ALZHEIMER'S DISEASE
Alzheimer's disease is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder with
characteristic clinical and pathological features. Common clinical
variations include differences in rate of progression, pattern of
neuropsychological déficits, and occurrence of non-cognitive
neuropsychiatric symptoms. Biological markers of Alzheimer's disease for
presymptomatic detection or definitive premorbid diagnosis are not
available. Typical pathological findings include neuronal loss,
neurofibrillary tangles, neuritic plaques and amyloid angiopathy.
This is a review of current clinical definitions of Alzheimer's disease. A
practical approach to pharmacological treatment of associated is
described mood and behavioural symptoms.
