In Europe, particularly in Italy, the depopulation of entire inland – and in particular mountain – areas is an undergoing reality and requires urgent reflections and effective interventions at the national and local level. The confcommercio-Legambiente report on Italy' s problematic settlements between 1996-2016 forecasts tells us of 1650 abandoned towns in 2016. The risk is the loss of an historical and cultural valuable heritage, and of immense economic, social and most of all environmental resources, containing a historical memory linked to 'making'. Although in recent years we are witnessing a slow rediscovery of the strategic role that these places can play within an overall framework of territorial development and decompression of congested urban areas, Italy lack the experience that could trigger long term innovative processes. The project described in this paper, starting from the potential offered by the current worldwide technological and cultural revolution, proposes a reactivation model for mountain inland areas, based on the renewal of local skills and supported by the creative know-how of makers. This strategy aims to increase the resilience of these territories, triggering dynamic and durable relational and productive processes. This experimentation is taking place in carbonara village, on the Irpinia mountains, abandoned after the 1930 earthquake.

In this context, immigration exercises a direct influence on the territory, because modifies its physical and functional structure, and also an indirect influence, expressing needs to which the city has to respond . The complexity of the immigration phenomenon, generated by different needs, requires new cognitive instruments and a dynamic, flexible approach, inspired by the possibility of changing established socio-cultural values that have heretofore been immutable. The research starts from the necessity to define controlling variables of the dynamics sparked by immigration, at the aim to begin a regeneration process based on the integration among populations, cultures, religions. The research proposes a knowledge-oriented methodology based on the concept of "resilience", seen as the capacity of a system to absorb disturbance and reorganize while undergoing change so as to still retain essentially the same function, structure, identity and feedbacks" ). The study focuses on the city of Naples, that at the beginning of 2009 numbered about 39.000 immigrants (residents, regular not residents, irregulars), representing about the 3% of the residents, and in particular on its historical centre, for the most fight it puts out against transformations. In this context, the analysis of different attributes that act on urban resilience acquires different meanings, and because of the multidimensionality of the immigration phenomenon and for the effect of increasing of the variables bearing on the relation user-space. The research ongoing is applied to three districts located in the historical centre of Naples with different density of immigrants and different social/cultural characteristics. In these districts "signs" of immigration are more or less evident due to their different "resilience". For each quarter the research analyses the main changes occurred in the last thirty years and the controlling variables with the relating thresholds of resilience with the aim to define resilience indicators. These indicators are a strategic instrument for an urban sustainable regeneration based on the enhancement or reduction of the urban system resilience and on the adapting and transforming approach.

The risk is the loss of an immense resource in economic, social and especially environmental, where has settled a historical memory linked above all to "do." Although in recent years we are witnessing a slow rediscovery of the strategic role that these places can be coated, in Italy there are few experiences that can trigger long-term positive processes. The project "e.colonia" is the proposal of + tstudioLab for the regeneration of abandoned villages being abandoned and that, starting from the potential offered by technological and cultural revolution under way at world level, it is proposed that reactivation model based on renewal of local skills, with the help of the creative know-how on the part of makers (craftsmen of the digital era, designers, architects, etc.). E.colonia wants to give new life that will spread in places and, from within, to set in motion cultural and productive processes, through the strengthening of collective identity, tend to increase the resilience of the system, moving it away from critical thresholds.
