In the title compound, C 25 H 17 N 3 O 2 S, the coumarin ring system is essentially planar with a maximum deviation of 0.019 (2) Å. A weak intramolecular C-HÁ Á ÁO hydrogen bond stabilizes the molecular structure, so that the coumarin plane is approximately coplanar with the thiazole ring, making a dihedral angle of 2.5 (10). The two phenyl rings are nearly perpendicular to each other, with a dihedral angle of 81.44 (12). In the crystal structure, the molecules are linked into an infinite chain along the b axis by intermolecular C-HÁ Á ÁO hydrogen bonds. Weak C-HÁ Á Á interactions are observed between the chains.

The distribution of planktonic copepods was analyzed from samples collected at 13 to 20 stations during 4 oceanographic cruises along the Straits of Malacca (05 59 N, 99 59 E and 01 10 N, 103 29 E). Samples were taken in vertical hauls using a NORPAC net (140 µm mesh size and 45 cm mouth diameter). Univariate (number of species and diversity indices) as well as multivariate (clustering, ANOSIM, and SIMPER) techniques from the PRIMER software package were employed. In total, 117 copepod species were identified. Of these, 9 species are new records for the Straits of Malacca. Thirteen species accounted for 69.7% of the total copepod abundances on average for all cruises. Two characteristic copepod communities in the northern and southern parts of the Straits were distinguished. The shallow southern part was characterized by high abundance values, a low species diversity index (H of 2.967), and the dominance of a few coastal species such as Euterpina acutifrons, Oithona simplex, and Paracalanus parvus s.l.. The deeper waters of the northern part were characterized by low abundances, a relatively high species diversity index (H of 3.632), and the presence of epipelagic species belonging to neritic and near-coastal areas of the oceanic communities. Areas of high abundance were the near-coastal waters of Lumut and Port Klang in the northern and the central parts of the straits, respectively. Mean abundance estimates (2927 ± 1085 individuals/m 3) of copepods showed a maximum peak during the pre-southwest monsoon period. Although ANOVA showed no significant differences in copepod abundances between different parts of the straits and among cruises, ANOSIM applied to the average of all 4 cruises revealed that the communities of the northern and southern parts of the straits spatially differed.

The giant river catfish locally named guizza, Sperata seenghala has significant cultural and economic importance but the fish is now considered as critically endangered due to environmental and manmade interventions in aquatic ecosystem. In order to conserve and rehabilitate this species, an experiment on polyculture of guizza with indigenous major carps was conducted in earthen ponds. Three treatments differing in species ratios and combinations of fish were employed with two replicates each. Treatment-1 (T 1) was stocked with catla (Catla catla), rohu (Labeo rohita) and mrigal (Cirrhinus mrigala), treatment-2 (T 2) with catla, rohu and guizza (S. seenghala), while treatment-3 (T 3) with catla, rohu, mrigal and guizza. Guizza of T 2 was introduced instead of mrigal in T 1 and 50% of mrigal was replaced with guizza in T 3. The stocking density of fish fingerlings in all the treatments was 7500 individual/ha. Fishes in the experimental ponds were fed with supplementary diet comprising of rice bran (50%), mustard oil cake (30%), fish meal (19%) and vitamin-mineral premix (1%). Physicochemical parameters and plankton populations were within the appropriate levels for aquaculture. Mean growth and survival of catla and rohu were significantly higher in T 2 than in T 3 and T 1. Guizza in T 2 showed higher performances than in T 3 , while those for mrigal were higher in T 3 than T 1 (p < 0.05). The total gross and net productions of fishes were higher in T 3 than in T 2 and T 1 (p < 0.05). This trial is a successful attempt to culture the threatened guizza with major carps in earthen ponds, the findings of which would immensely be helpful towards the development of aquaculture and conservation of this important fish in captive condition.

Diet composition and feeding habits of fish larvae from the family Gobiidae were investigated in seagrass beds of Sungai Pulai estuary, Johor Strait, Malaysia. Samples were collected monthly from December 2007 to May 2008. Stomach contents were analyzed in 88 larval specimens with size range between 2.0 to 4.0 mm in total length.

