In Portugal, falls are about 70 % of accidents in the elderly. The aging process can be understood as the set of changes structural and functional, namely in motor, sensory and cognitive functions. These changes interfere with functional performance, with the execution of activities of daily living (ADL), quality of life (QOL) and mobility functional. After a fall elderly develops a fear of falling related with low levels of balance confidence. Furthermore, the ability to maintain dynamic balance during postural task involves more attentional demands and high levels of environment control. The ability to perform a Dual Task (DT) is essential for the elderly, as it allows functional independence. In the elderly, dual- task activities are severely impaired which is why the Nintendo Wii® may be an important tool to maintain the proper functioning of the physical and mental levels among the elderly. This study sought to determine the effect of Nintendo Wii® training on dual-task performance, cognition, balance confidence, the health status and instrumental performances of daily life activities in older adults. A total of 18 participants aged 75.17±8.86 years were included. All participants were women, retired and living in their own residence. São conhecidos os efeitos positivos do exercício terapêutico no estado depressivo e estado cognit... more São conhecidos os efeitos positivos do exercício terapêutico no estado depressivo e estado cognitivo do idoso. Objetivo: Este estudo teve como objetivos avaliar e comparar os efeitos de um protocolo de coordenação motora, com a duração de 8 semanas, duas vezes por semana, 50 minutos cada sessão, no estado depressivo e estado cognitivo. Metodologia: 30 idosos (81,43 ±8,97 anos), 66,7% mulheres, clinicamente estáveis e capazes de realizar marcha, numa amostra por conveniência, participaram num protocolo de coordenação motora. Foram avaliados antes da intervenção (t0) e depois (t1) pela Escala de Depressão Geriátrica, EDG, (estado depressivo) e pela Mini-Mental State Examination, MMSE, (estado cognitivo). Resultados: Na EDG, no t0, o valor médio foi de 13,27 (±5,30) e no t1 foi de 11,37 (±6,15). Na MMSE, o valor médio em t0 foi 23,97 (±4,20), enquanto no t1 foi 26,1 (±3,86). As melhorias nos resultados foram estatisticamente significativas tanto no estado depressivo (p=0,000) como no estado cognitivo (p=0,000). Discussão: O protocolo usado neste estudo foi capaz de promover melhorias estatisticamente significativas (p≤0,05) no estado depressivo e estado cognitivo.
Introducao: No processo de envelhecimento ocorrem alteracoes fisiologicas, como a diminuicao da m... more Introducao: No processo de envelhecimento ocorrem alteracoes fisiologicas, como a diminuicao da massa muscular e ossea, da mobilidade, das respostas propriocetivas e sensoriais e a degradacao do estado cognitivo e mental. Com a deterioracao do sistema musculo--esqueletico, a funcionalidade do idoso diminui, tendo como causas responsaveis, por exemplo, o declinio da funcao dos membros inferiores. Por sua vez, a limitacao da mobilidade podera desencadear situacoes propensas ao desenvolvimento da depressao. O objetivo foi avaliar a relacao entre forca de preensao palmar, aptidao funcional dos membros inferiores, mobilidade funcional e depressao em adultos e idosos. Material e Metodos: Estudo correlacional, transversal e nao experimental, com uma amostra de 72 sujeitos com idades entre os 55 e 96 anos (76,92±11,78). Avaliou-se a FPP, a apti-dao funcional dos membros inferiores (30-Second Chair Stand Test), a mobilidade funcional (TUG) e a depressao com a Escala de Depressao Geriatrica de 4 itens. Resultados: Foi encontrada uma associacao negativa moderada entre a FPP e o TUG (rs=-0,488)(p=0,000) e tambem entre o TUG e o 30-Second Chair Stand Test (rs=0,632) (p=0,000) e uma associacao baixa entre a FPP e o 30-Second Chair Stand Test (rs=0,328) (p=0,005). Sem correlacoes com significado estatistico com a Escala de Depressao Geriatrica. Conclusao: Conclui-se que a diminuicao da forca muscular dos membros superiores e inferiores esta associada ao declinio da mobilidade funcional. Problem Statement: The home-based exercises programs are a method to promote health, quality of l... more Problem Statement: The home-based exercises programs are a method to promote health, quality of life and autonomy of elderly. Low levels of adherence are the major problem of these programs. Research Questions: Why did elderly people change from a home-based exercise program to a group program? Which are the results of this change after three and six months from the exercise program? Purpose of the Study: To evaluate the adherence to a home-based exercise and understand how the participants transformed the author's protocol into a group experience. To evaluate the participants reasons to make this change. Research Methods: The study was made in a Portuguese rural community; initial sample of 15 subjects who performed a homebased exercise program, during 8 weeks. The program was later transformed into a group program. Balance, mobility, cognitive state, health state and depression were evaluated also at 3 and 6 months after the program. A final interview revealed the opinions of the participants about the group program. Findings: Adherence to the home-based exercise program revealed that participants recognized the value of the program and this is expressed in the creation of a community group. Conclusions: Social participation of elderly in a Portuguese small rural community was developed with a home-based exercise program, and its transformation in a group program.
