This is a collection of discussions on the deletion of articles related to Football (soccer). It is one of many deletion lists coordinated by WikiProject Deletion sorting. Anyone can help maintain the list on this page.
- Adding a new AfD discussion
- Adding an AfD to this page does not add it to the main page at WP:AFD. Similarly, removing an AfD from this page does not remove it from the main page at WP:AFD. If you want to nominate an article for deletion, go through the process on that page before adding it to this page. To add a discussion to this page, follow these steps:
- Edit this page and add {{Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/PageName}} to the top of the list. Replace "PageName" with the relevant article name, i.e. the one on the existing AFD discussion. Also, indicate the title of the article in the edit summary as it is particularly helpful to add a link to the article in the edit summary. When you save the page, the discussion will automatically appear.
- You should also tag the AfD by adding {{subst:delsort|Football|~~~~}} to it, which will inform editors that it has been listed here. You may place this tag above or below the nomination statement or at the end of the discussion thread.
- There are a few scripts and tools that can make this easier.
- Removing a closed AfD discussion
- Closed AfD discussions are automatically removed by a bot.
- Other types of discussions
- You can also add and remove other discussions (prod, CfD, TfD etc.) related to Football (soccer). For the other XfD's, the process is the same as AfD (except {{Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/PageName}} is used for MFD and {{transclude xfd}} for the rest). For PRODs, adding a link with {{prodded}} will suffice.
- Further information
- For further information see Wikipedia's deletion policy and WP:AfD for general information about Articles for Deletion, including a list of article deletions sorted by day of nomination.
This list is also part of the larger list of deletion debates related to Sports.

Disputed draftification. Draftify until something happens, like the event at all. WP:TOOSOON 🇺🇦 FiddleTimtrent FaddleTalk to me 🇺🇦 16:16, 18 September 2024 (UTC)
- Support draftify as an ATD as this is TOOSOON. There is no SIGCOV of this event to satisfy N. Bobby Cohn (talk) 17:19, 18 September 2024 (UTC)
- Have you done a WP:BEFORE talking about the SIGCOV, in the language most associated with the tournament? May 2023 article on new format [1] May 2024 article on entrants [2] Article four days ago on fixtures [3]. I've never heard that articles on tournaments have to be hidden away before they actually start, and doing so with a month to go seems like a waste of everyone's effort. - Keep and improve by adding references. The tournament is clearly notable. In my opinion, it's not a WP:TOOSOON since the matchups were determinated for the first round of the tournament, so there are some useful contents in the article. Lâm (talk) 19:24, 18 September 2024 (UTC)
- Keep I don't get this nomination, it's the equivalent of the EFL Cup in Portugal. There are sources online, have you even done a WP:BEFORE? [4], [5], [6]. Sorry, but this is a pathetic nomination and you should be WP:TROUTed. Govvy (talk) 19:47, 18 September 2024 (UTC)

From Google Translate: "On 19 September, the Jinhua Sports Center Stadium and the Zhejiang Normal University East Stadium will welcome the first round of the Hangzhou Asian Games football group match. The Zhejiang Normal University East Stadium has also been renovated. Its lawn looks very flat to the naked eye, but in fact it is high in the middle and low on both sides, with a slope of 0.3% to prevent water accumulation in the lawn during the rainy season. For this reason, the staff also used the satellite positioning system to ensure accuracy when laying the grass. According to the staff, the lamps used in the gymnasium and stadium of Jinhua Sports Center are the same as the "Big Lotus" main stadium of the Hangzhou Asian Games. These LED lamps have many advantages such as energy saving and environmental protection, low electricity bills, durability and long life, soft light without flicker, rich colors and many shapes."

