The Generative Model Transformer (GMT) project is an Open Source initiative to build a Model Driv... more The Generative Model Transformer (GMT) project is an Open Source initiative to build a Model Driven Architecure TM tool that allows fully customisable Platform Independent Models, Platform Description Models, Texture Mappings, and Refinement Transformations. The project should result in (a) a tool that fulfils the MDA promise for faster/more accurate/better maintainable application development, (b) a tool for industrial use, and (c) MDA related research-which is encouraged and needed. A distinctive feature of GMT is the emphasis of model transformations as "first-class model citizens". The implementation of model transformations is envisaged to be in conformance with the future OMG modeling standard for Queries, Views, and Transformations (QVT).

Activities such as the MOF QVT [QVT-Merge Group, “Revised submission for MOF 2.0 Query/Views/Transformations RFP (ad/2002-04-10)”, OMG Document ad/04-04-01, URL: http://www.omg.org/docs/ad/04-04-01.pdf] are now extending these principles to transformation between models. However, meta-model incompatibilities between transformations reduce opportunities for effective re-use, hindering wide scale adoption. We introduce a pattern, the Side Transformation Pattern, that arises naturally as transformations are made re-usable, and present a series of examples that show how its use can bring clarity and robustness to complex transformation problems.

Modern assemblers provide powerful macro facilities to enable programmers to create their own hig... more Modern assemblers provide powerful macro facilities to enable programmers to create their own high level constructs. In contrast, many high level languages have at best very limited macro capabilities. The macro facility provided by the C preprocessor has been almost universally derided. We examine the limitations imposed by the lack of macro facilities for pattern programming, object persistence and object communication. We propose a metacompiler (a translator from a superset C++ language) that provides macros integrated into the language as meta-functions and meta-variables of meta-classes. We show how a variety of simple facilities provided at the meta-level can allow patterns to be expressed directly, substantially reduce the lexical size of C++ programs and their consequent maintenance cost, offer a more versatile programming environment, and provide facilities needed to support persistence and communication of objects.

The authors describe FOG, a meta-compiler for a super-set of C++, that provides replacement preprocessing and introduces static meta-programming, while preserving the spirit of C++. They show how implementation of preprocessor functionality in an Object-Oriented style eliminates unnecessary replication from practical C++ programs, and supports recent Object-Oriented Programming developments to a much greater extent than existing tools.

Freely available experimental transformation languages have begun to stimulate practical usage of... more Freely available experimental transformation languages have begun to stimulate practical usage of textual transformation notations. The forthcoming QVT transformation languages may provide standardisation or at least interchange capabilities for these experimental languages. Graphical transformation notations are proving rather less successful. We identify many disadvantages of the graphical approach, consider how they can be circumvented and describe changes in the UMLX notation and tool support to improve usability and QVT compatibility.

With the increased use of modelling techniques has come the desire to use models as a programming... more With the increased use of modelling techniques has come the desire to use models as a programming language as part of a Model Driven Architecture. This desire can now be satisfied by exploiting XMI for model interchange and XSLT for model transformation. However the current transformation techniques are far removed from modelling techniques. We therefore describe a graphical transformation language, which involves only minor extensions to UML but constitutes a high level language for transformations.
