A central tenet of Participatory Design (PD) is the direct involvement of people in the co-design of things and technologies they use and live with. The theme for Participatory Design Conference 2016 is 'Participatory Design in an Era of Participation'. Over 25 years after the first PDC in 1990, participation and co-creation have become essential features of design and research into technology. Living in an era of participation prompts critical questions around the goals and practices of involving people in diverse aspects of developing, redesigning and using IT. The distribution and promise of information technologies cut across emerging societal challenges at various levels. Sharing economy, crowdfunding and participatory cultures create new forms of engagement that challenge traditional ideas of participation. Public engagement in radical social innovation is used to address shrinking finances to public services, which has resulted in citizen-involving projects and labs in various domains. Maker technologies, notions of hacking and shared data, are promoting civic engagement with technology innovation that changes the material and socio-economic contexts of production. At the same time, centralization of the Internet, big data and large-scale infrastructuring challenge the core democratic ideals of PD.

To do so, the authors investigate Latour's discussion uncertainties in relation to social processes: the nature of actors, actions, objects, facts/matters of concern, and the study of the social. To engage with the discussion on uncertainties in co-design and, more specific in infrastructuring, this chapter clusters the diversity of articulations of the role and place of uncertainty in co-design into four uncertainty models: (1) the neoliberal, (2) the management, (3) the disruptive, and (4) the open uncertainty model. To deepen the reflections on the latter, the authors evaluate the relations between the role and place of uncertainty in two infrastructuring processes in the domain of healthcare and the quality of these processes. In the final reflections, the authors elaborate on how ANT supported in developing a "lens" to assess how uncertainties hinder or contribute to the quality of participation.

Therefore, this article rethinks the meaning and value of the term “vernacular design” in contemporary society, with a focus on vernacular graphic design. We argue that the domain needs an interpretation that is more attuned to novel approaches around hybridity and plurality in design. We frame this development from a theoretical perspective by introducing the concept of hypervernacular as a relational and plural approach. We ground our conceptual argument through a case study description that explores the everyday, ubiquitous, and more-than-human position of the plant species Japanese knotweed through collaboration.

It is the result of an extensive and complex process involving the cooperation and effort of hundreds of contributors-a process which we believe is worthy of a short recapitulation. The contributions to the ISEA2010 RUHR Conference programme have been selected from a total of 1052 proposals. About a fourth of them were paper submissions and proposals for conference panels, and in addition to these, many authors from other categories (exhibition, performance, film and internet projects), whose projects could not be realised in the festival programme, have been selected on the Reviewing Committee's recommendation to be invited for artist presentations in the conference framework. Submissions to the Call for Proposals came from 58 countries, the largest proportion being German contributions, followed by large numbers of projects from the U.S.

This article builds on an ongoing PhD research that explores the potential of experiential evaluation as an alternative and experimental approach to “hybrid forums”: an approach to open the participatory planning process for diverse actors and values. In order to render tensions visible and constructive in the participatory planning process, experiential evaluation creates “risky situations” in these hybrid forums. To discuss this approach of experiential evaluation, we use a methodological and analytical framework based on the four steps of strategic navigation techniques: tracing, mapping, diagramming, and agencying. We use these techniques to analyse two risky situations that were created through experiential evaluation within the participatory planning process of the neighbourho...

In an effort to address the needs of these patients, principles of inclusive design will be used in the assessment of the delivery of healthcare services. This investigative study, targeting the experiences of disadvantaged patients accessing acute NHS services, will focus on improving accessibility of services by identifying obstacles and highlighting areas for improvement. This work, along with data regarding patient experiences, will build a strong picture of the needs of these patients. Overall, this research will improve access to services and the overall patient experience. With the support of patient groups, we are investigating the issues that patients experience when navigating various healthcare services. Conducting interviews with staff will assist in mapping the flow of the patient through the system and identify stages where patients may encounter difficulties. Semi-structured interviews evaluating patients' expectations within one specific service will help to achieve an understanding of what service characteristics help create a positive experience. To help identify to what extent each patient's capabilities affect the barriers they may face in accessing services, a public opinion survey is conducted with the support of national charitable organizations. National statistical data, previously collected by the EDC, will be used to understand the prevalence of these issues in the NHS as a whole. The results of this work will identify obstacles faced by disadvantaged patients accessing NHS services and highlight areas for improvement. This case study will provide a basis for continued improvement of NHS services as a whole.

But densification means that the existing living environment transforms and has an influence on the livability. This can lead to resistance by the inhabitants: they want to keep the idea of livability in their neighborhood. In the case of the Heilig-Hart neighborhood, we use the method of experiential evaluation to open up the debate on livability in a transformative neighborhood. Hereby, we bring aspects of formal evaluation and joint fact-finding in a participatory action research. At the end of the paper we discuss the first observations of the enrolment of this method so far: the definition of values, its experiential quality via a test setup and its resulting tradeoffs, its enhancement of communication between city policy and inhabitants by providing a common language and the skills that have been made visible and are developed throughout the process. CCS CONCEPTS • Human-centered computing → Interaction design.
