Tourism has become a popular global leisure activity. In 2008, there were over 922 million
international tourist arrivals, with a growth of 1.9% as compared to 2007. International
tourism receipts grew to US$944 billion (euro 642 billion) in 2008, corresponding to an
increase in real terms of 1.8%.
Tourism is vital for many countries, such as Egypt, Greece, Lebanon, Spain and Thailand,
and many island nations, such as The Bahamas, Fiji, Maldives, and the Seychelles, due
to the large intake of money for businesses with their goods and services and the
8
opportunity for employment in the service industries associated with tourism. These
service industries include transportation services, such as airlines, cruise ships and
taxicabs, hospitality services, such as accommodations, including hotels and resorts, and
entertainment venues, such as amusement parks, casinos, shopping malls, music venues
and theatres.

Part 5. EXERCISES
Exercise 4
Burma's political reforms have drawn international attention and sparked a boom in its still fledging tourism
industry. Hotels and tour operators are scrambling to meet the growing demand from visitors eager to witness a
country in the midst of transformation.
This week in Rangoon 20 contestants competed for the title of Miss Tourism Myanmar 2012, a beauty pageant
organized by the tourism board to appeal to foreign visitors.
Tourism Board Secretary Kyaw Htun says Aung San Suu Kyi's endorsement of "responsible tourism" last year
has been a vital boost in Burma, also known as Myanmar.
"Before 2010 the Lady [Suu Kyi] didn't support visitors to come to Myanmar, but after 2010 she was encouraging
visitors to come see Myanmar," noted Htun.
Since Aung San Suu Kyi's release from house arrest in 2010, tourism has more than doubled, and is projected to
keep increasing at a rate of 30 percent per year.
Burma's political isolation has long kept it off the typical itinerary of holiday travelers. Now, it is that isolation and
ongoing political reforms that are drawing newcomers - some of whom are still anxious about visiting.
"The reason I'm here in Myanmar, I'm interested in the political situation," said Mari Nakogawa, a tourist from
Japan. "Like Aung San Suu Kyi, I cannot say it here, it's kind of scary. Most of Japanese newspapers say
Myanmar is dangerous."
Hotels in Burma are now booked several months in advance, doubling room prices in some cases.
But it's not only tourists who are eager to visit. Alex Ruther is the manager of the upscale Savoy Hotel.
"Because the country's opening up, the foreign investment laws are changing as well, so a lot of foreigners can
come in and invest. Foreign companies [are] coming in so it definitely puts the country on the global map," said
Ruther.
For Burma's visitors, such as these visiting the famed Shwedagon Pagoda, both the old attractions and the new
changes are an enticing draw.
10
Visitors are now encouraged to visit the country.
Political isolation has attracted foreign travelers.

Rental conditions
Car rentals are subject to many conditions which vary from one brand to another. The
vehicle must be returned in a good condition and must not exceed a maximum driven
distance, otherwise extra fees may be incurred. Additionally, some companies set a
minimum age for the vehicle driver, which in some cases is as high as 25, even in
countries where the minimum legal age to hold a driver's license is much lower. In all
cases a valid, current driver's license is required in order to rent a vehicle.
Recent conditions have utilized GPS technology to limit maximum speeds or driving to
specific regions. Renewable fuel vehicles are available in certain areas.
19
Car rental companies in Sydney, Perth or anywhere else in Australia have different levels
of damage responsibility if you have an accident.
The vast majority of car rental companies require the use of a credit card to make it easier
for them to trace a person should they attempt to steal a car, or to charge additional fees
at will if a defect is later found with the car.

Flight attendants
Once up in the air, flight attendants will usually serve drinks and/or food to passengers.
When not performing customer service duties, flight attendants must periodically conduct
cabin checks and listen for any unusual noises or situations. Checks must also be done
on the lavatory to ensure the smoke detector hasn't been deactivated and to restock
supplies as needed.
Regular cockpit checks must be done to ensure the pilot's health and safety. They must
also respond to call lights dealing with special requests. During turbulence, flight
attendants must ensure the cabin is secure.
Prior to landing all loose items, trays and rubbish must be collected and secured along
with service and galley equipment. All hot liquids must be disposed of. A final cabin check
40
must then be completed prior to landing. It is vital that flight attendants remain aware as
the majority of emergencies occur during takeoff and landing.
Upon landing, flight attendants must remain stationed at exits and monitor the airplane
and cabin as passengers disembark the plane. They also assist any special-needs
passengers and small children off the airplane and escort children, while following the
proper paperwork and ID process to escort them to the designated person picking them
up.

