Licensing help
I'm working on improving Battle of Byram's Ford to get to GA and hopefully beyond, and it would be nice to include File:Battle of the Blue by Benjamin D. Mileham.jpg in the article, but there's some licensing difficulties. Painted in 1896, but I haven't been able to establish a true publishing date before then, and I'm struggling to find info on the painter to see if they've been dead 70 years. The Benjamin D. Mileham's I've been able to find are all too late to be that painter, except for a coach painter from Topeka born in 1851. This is an 1896 newspaper article referring to the painting being purchased and intended to be donated to the county and that Mileham was an employee of the Santa Fe, the company that put out the directory stating that Mileham was a coach painter born in 1851. And the painting was described as the "worst horror hung in a public place" in 1898. So would this be good on both ends - painter almost certainly dead for 70 years due to being born in 1851 and presumeably published before 1926 since it was the "worst horror hung in a public place" in 1898? Hog Farm Talk 04:56, 27 May 2021 (UTC)
- Hog Farm, Unfortunately, just being displayed wouldn't count as publication under US law. I searched on Google Books to see if I could find any early publications, but could not. This is a gray area because if it wasn't published until Internet age (and we could confirm a death date), then it would be PD-old-auto-unpublished[1], but it's usually impossible to prove lack of publication. (t · c) buidhe 05:04, 27 May 2021 (UTC)
- Dangit. Will try to dig around and see if I can find an old obituary for Mileham. Hog Farm Talk 05:08, 27 May 2021 (UTC)
- I'm assuming this which shows a death date of 1927 probably isn't reliable enough. Find A Grave also gives 1851-1927 and has a picture of his tombstone, but that's not any better. Hog Farm Talk 05:13, 27 May 2021 (UTC)
- Hog Farm, The issue is, how do we know it's the same Mileham? If the 1851 guy is named "Benjamin C Mileham" are they likely to be the same as the "Benjamin D. Mileham" who made the painting? (t · c) buidhe 05:16, 27 May 2021 (UTC)
- Yeah, there's no real good connection to be made, so I'll need to remove the image from the article. The "Benjamin C Mileham" is supposedly Benjamin D.'s son (the latter is mentioned further down in the page), but even with that, there's no real proof that its the right person with only a birth year, the name, and a connection to Kansas. Darn. Hog Farm Talk 05:21, 27 May 2021 (UTC)

DYK for The Holocaust in Greece
On 1 June 2021, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article The Holocaust in Greece, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that more than 80 percent of Greek Jews were killed during the Holocaust in Greece (pictured)? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/The Holocaust in Greece. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, The Holocaust in Greece), and if they received a combined total of at least 416.7 views per hour (i.e., 5,000 views in 12 hours or 10,000 in 24), the hook may be added to the statistics page. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Self-referential humor
In this RfC closure, did you assess that there was consensus to remove this content, which was part of the content originally disputed in the edit linked to in the RfC statement? MPants at work thinks not here and here. Thanks! — Bilorv (talk) 21:50, 1 June 2021 (UTC)

Glover close
Is there any reason why you decided to close the Glover RfC early? I thought the whole part of an RfC was a get a lot input from a lot different editors over 30 days. This is especially discouraging considering not a single opposer actually addressed my points. Spy-cicle💥 Talk? 22:19, 2 June 2021 (UTC)
- Spy-cicle, Actually, per WP:RfC, "An RfC should last until enough comment has been received that consensus is reached, or until it is apparent it won't be." In this case the consensus is very clear. Since the concern of opposers was about long-term significance, if Glover's comments are covered by secondary sources in the future it might make sense to revisit the discussion, but I don't see any benefit from reopening the RfC. (t · c) buidhe 22:26, 2 June 2021 (UTC)
- I understand. Just frustating that no one actually addressed my points at all and that was not reflected in your closing statement, as my points were also backed by policy/guidelines. Spy-cicle💥 Talk? 22:39, 2 June 2021 (UTC)

