Ge was epitaxially grown on Si by chemical vapor deposition, employing a low temperature buffer and cyclic thermal annealing to reduce the dislocation density. The overall performance is well suited for >2.5 Gb/s integrated receivers for the second and third fiber spectral windows.

The result is analogous to the well known Rabi splitting and optical nutation in atomic two-level systems, and can be used for controlled in-gap generation of optical frequencies. Photon-echo-like behavior and third harmonic generation are also investigated.

By employing an original but general top-down/bottom-up procedure based on symmetry analysis to the case of optical lattices, we derive the most widely applicable and the simplest possible model, revealing that the discrete nonlinear Schrödinger equation is "universally" fit to describe light propagation even in discrete tensorial nonlinear systems and in the presence of nonparaxial and vectorial effects.

This novel effect is phase independent, generally insensitive to polarization, and weakly affected by the magnitude of the control input. Multiple solitary waves can also be obtained, depending on the details of the interaction.