Exercise 3
If you check into "The Shack Up Inn", don't expect a night of opulence. Hotel guests stay
in 1 or 2 bedroom shacks, which are houses that once belonged to poor black farm
workers. This distinctive hotel is in rural Mississippi, a southern U.S. state. But it's not
listed in any phone book. The hotel has no advertising or marketing budget. Nor does it try
to attract the kind of American guest who may be offended by the transformation of a
piece of poor black history into a profitable business.

ICEHOTEL
The ICEHOTEL in the village of Jukkasjärvi, about 17 km from Kiruna, Sweden, erected
each year from December to April, was the world's first ice hotel, first opening in 1990.
In 1989, Japanese ice artists visited the area and created an exhibition of ice art. In
Spring 1990, French artist Jannot Derid held an exhibition in a cylinder-shaped igloo in the
area. One night there were no rooms available in the town, so some of the visitors asked
for permission to spend the night in the exhibition hall. They slept in sleeping bags on top
of reindeer skin - the first guests of the "hotel".
The entire hotel is made out of snow and ice blocks taken from the Torne River - even the
glasses in the bar are made of ice. Each spring, around March, Icehotel harvests tons of
ice from the frozen Torne River and stores it in a nearby production hall with room for over
10,000 tons of ice and 30,000 tons of snow. The ice is used for creating Icebar designs
and ice glasses, for ice sculpting classes, events and product launches all over the world
while the snow is used for building a strong structure for the building. About 1,000 tons of
what is left is used in the construction of the next Icehotel.
70
When the temperature drops and the snow guns start humming on the Torne River shore,
usually in mid-November, the building process begins. The snow is sprayed on huge
inverted catenary shaped steel forms and allowed to freeze. After a couple of days, the
forms are removed, leaving a maze of free-standing corridors of snow. In the corridors,
dividing walls are built in order to create rooms and suites. Ice blocks are now being
transported into the hotel where selected artists start creating the art and design of the
perishable material. Icehotel in Jukkasjärvi opens in phases, the first phase opens in the
beginning of December and for each week, another part of the hotel opens up for visitors
and guests until the beginning of January when the entire construction is completed.
When completed, the hotel features a bar, church, main hall, reception area and rooms
and suites for over 100 guests to sit and sleep on blocks of sculpted ice in the form of
chairs and beds. There is also warm accommodation available next to the hotel. The
Icehotel in Jukkasjärvi is known to be the biggest hotel of ice and snow in the world,
spanning over some 6,000 m². Each suite is unique and the architecture of the hotel is
changed each year, as it is rebuilt from scratch. Each year artists submit their ideas for
suites and a jury selects about 50 artists to create the church, Absolut Icebar, reception,
main hall and suites. When spring comes, everything melts away and returns to the Torne
River. The Icehotel only exists between December and April, and has been listed as one
of the Seven Wonders of Sweden.

Part 5. EXERCISES
Exercise 4
A new study of U.S. hotel room hygiene has found that potentially dangerous bacteria can lurk on surfaces such
as TV remotes and lamp switches. These results, say researchers, show that the hospitality industry - the nation’s
third largest industry - must move beyond visual inspections.
Researchers collected samples from nine hotel rooms in three American states. Team members checked 19
different spots per room for aerobic bacteria and coliform bacteria, which is associated with fecal matter.
The most contaminated surfaces weren’t always the most obvious ones. In addition to toilet seats and bathroom
sink counters, surfaces with the highest bacteria counts included TV remotes and bedside lamp switches, as well
as sponges and mops from cleaning carts.
That last finding is especially worrisome, says Katie Kirsch, a University of Houston undergraduate who helped
conduct the study, because if housekeeping carts are infected, they have the potential to cross-contaminate
rooms.
Kirsch and her colleagues recommend that hotels adopt a system called Hazard Analysis and Critical Control
Points (HACCP) Thirty years ago, NASA and the Pillsbury food company created HACCP to ensure safe meals
for astronauts.
Today it is used by livestock slaughterhouses, food manufacturers and restaurants around the world to identify
72
high-risk steps in food processing and handling, and to create protocols to reduce bacterial contamination.
Joe McInerney, head of a large hotel industry trade association, isn’t convinced there’s a problem. The risk of
spreading disease in a hotel room, he says, is "as significant a risk as opening the front door or walking into a
restaurant."
Some hotels, however, have already embraced high-tech cleaning. In May, Best Western announced plans to
equip its housekeepers with ultraviolet wands and black lights. The wands sterilize telephones, switches and door
handles. The black lights reveal biological matter that the human eye can’t see.
Company official Ron Pohl said the program is a way "to help ensure customer satisfaction, loyalty and,
ultimately, trust."

A restaurant in London is trying a new marketing ploy in a bid to boost sales during the
economic downturn. For the month of February, diners at the Little Bay restaurant near
the financial district have not been presented with a check at the end of their meal.
Instead, they have been asked to pay what they think the meal is worth - and the business
is booming.
