this sealing of Kallipolis, the characteristic tower polos, which Athena wears, leads us to the East and especially to Asia Minor. In Roman imperial times, Athena as Polias, is synkretized with the Tyche (Fortuna) of the city in coins. It seems that this sealing comes from a town in the Seleucid East, where the Macedonian Athena Alkis wore on her head this particular Asia Minor turreted polos, which was characteristic for the Tyche (Fortuna) of the various cities. Insect, possible fly, seen from above. Its head is small and from it two antennae are extended. In the ringstones, but also in coins, the ancient Greek engravers often represented insects, and other animals, seen from above, as early as the 5th century BC., while the representations are numerous in the 4th century BC. The subject is, of course, also found in sealings and ringstones, while the minute depiction as device on the shield of a Lakon was mocked according to Plutarch. (Translation. The subject of the eagle holding thunderbolt, not unknown either in coins or in sealings, appeared since the years of Alexander. We have this pattern primarily in the coins of Ptolemies, starting from the reverse of the gold and silver coins of Ptolemy I. Innumerable mints then copy the theme across the Hellenistic world. The plasticity of the present eagle puts it near the coins of Pyrrhos (second quarter of the 3rd c. BC.) (Translation. The history of the oval ("Galatian") shield in Greece is not very well known. However, we have it in monuments, in Eretreia, Delphi, from Marathon in the British Museum, in Tanagra. Outside mainly Greece, we have numerous depictions of oval shields in Pergamon, Miletos, Sidon, Alexandreia. Also on coins from ptolemaic Egypt (it is considered a kind of personal emblem of Ptolemy II Philadelphos), of Pyrrhos, on aes grave in Italy and on coin of kings of Cimmerian Bosporos. In Aetolia itself we can remember the pile of shields (Galatian or Macedonian), on which “Aetolia” sits on the Aetolian coins. (Translation. The position of the griffin with the raised leg is already found in the classical era and it also exists in the 3rd c. BC. The naturalistic rendering of the griffin, like this in the present depiction, begins from the 5th c. BC. with the introduction of the cock-crest. The existence of the inscription [....]ΩΤΑΝ in the present sealing means that it comes from a public seal. Of the well-known cities that used the griffin as their emblem, only in Ambrakia does the suffix [AMBΡAKI]ΩTAN fit. Therefore it is almost certain that it is the public seal of this city. The main feature of this figure of the young Apollo is the headdress, which is a Hellenistic creation. This creation can be traced to monetary types in Asia Minor and in continental Greece.Similar are the representations
of this type of Apollo on ring stones and in sealings.(Translation. Initial Publication in "TA ΣΦΡΑΓΙΣΜΑΤΑ ΤΗΣ ΑΙΤΩΛΙΚΗΣ ΚΑΛΛΙΠΟΛΕΩΣ" (Dissertation, University of Athens, 1984-5, in Greek ).

Athena in the type of Parthenos by Pheidias. The types and variations of the Athena Parthenos by Pheidias, from the 4th cent. BC. onwards, are repeated very often in various coin mintings, sealstones and in the sealings of Kyrene. The rare bronze coin (400-344 BC) of the neighboring to Kallipolis city of Hypate in Aenis, gives us perhaps the solution of the origin the sealing no.219. (Translation. The Amazon raises her right hand and bends it over her head, one would say in a Lykeios` gesture. That we have one of the Amazons of Ephesos is manifest, either the type Sciarra or Mattei. Perhaps the Hellenistic ring-engraver copied in general only the shape of an Amazon of Ephesos, from memory, freely attributing various individual forms.(Translation. The motif of the Cupids riding wild animals is one of the most beloved among the sealstones, and the examples innumerable. Some entirely analogous seal would have inspired in Marcus Argentarius` epigram (Anthologia Palatina IX, 221). Leo and panther are considered Bacchic animals, and cupids on them belong to the circle of worship of Dionysus. (Translation. The figure of Zeus, who is preparing to launch a thunderbolt, appeared in Peloponnesian works of the 6th c. ΒC., and at the same time holds a scepter, is found in a series of classical vases. From the 5th century B.C. the type has a huge spread. The Κallipolis sealing no. 190 despite the archaistic elements there is no doubt that we have in front of us a seal of the 3rd c. ΒC. In Hellenistic times, the mixing of archaistic elements is obvious in the figures of Zeus on a series of coins as well. (Translation. The rider, standing on the back of the horse, raises his right hand, with which he swings obliquely down the javelin. He wears a cuirass, the embossed fringe of which is visible as a line on the abdomen, right armpit and neck. The armored horseman of this seal is certainly a warrior. (Similar motion and muscular horse on glass seals in British Museum and Geneva respectively). These Aetolian cavalry men, outside a squadron, are admired by Polybius (IV, 8, 10). (Translation. Macedonian helmets are most often depicted on coins , seal stones and other monuments . The Macedonian helmet of the sealing no. 114 of Kallipolis, which may belong to a public seal of the 3rd c. BC. , resembles the two helmets, which were found in a tomb in Prodromi, Thesprotia. These ring stones with a representation of a Macedonian helmet could be given to soldiers. It was assumed that the frequent presence of the Macedonian helmet in Macedonian coins suggests that it was the symbol of the main Macedonian mint, perhaps in Pella. But it is also a fact that all the Hellenistic armies, and not only the Macedonian one, have divisions or even mercenaries "armed in the Macedonian way". (Translation. The distinction between Satyr and Silenos is clear in art from the 4th c. BC.: the old, hollow, bearded and bald Silenos has a snub nose and strong ithyphallic form. In seal engraving, the representations of Silenos are several (examples). The Silenos of Kallipolis, like many others, has "Socratic" features. (Translation. The masks of Comedy are most commonly depicted in Hellenistic, "Graeco-Roman" and later seal stones. The variety is quite large and sometimes it is possible to proceed with identifications on the base of descriptions of persons of the New Comedy, given by Pollux (IV,143-155). The masks on the present sealings of Kallipolis depict the «ἡγεμών θεράπων» and the «πρεσβύτης ἡγεμών» . Many are the representations of the New Comedy masks on the seal stones, but also in other monuments (in clay, bronze and stone - examples). In the excavation at Kallion has been discovered the scene of a theater. (Translation. Representation of a snake rolling on a shield. At the top, following the circle of the shield the inscription: [Ε]ΧΙΝΑΙΩ[Ν]. The head of the snake has the form of an arrow tip. Representations of snakes are not unknown in sealstones and coins. In several representations the shield of Achilles bears as an episemon a snake. We have therefore the public seal of Echinos in Achaia Phthiotis, one the cities , which belonged to the Kingdom of Achilles, according to the Homeric tradition. (Translation.
