We use data collected through a survey developed within the POCARIM project (funded by the EC under the EUFP7) in order to analyse variations in PhDs' career paths in a longitudinal dimension: we consider the career of each agent as a whole and investigate what elements related to individual features can influence career's entropy in terms of changes of sector and/or country.

However over the past two decades universities have undergone significant transformations, such as the move towards new missions other than teaching and research (Enders & De Weert, 2009), the increasing globalization of the academic sphere, the application of new managerial schemes (Hazelkorn et al., 2010), as well as other changes arising from policy reforms, all of which have combined to reduce employment opportunities in the higher education sector.

By ‘polity’ we mean the focus on state organization and the management of the system to obtain political order and stability, through laws, regulations and institutions in different types of politically organized communities (March and Olsen, 1984; North, 1990).