Hi buidhe thank you for your help with my page on knowledge of the holocaust!! :)) was just by any chance wondering if you could you assist in helping me sending a request to get a re-assessment for the page so that it may get a re-grading (so that it may be upgraded from a stub?) thank you do you by any chance have recommendations also for an infobox, that is required in my assessment outline May122789 (talk) 13:33, 31 May 2021 (UTC) |
- May122789 Actually, you can self-assess an article after improving it. I've gone ahead and reassessed it. I'm also going to tidy up the references and then it will continue to improve :) Ideally your instructor would only require infoboxes in articles that benefit from them, because abstract concepts like this article aren's suited for infoboxes. Is there a course page I can post about this issue? Honestly your work is better than any WikiEd student I've run across and I would hate for you to lose points. RM for Ryanair Flight 4978
Hi! Thanks for closing the RM at Talk:Ryanair_Flight_4978#Requested_move_25_May_2021. I saw that your closing statement stated in part, There is not presently a consensus to move to Arrest of Roman Protasevich, although there might be in the future.
I think this conclusion is premature, since the previous RM discussion was addressing whether to rename to a different title, "Forced grounding of Ryanair Flight 4978". While there were editors, myself included, who discussed potentially renaming to "Arrest of Roman Protasevich", not all participants in the discussion addressed that proposal.
I'm thinking of initiating a new RM to rename the article to "Arrest of Roman Protasevich". Would you have concerns about this? I want to ensure that I follow the proper procedures in terms of respecting the outcome of the RM you closed, while also avoiding the WP:MR process. Also pinging Melmann for notification. Edge3 (talk) 03:45, 3 June 2021 (UTC)
- Edge3, I think that starting a new RM to evaluate consensus for "Arrest of Roman Protasevich" would be fine. Just to clarify, my close was "Not moved" with regard to the original proposal and "No consensus" with regard to the suggested "Arrest" title. (t · c) buidhe 03:47, 3 June 2021 (UTC)
- Edge3 I also support opening a new RM for 'Arrest of Roman Protasevich', and I think it'd be appropriate if you do it. I won't do it purely cause it seems like a bad form given that the community has already rejected one of my proposals, but if you open it, I will support it. Melmann 08:55, 3 June 2021 (UTC)
- @Buidhe and Melmann: Thank you for your responses! I've started a new RM, as discussed. Edge3 (talk) 04:08, 4 June 2021 (UTC)

Friendly advice
Buidhe look, you know I value you as an editor, and the last thing I want to see is you being somehow sanctioned from editing the Holocaust topic. You know how easy it is to be sanctioned and how hard it is to have those sanctions removed later. I think you should correct yourself here[2] and stop digging a giant hole that eventually might be used against you by some people. The source says nothing of the sort you wrote; I think you should admit to the mistake and correct it. The longer this goes on, the bigger chances are that someone will bring that into the AE board, and you know how that might go. Roll the dice. Seriously Buidhe, I'm advising you from my sympathy to you but what you choose to do is up to you. - GizzyCatBella🍁 00:31, 5 June 2021 (UTC)
- GizzyCatBella, I already quit editing this area because I discovered some editors simply have no interest writing articles that align with mainstream views in Holocaust studies. The only reason for my engagement here is that some people decided to go after a featured article I wrote. (t · c) buidhe 00:41, 5 June 2021 (UTC)
- Just let it go Buidhe, one single line written by mistake is not worth it. I think you should not advocate for that being included in the article anymore and let it die out. Article is great by the way, thanks again for that. - GizzyCatBella🍁 00:53, 5 June 2021 (UTC)
- I am unaware of previous potential Buidhe AE history, but the above reads very much like WP:INTIM rather than friendly advice. Significant effort has been put into crafting an RfC, could the focus be on that? CMD (talk) 04:14, 5 June 2021 (UTC)

Assassination of Talat Pasha
First of all I want to thank you on you amazing work on the article. Knowing that you are working on the article to make it an FA, I have a question. In the funeral section it is mentioned that Invitations from Hayriye and the Oriental Club were sent to Talat's funeral,
the Oriental Club isn't mention in the article before and it isn't clear to what it refers, could you possibly add an inline explanation or link it to an article if it has one? - Kevo327 (talk) 09:30, 5 June 2021 (UTC)

