Resumen
Abstract
The water footprint is a tool that indicates the direct and indirect
consumption of fresh water, whether in a production process, product,
service, institution, geopolitical area, economic sector, a basin or a
person. The objective of this research was to calculate the water
footprint of the Villa Campus of the Universidad Científica del Sur for
its activities in 2019, using the methodology of the Water Footprint
Network. Which is considered a world standard for the evaluation of
the water footprint and based mostly on the work of Professor Dr. Arjen
Hoekstra, who introduced the concept of the water footprint in 2002.
According to the methodology, four phases: goal and scope definition,
water footprint accounting, sustainability analysis, and response
formulation. As a result, a water footprint of 774,322.19m3/year was
obtained, the indirect footprint representing more than half of the
water footprint with 53.7%, while the direct footprint represents 46.3%
of the total. Subsequently, a sustainability analysis of the water
footprint was carried out, taking into account the three dimensions:
environmental, social and economic. From this, eight measures were
proposed to optimize campus water consumption, of which seven have
been chosen based on the construction of the Marginal Correction Cost
Curves (MACC) and the calculation of the Net Present Value (NPV) of
each.