The study on food and feeding habits of planktonic shrimp Acetes japonicas were done by examining the stomach contents of 164 specimens between June 2008 and May 2009. Samples were obtained from the bag net that was set along the bank of Tanjung Dawai estuary. Diet compositions of A. japonlcas were grouped into eight major categories: phytoplankton, zooplankton, algae, appendages of crustacean, plant matter, debris, unidentifiable items and sand and mud.

Monthly sampling for shrimp post-larvae was conducted between April 2007 and March 2008 from the seagrass beds of Sungai Pulai Estuary, Johor, Peninsular Malaysia. Samples were collected from subsurface using a bongo net equipped with a flow meter. In situ environmental parameters such as water temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, salinity, total dissolved solid and conductivity were recorded during each sampling time.

In this study, potential probiotic strains were isolated from fermented pickles based on antagonistic activity against two shrimp pathogens (Vibrio harveyi and Vibrio parahaemolyticus). The experiment was undertaken to see the effects of Bacillus sp. on the growth performance and disease resistance to Salmonella sp. infections. The use of probiotic microbes in poultry is commonly practiced. In this study, Bacillus subtilis was tested using a total of 120 chicks of age of 1 day after hatching. The growth traits examined were body weight gain and feed conversion rate. And also, the Salmonella resistance of Bacillus subtilis was tested after the chicks were orally administered with Salmonella pullorum by gavage force injections. The result showed that Bacillus subtilis yielded a high feed efficiency, consequently increased growth rate. For the effect of Bacillus subtilis on Salmonella infection, Bacillus subtilis significantly improved the resistance to Salmonella pullorum infection. Various clinical symptoms of Salmonella infection were highly decreased by addition of Bacillus sp.

This paper examines the impact of corporate governance on firm performance using cross sectional data from non-financial companies listed in the Egyptian Stock Exchange. The 88 non-financial companies on EGX100 index of listed companies on the Egyptian Stock Market are studied to examine the relationship between ownership structure, board structure, audit function, control variables and firm performance by using OLS regression analysis. The results show that ownership structure has no significant effect on firm performance. The only board structure variable that has an effect on firm market performance is board independence. Firm book value performance is affected by both board independence and CEO duality. Firm size and leverage have varying effects on both market and book value performance of firms.

Median cycle no. was 2 (range: 1−12). The PR and SD rate was 2.4% (1/42) and 45.2% (19/42) respectively. Median PFS was 2.64 months (95%C.I. 1.55-3.17) and OS was 6.60 months (95%C.I. 4.53-11.60). Grade 3 toxicities that occurred in 5% included: 4 (9.5%) abdominal pain, 4 (9.5%) hyperbilirubinemia, 4 (9.5%) raised alanine transaminase, 3 (7.1%) anemia, 3 (7.1%) vomiting, 2 (4.8%) distension, 2 (4.8%) hemorrhage, 2 (4.8%) prolonged QTc and 2 (4.8%) dehydration. One patient developed sudden death but it was determined not likely due to study medication. Conclusions: With the majority of patients having failed prior therapy, epigenetic therapy with belinostat demonstrates tumour stabilization and is generally well-tolerated. Further studies including combinational study with other agents is warranted.

Population parameters such as asymptotic length (L∞), growth coefficient (K), mortality rates (Z, F and M), exploitation level (E) and recruitment pattern of green mussel Perna viridis were estimated using length-frequency data from the coast of Malacca, Peninsular Malaysia. Asymptotic length (L∞) was 102.38 mm and growth coefficient (K) was estimated at 1.50 year−1. Total mortality (Z) for P. viridis was 2.48 year−1, while natural mortality (M) and fishing mortality (F) were 1.69 and 0.79 year−1, respectively. The growth performance index was (φ′) 4.197 and the exponent "b" of the length-weight relationship was 2.602 (±0.02) during the study period. The asymptotic wet weight estimated from length-weight relationship was 40.81 g. Exploitation level (E) of P. viridis was 0.32 while the maximum allowable limit of exploitation (Emax) was 0.43. The recruitment pattern was continuous with one major peak in the months of July-August. The exploitation level (0.32) and lower fishing mortality (0.79 year−1) indicate that the green mussel is under-exploited from Malacca coastal waters.