Unreviewed nominations
All articles listed on both the new experimental User:SDZeroBot/GAN sorting and the old WP:GAN are "unreviewed nominations". The new bot list is an alternative ("Alt") list. Do this: Go to WP:GAN and click the helpful link I added to "skip to lists", you will see the bot's own link to the Alt GAN Sorting. Do you mind letting me know here what you had in mind or self-reverting your edit? Prhartcom (talk) 03:16, 6 June 2021 (UTC)
- Prhartcom, The regular GAN tab lists both unreviewed nominations and those that are under review, whereas SDZeroBot only lists those that are waiting for a review. I'm not sure how many people will be able to make sense of "Nominations [Alt GAN Sorting]". Something like "Nominations (annotated)" or "Nominations (alternate)" might also be easier to understand. (t · c) buidhe 03:21, 6 June 2021 (UTC)
- Okay, that was a good explanation actually, I did not know that, I appreciate you telling me that. Anything is better than "Unreviewed nominations" so I am reverting. We'll let the community decide. Prhartcom (talk) 03:40, 6 June 2021 (UTC)

Hi Buidhe, just wanted to let you know that my post on the talk page of Never again had nothing to do with our interaction yesterday, but was coincidental. I realized only now - as an unpleasant surprise - that you seem to be (one of?) the main author(s). No worries at all! I think you're right that there's a connection between the disappearances and the report and the slogan, but I'm not sure I have the sources to add it to the article. (t · c) buidhe 18:19, 7 June 2021 (UTC)
- I will keep this on my todo list and could provide you with a brief proposal (time target not provided ;-). I do not have the sources at present, but as you probably realized I have a lot of information on this huge topic in my memory. I wrote nearly all articles in the German WP which are related to "Forced Disappearance" and the south-america-wide cruel phenomenon of the 'Desaparecidos' some years ago, and these are well sourced, also partly with engl. literature. I stopped for reasons of personal mental sanity (the subject is partly nearly sickness inducing), and there is still a lot of white space which could be filled. However, I wouldn't advise splitting out without an expansion as I already pared down the section in the main article as much as I thought would benefit it. (t · c) buidhe 20:17, 15 June 2021 (UTC)

DYK for Amna Suraka
On 18 June 2021, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Amna Suraka, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that Amna Suraka, "the world's most depressing museum", includes a hall of broken mirrors (pictured) with a shard for each victim of the Anfal genocide? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Amna Suraka. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Amna Suraka), and if they received a combined total of at least 416.7 views per hour (i.e., 5,000 views in 12 hours or 10,000 in 24), the hook may be added to the statistics page. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

An article needing some attention: Gestapo–NKVD conferences
As a long-term lurker of Wikipedia editions in various languages, I have noticed you are a prolific editor in the topics of antisemitism, World War II and persecutions. I similarly noticed you've also edited this article: Gestapo–NKVD conferences, that admittedly has sparked my interest a while ago. I've commented on several issues related to this article (Talk:Gestapo–NKVD_conferences#This_article_is_deficient,_based_on_unfounded_rumours), but unfortunately I didn't really gather that much feedback.
I was informed today that users with fewer than 500 edits are subjected to some restrictions, so I just wanted to make clear that I personally wanted to nominate said article for deletion but I am prohibited from doing so. I did however raise the issue and advocate for deletion on Russian Wikipedia a few hours ago (it's pretty obvious these poor quasi-hoax articles on various language editions all derive from the 2007 version of the English language Wikipedia). Cheers and happy editing and any comments on how to deal with the issue here or cross-wiki would be appreciated. Potugin (talk) 03:15, 19 June 2021 (UTC)
- Potugin, I'm sorry you've run into editing restriction. I don't have time to look into this issue at the moment, but my advice would be to use the template {{edit extended-protected}} on the talk page. State that you'd like to nominate the article for deletion and give the rationale. If it's not protected, I would just go ahead and nominate for deletion directly, I don't see why this would fall under the topic area that is supposed to need it. Hi, I'd like you to please revert your non-admin closure at Talk:Vesta (mythology). With 10 "supports" and 5 "opposes", it's not a "no consensus" situation, and even if it is, an admin should be the one to weigh the opinions rather than a typical user given that it's clearly controversial. If it is not reverted, I will of course send it to Move Review. Thank you.ZXCVBNM (TALK) 00:18, 20 June 2021 (UTC)
- (talk page stalker) @Zxcvbnm: can I advise you to read this ANI thread? While I disagree with what the consensus was, I don't think Buidhe's close was particularly unreasonable. Elli (talk | contribs) 00:22, 20 June 2021 (UTC)

