Design and Research

This paper highlights the approach being adopted by The Institution of Engineers (India) about its preparedness to meet challenges of the Washington Accord. A background about the Institution, professional examinations, popularly known as AMIE Examinations leading to graduate degree in engineering, and the input parameters, process parameters and output indicators are detailed in the paper to meet the challenges.

In a tete a tete with Built Constructions, Dr. L V Muralikrishna, President, Institute of Engineers
(India) touches upon the current needs of engineering segment from quality enhancement in education
to skills up-gradation and Engineer’s Bill.

The Institution of Engineers (India) was invited to present an India Paper at the Federation of Engineering Institutions of Asia and the Pacific (FEIAP) and ASEAN Federation of Engineering Organizations (AFEO) FEIAP-AFEO Workshop on "Green Design & Sustainable Construction" at Yangon, Myanmar on 10 November 2014.

Immediate Past President, Er. Ashok Kumar Basa, and Dr. Reddy represented The Institution of Engineers (India) and presented the India Paper titled “Towards Sustainable Infrastructure Development-Inclusiveness in Indian Projects”.

This Country Paper titled “Inclusive Engineering Innovations for Transforming Society: An India Approach” on the theme Bio-inspired Engineering Systems was presented at the Federation of Engineering Institutions of South and Central Asia (FEISCA) Regional Seminar on “Innovative Technologies for Excellence in Engineering” at Colombo,
Sri Lanka on 10 October 2014.

National Design  and Research Forum (NDRF)-an Autonomous Forum of IEI is actively involved in promoting the design, research, and development of mini and micro air vehicles. To realize a functional platform, NDRF is working on identifying critical technologies for development of Micro Air Vehicles and payloads including sensors.

Dr. Kalam was always focused on striving to remove the problems faced by Planet Earth in the areas of water, energy, habitat, waste management, and environment through the application of engineering and technology, and urged the Engineering Fraternity to pursue this with missionary zeal. Shri. Alimchandani was a pillar of strength to The Institution, and had provided sagacious counsel to strengthen the Indian Engineering profession particularly for the Concrete Engineering Community through fib International. We mourn their passing-on, and rededicate ourselves to contribute to the growth and progress of the engineering profession.

Dear Friends, Agriculturists globally are exploring the possibility of using technologies including micro air vehicles and sensors to gain insights in assessing nutrients and water requirements in growing plants, to maximize value for the farmer while minimizing environmental impact, and reducing waste of critical resources through precision agriculture. The National Design and Research Forum (NDRF) has been working in a collaborative mode with academia, research organizations, and industry to develop and realize Micro Air Vehicles and allied technologies. I urge the Indian Engineering Professionals to adopt an interdisciplinary approach and deploy these engineering advances to develop solutions, products, and services for social needs.

Natural disasters are nature's grim reminders to pursue man-made development activities with caution. As I am writing this message, Nepal and parts of the country has been struck by another series of tremors in addition to the devastating earthquake in the last week of April 2015. IEI on behalf of all Members expresses solidarity with the citizens of Indian and Nepal, and their engineering fraternity.

Dear Friends, Contemporary technologies ranging from Additive Manufacturing (AM) to data analytics and cloud computing are metamorphosing all industries. The recently-concluded premier global airshow and the largest edition of Aero India at Bengaluru demonstrated that AM can flourish in the "Make in India" regime to deliver value and help India leverage Asia's emergence as a significant aerospace market. IEI has played a significant role in introducing AM Technology to the Indian engineering education fraternity through NDRF and ESCI since 2001, and continues to work with NDRF's ProtoLab to cater to the needs of 3D-Printing and with ESCI to promote metal prototyping technologies.

The Institution of Engineers India, largest Multidisciplinary Professional Body of Engineers deploying Engineering and engaging Engineers in the Country over 96 Years. The document is focusing on achievements and initiatives of IEI in the year 2014-15.
