Intra Body Area Networks (I-BANs) are envisaged as the tool to implement this platform and will exploit the human body as the transmission medium, causing undesirable overheating of tissues and organs crossed by electromagnetic signals carrying information. To cope with this issue, at the physical level, it has been recently proposed to use ultrasonic waves for I-BAN applications [1-4] both to improve the transmission performance constrained in case of RF waves by the composition of the body (more than 65% composed of water, a mean through which electromagnetic waves scarcely propagate leading to very high attenuation) and for the purpose of avoiding temperature rise in proximity of organic tissues.

In this demo we will prove the feasibility of setting up an ultrasonic I-BAN employing non ionizing radiations to perform multihop communications. We will identify critical features for the propagation and show that intra-body networking is possible.

ICN focuses on content handling and distribution rather than host-to-host communications. Satellite systems have always played a key role in content distribution and therefore, they are expected to be fundamental components of the information-centric networking. However, it is not obvious whether solutions that are being developed for terrestrial ICNs are effective in satellite scenarios as well. More specifically, focus of this paper is on in-network content caching, which is an important feature characterizing all ICN proposals but, as we will show, should be re-designed to address the specific characteristics of satellite networks. Indeed, in this paper a novel caching scheme named SatCache is proposed which exploits the broadcast nature of the satellite communication medium and creates a profile of the preferences of network users in order to ...

Such features are extremely valuable to network operators and therefore, the industrial and the academic research and development communities are paying increasing attention to SDN. Although manufactures of wireless equipment are increasing their involvement in SDN-related activities, to date there is not a clear and compre-hensive understanding of what are the opportunities offered by SDN in most common networking scenarios involving infrastructure-less wireless communications and how SDN concepts should be adapted to suit the characteristics of these networking environments. This paper is a first attempt to fill this gap. In fact, it aims at analyzing how SDN can be beneficial in infrastructure-less wireless networking environments, and how it should be expanded to take the character-istics of such networking environments into account. Also, a complete S...

Accordingly, several approaches have been proposed in the literature to increase energy efficiency. In some of such approaches radio interface is periodically turned off. As a consequence, the energy spent by each node is expected to decrease. In this paper we argue that this is not always true if geographical forwarding is applied. In fact, periodically turning off the radio interface results in a decrease of the actual node density observed in the network, which causes a decrease in energy efficiency. Another important issue that will be investigated in this paper regards the advantages of using multiple levels of transmission power depending on the current network conditions. This involves the adoption of more complex and expensive hardware, but achieves much higher energy efficiency. In this paper an analytical framework is derived which allows to evaluate the effects of the above solutions on the overall energy efficiency of a sensor network where geographical forwarding is applied. Numerical results demonstrate that to achieve high energy efficiency a minimum observed node density must be guaranteed and that this minimum value increases as the number of transmission power levels that can be selected by a relaying node increases.

So far, the chaining of those virtual functions, which is also known as the service chain composition problem, has been mostly performed by Telco Operators (TOs) for the great advantages they receive in terms of Capex and OpEX. However, such a fully centralized approach generally results in solutions which do not scale well with the number of customers. The aim of this paper is to provide a distributed, scalable and efficient solution to the service chaining problem. Specifically, we develop an VNF marketplace system where third-party VNF providers sell VNF as a service (VNFaaS) and adapt their pricing policies according to network dynamics. Also, we leverage on game theory to provide a (theoretically proven) efficient distributed solution which accounts for monetary costs, communication latencies and congestion of...

By using an SDN/NFV approach integrated with a mobile system it is possible to transmit a multimedia stream generated inside the human body to a mobile device, which then relays the information to the cloud for further processing. Therefore, we propose an edge approach to reduce overheads, thus making the support of time-constrained medical applications feasible. The proposed architecture has been implemented in a real testbed and the performance of the system were assessed to prove its feasibility.

This is a relevant problem because faulty traffic information can deviate traffic flows causing a decrease in the vehicle density in certain areas which results in a reduction of the sensing power of the VSN. Therefore, in this work the interactions between worm infection propagation and the mobility of infected vehicles are analyzed. The proposed framework is applied to an urban scenario in which mobility traces are generated by exploiting the urban mobility simulator SUMO.

This process is one of the main enabler of the forthcoming 5G network. Despite the huge amount of research that has been carried out in the recent literature around both service definition and deployment in a 5G network, and characterization of quality of service (QoS) and quality of experience (QoE), there is the need of testing services on field, in order to understand how key performance indices (KPI) depend on each level of the deployment architecture. This paper considers DiMoViS, an implementation of a softwarized video surveillance system in 5G networks, with the target of identifying the main QoS and QoE performance parameters. Measurements of these parameters are achieved by using a 5G platform provided by the European Fire TRIANGLE project.

In NFV networks, network services are provided as chains of different virtual network functions (VNFs), which are instantiated and executed on dedicated VNF-compliant servers. The problem of composing those chains is referred to as the service chain composition problem. In contrast to centralized solutions that suffer from scalability and privacy issues, in this paper, we leverage non-cooperative game theory to achieve a low-complexity distributed solution to the above-mentioned problem. Specifically, to account for selfish and competitive behavior of users, we formulate the service chain composition problem as an atomic weighted congestion game with unsplittable flows and player-specific cost functions. We show that the game possesses a weighted potential function and admits a Nash equilibrium (NE). We prove that the price of anarchy is upper-bounded, and also propose a distributed and privacy-preserving algorithm which provably converges toward an NE of the game in polynomial time. Finally, through extensive numerical results, we assess the performance of the proposed distributed solution to the service chain composition problem.

In particular, molecular communications, which exploit molecular nodes, are a powerful tool to implement communication functionalities in environments where the use of electromagnetic waves becomes critical, e.g. in the human body. In molecular communications, molecules such as proteins, DNA and RNA sequences are used to carry information. To this aim a novel approach relies on the use of genetically modified bacteria to transport enhanced DNA strands, called plasmids, where information can be encoded. Information transfer is thus based on bacteria motility, i.e. self-propelled motion, which under appropriate circumstances is exhibited by certain bacteria. It has been observed that bacteria motility presents many similarities with opportunistic forwarding. Currently the few studies on opportunistic communications among bacteria are based on simulations only. In this paper we propose an analytical model to characterize information spreading in bacterial nano-networks. To this purpose, an epidemic approach, similar to those used to model Delay Tolerant Networks (DTNs), is employed. We also derive two mathematical models which slightly differ. The first describes bacterial nano-networks where a single plasmid is disseminated according to an epidemic approach; the second, takes into account more complex mechanisms where multiple plasmids are disseminated as in realistic bacterial nano-networks. Numerical results being obtained are finally shown and discussed.