Revolution of Dignity
I would like to request that you revert your move at Revolution of Dignity. In the first place, the title had been stable from November of last year. Therefore, WP:BRD applies. While I would like to revert your move per WP:BRD, you used the page mover tool in a way that has rendered this impossible (please see Wikipedia:Page mover#Conduct expectations). Please revert your move and file an RM request. RGloucester — ☎ 15:33, 24 June 2021 (UTC)
- RGloucester, The move was originally moved by you, undiscussed. Shortly afterward, it was contested on the talk page. That would be the correct occasion to move the page back, as it was disputed, and open a formal RM. Since the move was disputed and consensus was never established for it, it can't be considered the stable version.
- In order to be successful a move request would have to 1) explain why WP:POVTITLE doesn't apply, 2) delineate a specific scope according to reliable sources that doesn't overlap too much with other articles, and 3) show why your proposed name meets WP:CRITERIA better than alternative names. (t · c) buidhe 03:20, 25 June 2021 (UTC)
- It was not truly disputed, for it were 1) it would've been moved back 2) requested to be moved at RM/TR or 3) an RM would've been opened. More importantly, the article remained stable long after that section was opened. Having been stable is itself a form of consensus. I once again ask that you revert your move in line with Wikipedia:Page mover#Conduct expectations. It is unacceptable to use the page mover right in such a manner, and more importantly, you have no standing to determine what would make an RM 'successful' (you are not a neutral party in what is now a 'dispute'). I suggest you remember your station, revert your move, and open an RM. RGloucester — ☎ 04:19, 25 June 2021 (UTC)
- Reverting undiscussed moves is acceptable regardless of the means used to do so. The fact that Heptor did not move the page or file at a certain venue, which they perhaps don't even know exists, does not negate the fact that they challenged the move. Nor does it imply that you had any consensus to take that action. I strongly suggest you file a RM to determine which page title has consensus. In the meantime, the stable title is 2014 Ukrainian revolution, which the article had for years without any challenge. (t · c) buidhe 04:27, 25 June 2021 (UTC)
- This is not correct. Undiscussed moves are not inherently any less valid than discussed moves. Consensus can be established through editing. Indeed, if someone had immediately reverted the move, then one could say that you would be correct. This is not what happened. You are the one that has made the undiscussed move, away from the stable title of more than half a year, using the page mover tool to gain an upper hand in a dispute. Again, I suggest you consider your position. I would also suggest that you not speak on behalf of Heptor, an editor of an unsavoury type of that I reckon you'd rather not be associated with. RGloucester — ☎ 04:30, 25 June 2021 (UTC)

