The drawings were adhered to acidic cardboard wi th a darkened adhesive that was soluble in organic solvents. This paper focuses on one aspect of the treatments, the use of Gore-tex to deliver solvent vapor to swell and soften the adhesive. T h e t reatment of a series of drawings with the same adhesive and m o u n t problems was instructive in that it allowed modification and refinement of the technique with each successive drawing.

The technique is explained. Previous studies on rembrandt watermarks only allowed a general classification of the papers. A general type of watermarks is one produced over an extended period of time, by several mills and possibly also in different countries. Identical watermarks can result only from total superimposition: same shape, same position, therefore same mould. This investigation produced sets of identical watermarks and other interesting information on rembrandt's use of papers. The study will be extended to 3 major us collections, beginning a watermark archive which will be computerised. Hard copy will provide watermark images on cards arranged by century, country and artist. Photographs.

She also discusses the modifications to the basic technique which are necessary for the recording of large watermarks. AATA No.: 20-1554

In tests on newsprint they have found that magnesium bicarbonate, used alone or in conjunction with hydrogen peroxide, greatly reduce darkening of paper when it is exposed to light. AATA No.: 22-431
