THE RESEARCH PROBLEM AND METHODS: The article focuses on identifying the intellectual sources of the shepherd-king metaphor in antiquity, their anthropological and cosmological context, and the metaphor's fundamental message. Particular emphasis is placed on the socio-political aspect; thus, analyses of strictly theological significance are left aside. To achieve the research objective, the author makes use of interdisciplinary instruments, referring to archaeological, biological, and historical knowledge and especially to analyses from the field of the history of ideas. structure and essence, as well as their direct reference to, and significance for both anthropology and socio-political thought. CONCLUSIONS, INNOVATIONS, AND RECOMMENDATIONS: The article highlights the importance of the shepherd-king metaphor to the history of political ideas, outlining the impact of both its explicit theses and its more implicit, but no less important, elements. Attention was also drawn to the need for further research, which would enable the metaphor's socio-political aspects analyzed in this article to be combined into one coherent interpretation with the religious and theological aspects.

The issue is considered in the light of two basic epistemological standpoints: contextualism and presentism. These two approaches are often regarded as mutually exclusive; however, the author presents arguments for their possible complementarity and demonstrates that their concurrence is the necessary point of departure for critical attitudes in political philosophy.. An essential factor that should accompany also political philosophizing is historical awareness of the discipline itself. Philosophical reflection on politics can already be found in pre-Socratic reflection. Moreover, the foundations of the rationalization of reflection on the political sphere can be found long before the birth of philosophy, in various myths of the ancient world (we can cite as an example the indications for understanding a good ruler and good kingship in the Sumero-Akkadian Epic of Gilgamesh). To be brief, the philosophy of politics should be aware of the history of his research discipline, which, on the one hand, should guard him against prying open doors that are already open, and on the other hand, inspire him and indicate the main paradigms and indi-Folia Philosophica 34 ISSN 2353-9445 (online)

HISTORICAL ANALYSIS OF THE TERM: this section concisely presents the prevailing attitudes to the idea of equality from antiquity to modern times. Particular emphasis is placed on the most important sources of our modern and contemporary understanding of this idea. DISCUSSION OF THE TERM: this section analyses various aspects and ways of understanding the concept of equality in a socio-political context, with emphasis on equality before the law, equality of political rights, and social equality. SYSTEMATIC REFLECTION WITH CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS: this section discusses the most important socioeconomic and political challenges that are related to the idea of equality, including the need to take into account the demand for a more egalitarian distribution of goods and to broaden the scope of the political subjectivity of the individual.

HISTORICAL ANALYSIS OF THE TERM: Philosophical discussions devoted to the political and social nature of man have reached the level at which their speculative nature makes it impossible to continue any fruitful dispute. In this situation, an interdisciplinary approach that necessitates accounting for the findings of the natural sciences is required. DISCUSSION OF THE TERM: the natural sciences provide data on the social nature of man and the foundations of human moral behaviour that offers an innovative view of human nature and moral and ethical issues. SYSTEMATIC REFLECTION WITH CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS: Juxtaposing contemporary scientific knowledge with philosophical reflections that were developed during various historical periods requires a creative, interdisciplinary approach.

HISTORICAL ANALYSIS OF THE TERM: the principles that guide political life have been reflected on throughout european history from antiquity to the present day and have yielded a range of proposals that are, at times, contradictory. DISCUSSION OF THE TERM: the fundamental problem is the formulation of the most important criterion for moral and ethical evaluation; this can be, for example, the common interest, the common good, or being pro-social. SYSTEMATIC REFLECTION WITH CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS: Globalisation, multiculturalism, and democracy pose new challenges for humanity. It is therefore necessary to coordinate actions on a global scale, which requires developing basic shared principles.

Special emphasis is placed on the particular critical method used by the author of Ferdydurke. The essence of this criticism is the idea of the “equal-strength of opposites,” understood as the rejection of arbitrary and dogmatic (“ideological”) justification. My analysis encompasses three main themes found in Gombrowicz’s works: Ojczyzna versus Synczyzna (Fatherland versus Sonland), Cogito versus the Interhuman Church, and Polishness versus Europeanness.