It's acceptable to use pagemover tools to revert undiscussed moves, something that comes up enough that it has a dedicated section on RM/TR. If it's acceptable to list something there and have someone else move it, logically it is acceptable to perform this move directly. Being at a certain title for some months does not inherently mean it is the stable title. Stable means it has consensus (or at least WP:Silence) and for this title, it never did.
I don't know anything about this editor but the key point is you are supposed to discuss controversial moves rather than make them unilaterally. Any undiscussed move may be reverted. (t · c) buidhe 04:39, 25 June 2021 (UTC)
- Yes, exactly. Your undiscussed move should be reverted, but unfortunately, your use of the page mover tool has made this impossible for me to carry out. Again, see Wikipedia:Page mover#Conduct expectations. Please revert your move now, and file an RM. RGloucester — ☎ 04:42, 25 June 2021 (UTC)
- User Buidhe, can you please explain why you continue to spread misinformation? Who exactly do you think you are? If you want to change the longstanding title of an article, and someone else objects, the correct thing to do is file an RM. For reasons I cannot understand, you are acting as if you have some kind of authority. You do not. And yet, you stand in the way of every normal procedure for requesting a revert to your malicious move. I kindly suggest you stop before this escalates any further. Image-related question
Hello. Apologies for this random message. I have a question about the following image (File:Foxybrowndior.jpg). Does everything seem okay with it and would it be appropriate to use in an article? I am uncertain as it is a promotional image of the artist and I have not really seen promotional images like this in WikiMedia commons. I am curious about this as I would like to have a FA about a song by this individual on the front page. That article is currently this image (File:Foxy brown-03-mika.jpg) and the one linked above is just more visually interesting in my opinion. However, I wanted to get a more well-informed opinion about this prior to do any substitutions. I am likely over-thinking this, but any insight would be greatly appreciated. Have a wonderful rest of your week! Aoba47 (talk) 02:11, 25 June 2021 (UTC)
- (talk page stalker) I don't have Buidhe's depth of expertise here, but what you want to do for a press photo like that is to confirm it's actually released under said license. A good way to do this is to get in contact with the copyright holders and ask them to send a license release to c:COM:OTRS. As it stands, images like this are often just uploaded by unconnected people who don't understand image copyright (the CC-BY-SA 4.0 license specifically can be suggestive of this, as it's the default license in the Commons upload wizard and a lot of people just assume "oh, that must be the way images on the internet are copyrighted" if they don't know anything about the topic.) Vaticidalprophet 02:37, 25 June 2021 (UTC)
- Aoba47, Nominated for deletion on Commons. Reverse image search with Google shows that the image has been floating around the internet for years, which increases the likelihood that the uploader is someone other than the actual copyright holder. I would also agree with what Vaticidalprophet said. (t · c) buidhe 03:13, 25 June 2021 (UTC)
- Thank you both for the responses. I am not good at images and I have had my own issues at the WikiMedia Commons area. I have seen this image before so I was quite surprised to see it on here. I will probably stay out of the deletion discussion as it is probably best to keep that discussion to editors who are more familiar with image policy, etc. Thank you again for the feedback! Aoba47 (talk) 16:33, 25 June 2021 (UTC)
Dachau Report, once more...
Hi Buidhe, I got the impression that you have a talent to reduce complex issues/subjects to the understandable core (deletion as in "emphasis unusual for a military report" is not an option in the present case, though ;-). I ran into an issue while finalizing the article after User Yeeno's copy editing. The matter is broadly laid out here on his talk page. If you have time, I would appreciate if you could take part in that process. Maybe the solution is quite simple, I had in mind a new order of the sentences in the paragraphs in question, which might strongly improve understandability. Easier way to see a page's move history?
Hello Buidhe. I asked this question at Wikipedia:Help desk but got no response, so I thought I'd ask you since you're active at WP:RM and have probably run into the same problem.
I've been using the move log tool, but it's cumbersome because you have to enter the former name of the page rather than the current name (so you have to dig through the page's history to find its original name), and it only shows one entry at a time. Is there anywhere I can see an article's entire move history in one place?
Let me know if you have any advice. Rublov (talk) 16:24, 30 June 2021 (UTC)
- Rublov, Unless the page is really popular you can easily see the move history by looking at the edit history of the talk page, ctrl-f "move" if necessary. (t · c) buidhe 16:26, 30 June 2021 (UTC)
- Ah, that's a good method. Thank you. Rublov (talk) 16:35, 30 June 2021 (UTC)

The Holocaust in Greece
Hello:
I have just started the copy edit of The Holocaust in Greece you requested from the GOCE. A quick question. Is there a reason why the Background section uses bullet points? The text is actually in paragraphs, not the fragments normally associated with bullet points. I would convert these to paragraph form, myself. Twofingered Typist (talk) 13:39, 4 July 2021 (UTC)

Hello:
The copy edit you requested from the Guild of Copy Editors of the article The Holocaust in Greece has been completed.
Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.
I finished my c/e before you read the note above. As you have perhaps guessed, I would suggest you convert these "points" as they are into paragraphs. Best of luck with the FAC when you get to it.
Regards,
Twofingered Typist (talk) 19:16, 4 July 2021 (UTC)
- Twofingered Typist, Thanks so much for the copyedit! The reason I used bullet points is because of what it says in MOS:PARA: "Short paragraphs and single sentences generally do not warrant their own subheading; in such circumstances, it may be preferable to use bullet points instead." I think the background section would be too long if it were just paragraphs, but each of the bullet points is too short for its own section. (t · c) buidhe 19:22, 4 July 2021 (UTC)
Okay, we'll agree to disagree. I believe three of the four "bullet points" are actually paragraphs. It'll be interesting to see what the FAC reviewer thinks. Cheers, Twofingered Typist (talk) 19:30, 4 July 2021 (UTC)
