The EDC operates in contingency and emergency situations to mitigate the impacts from oil spill accidents. They operate seven days a week and 24 hours a day. The main function of the EDC is to support the existing local contingency plans in the refineries and the Operational Units of the oil company. This means that the EDC operates in oil spill occurrence aiming to ensure the maximum protection to the Operational Units and refineries to minimize the environmental consequences and the cost of the emergency. In 2000 the EDC was Currently, there are nine EDC in strategic points around Brazil (Amazônia, Maranhão, Rio Grande do Norte, Bahia, Centro-Oeste, Bacia de Campos, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Minas Gerais), where there are petroleum activities. Each EDC is responsible to at...

To exemplify the use of the proposed model, we chose to analyze the World Youth Day (WID), an important event on the global scenario that happened this year in Rio de Janeiro, a city which will host big events in the next few years, like the World Cup and the Olympic Games. From this event, we chose two disturbances that stressed the system and had the possibility to cause a lot of problems to the event and the city, like the rains in Guaratiba and the arrival of the Pope's committee. After analyzing how the overall WYD organization deal with these disturbances we conclude that, besides the success of the event, the organization showed much more signs of brittleness than resilience.

In order to make the population aware, of some environmental problems this article was produced to analyze what factors people consider dangerous. In 2011, Rio de Janeiro went through difficult times, caused by one of the biggest floods seen in the city which ended up partly destroying cities of the state's the mountain region. Kids from aged 10 to 13 years from a high school in Rio were invited to participate in a study and they had to answer questionnaires before and after playing the game. From the results obtained, we analyzed how the game "Stop Disasters" developed by the by the UN can help create awareness and learning on how to behave in flooding situations at an accelerated rate.

Chemical, nuclear, and transportation (i.e. road, maritime, and aviation) industries are composed of various nested subsystems where smooth coordination and communication are essential features to achieve continuous and safe operations. Even though such subsystems exist since the industrial revolution, fewer studies have been conducted in these domains: to understand the work as it is done (rather than it is imagined), which is the only way to shed light about the variability in work performance and how these subsystems can combine to generate dangerous and unexpected outcomes. The theoretical framework of Distributed Situation Awareness provides a firm background to investigate the subsystems that constitute the chemical, nuclear, and maritime industries/domains. This paper unfolds...

This approach was elaborated based on concepts of the Fuzzy Set Theory and AHP -Analytical Hierarchy Process and implemented in a Primary Healthcare Facility in the City of Rio de Janeiro. Thus, the proposed approach can be used as an additional tool to support the work of healthcare professionals, providing further criteria for their decision making.

It discusses the concepts of cognitive systems, distributed cognition, and presents a review of methods commonly used in the elicitation of knowledge both in the case of traditional and complex environments. Then, it points to some advantages of a collaborative approach in comparison to other non-collaborative approaches. An evaluation plan of the collaborative ethnography approach based on experimentation, and the development of a mobile system to support the proposed methodology is also presented. This system aims to stimulate collaboration and an organization in the ethnographic knowledge elicitation process.

Modeling in some detail activities during the collision and related them to overall behavior and antecedents that stress the organization uncover some drift into failure mechanisms that erode safety defenses provided by the Air Navigation Service Provider (ANSP), enabling a mid-air collision to be happen.

To adopt technological devices to support the activities in environments where work is complex, characterized by the interdependence among a large number of variables, understanding about how work is done not only takes an even greater importance, but also becomes a more difficult task. Therefore, this study aims to present a method for modeling of work in complex systems, which allows improving the knowledge about the way activities are performed where these activities do not simply happen by performing procedures. Uniting techniques of Cognitive Task Analysis with the concept of Work Process, this work seeks to provide a method capable of providing a detailed and accurate vision of how people perform their tasks, in order to apply information systems for supporting work in organizations.
