In doing so, a qualitative case study design was employed. Data were generated from five chosen teaching staff of the model preschools purposively traced by the researchers. Interview protocol and observation checklist were utilized as a data-gathering tool. To comprehend the phenomenon, thematic analyses were used. The study's findings were illustrated with 3 major themes and 8 subthemes. There are average materials available for play and education in the model preschool. Teachers utilize play and learning materials to introduce new concepts, reinforce learning, promote socio-emotional development, and promote creativity. Several factors determine the usage of play materials for learning: economy, perception, and attitude of teachers, and educational qualification of teacher topping the list. In conclusion, play and learning materials are essential for preschool children's development. They help children learn in an engaging way, promote creativity and problem-solving skills, and provide opportunities for children to explore, learn, and grow. However, the level of play and learning materials is not as expected. This can create a disparity in the quality of education that children receive. To address this issue, increased funding for preschool programs, provision of training for preschool teachers on using play and learning materials effectively, and awareness creation about the importance of play and learning materials should be in place.

The objective of this study was to examine the phenomenon of streetism by employing the instrumen... more The objective of this study was to examine the phenomenon of streetism by employing the instrumental case study design and taking Hawassa City as a case. The researchers deliberately selected a sample of 12 street children and 4 key informants to gather the necessary data. To collect the data, the researchers employed interview protocols and focus group discussions as their tools. Thematic analyses were utilized to comprehend the phenomenon being studied. Three major themes and nine sub-themes were generated inductively to portray the phenomenon of streetism. The study revealed that street children primarily turn to street life as a result of factors such as poverty, familial abandonment, violence, the perception of freedom, and peer influence. In order to sustain their livelihood, these children engage primarily in informal labour, experience a transition within the street life, and spend a majority of their time participating in non-formal work and substance consumption. Due to their exposure to urban environments, individuals who participate in street life are susceptible to various health ailments, acts of aggression, substance abuse, and engagement in criminal activities. The phenomenon of streetism has evolved into a multifaceted and intricate social problem in contemporary times, necessitating a comprehensive and collaborative approach from society at large.

Recently sport betting has become a way of life in most major cities and towns of the world inclu... more Recently sport betting has become a way of life in most major cities and towns of the world including Ethiopia which resulted in a high rate of gambling among adolescents and young adults. This study was aimed to examine the prevalence of sport betting and its relationship with adolescent and young adults' psychosocial behavior. The study subjects were selected using convenience (availability) sampling. Thus a total of 146 adolescent and young adults involved in sport betting practices from Hawassa city and nearby towns were the study participants. In doing so, descriptive cross-sectional research design was employed. Data was produced Questionnaire and key informant interview protocols were utilized as a data gathering tools. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used to analyze quantitative data; whereas the qualitative data was analyzed thematically and using narrative mode. The findings show that betting market is engulfing in different city shores with having different modalities, Hulu and Harif sport bet are among favorite sport betting companies in the study area. Money, enjoyment and avoiding boredom were the three major reasons that trigger youths and young adults to be engaged in sport betting. Statistically significant, positive correlation was identified between frequency of betting and the social and psychological behavior of respondents. Based on the findings, it is recommended that planning and designing clear policy and capacity building programs, enhancing youth's awareness about the negative repercussions of sport betting (gambling), community monitoring, multi actor participation and moral education as a means of tackling the negative effect of sport betting.

The purpose of the study was assessing the determinants of risky sexual behavior in line with soc... more The purpose of the study was assessing the determinants of risky sexual behavior in line with social media utilization in the school of informatics, Hawassa University. In doing so, descriptive cross-sectional research design was employed. Data were produced from a total of 291 participants from School of informatics, of which 204 them were males and the remaining 87 females. Questionnaire and key informant interview protocols were utilized as a data gathering tools. At last data were analyzed by using quantitative and qualitative approaches. Descriptive statistics and multiple regressions were used to analyze quantitative data; on the other hand, the qualitative data were analyzed thematically and using narrative mode. The result revealed that entertainment, communication with other people and making companionship were the major reasons school of informatics students to utilize social media, respectively. Moreover, regression shows that sex, age, year, place of origin and time of using Social Media (SM) were statistically significant and they are determinants of risky sexual behavior in line with social media usage. In sum from the current study we can conclude that school of informatics sexual behavior is affected by social media utilization. Hence, planning and designing some modality that assists students to use social media for educational issues than mere entertainment is vital. As well, enhancing student's awareness about the negative repercussions of social media particularly related to risky sexual behavior if it is not used wisely.