- Delete - "Some coverage" is now routine match coverage in a book jam packed with lies from a country with a wholly unreliable media. The other book is just a sentence. Dratify shouldn't be an option as it is unlikely sigcov will emerge in the future. Dougal18 (talk) 08:15, 2 October 2024 (UTC)
- The film I mentioned above contains significant coverage (as well as a scene that went something like: "Every North Korean from his generation recognizes his face. Every younger North Korean recognizes the name 'Yang Song Guk, hero of the eighth World Cup'"). In addition, there's also another scene with a player showing a book full of newspaper clippings for the players from the Cup – so its clear they were well-covered (and the suggestion that everything from North Korean is wholly unusable is ridiculous – it should be used with caution, yes, but not outright banned). Please add new comments below this notice. Thanks, Owen× ☎ 18:02, 1 October 2024 (UTC)- Keep. Given the slightly unique nature of the LOI Premier Division, I believe it should meet the notability guidelines set by WikiProject Football with some reasonable flexibility. Excluding University College Dublin (UCD), all the other clubs in the league operate on a fully professional basis. This is a situation where a professional player (Goddard) is making appearances against professional players at professional clubs.
- While the guidelines suggest that a player is generally notable if they’ve appeared in a fully professional league (which technically isn’t the case here due to UCD), surely these are guidelines - not strict policies? Shouldn’t we allow some flexibility in cases like this, where the vast majority of the league is professional? We're not disregarding the guidelines but rather applying them in a way that stays true to their purpose—recognising players competing at a professional level.
- In addition to above sources, there's Dundalk Democrat coverage, further Irish Independent talking about Goddard's performances, BBC Sport match coverage. In fact, if you dive a bit deeper into Google, there's many more sources that mention Goodard by name in match reports from sufficient sources. Josh (talk) 08:36, 6 October 2024 (UTC)
- Match coverage is not SIGCOV, it s routine. Playing at professional level is irrelevant, WP:NFOOTBALL has been abolished. All that matters is coverage. GiantSnowman 09:41, 6 October 2024 (UTC)
- Keep - Per users above. Young player with ongoing pro career who already has sources and will get more playing in one of Irelands most high profile clubs. Thanks, Das osmnezz (talk) 21:22, 8 October 2024 (UTC)
- Weak keep - borderline, the Lancashire Telegraph and Dundalk Democrat coverage isn't stellar but across the various articles I do think it adds up to something together with the Straits Times, and the articles do include biographical information of the subject beyond direct quotes or signing details. I don't quite buy the argument that if Goddard is notable then any professional player is notable; I've definitely come across many professional players who have less coverage available (and whose articles do not typically survive AfD). signed, Rosguill talk 13:48, 9 October 2024 (UTC)

- Draftify: While they don't seem notable at the moment, they could 100% have coverage around them in the future. Article seems in okay shape, so I'd rather move it to draftspace where it can be worked on rather that a flat-out deletion. SirMemeGod 17:19, 26 September 2024 (UTC)
- The article is nominated for deletion by the base it fails WP:GNG. References are poorly-formatted too. I don't think Diviš will gain any significant coverage in the future, since the clubs he has played for are certainly not well-known outside Slovakia, but of course we won't make WP:CRYSTALBALL predictions. In its current state, the article is written like a database or directory and does not contain anything about what Diviš accomplished to prove that he deserves a Wikipedia article. ⋆。˚꒰ঌ Clara A. Djalim ໒꒱˚。⋆ 13:45, 27 September 2024 (UTC)
- The clubs don't need to be well-known outside of Slovakia. We only need reliable sources from within Slovakia. Being notable in one location is enough for an entry in the English Wikipedia. How the references are formatted is not a reason for deletion. Geschichte (talk) 07:18, 29 September 2024 (UTC)

The claim to notability, playing 66 minutes in the second league of Portugal, is extremely weak. There are some sources, but they seem like WP:ROUTINE transactional news: [11] [12] [13]. These two might be more substantial, but are paywalled: [14] [15]. Perhaps someone can access them? Either way, his achievements were so minor that I don't think it meets the policies. New sources are either from the league in which he plays or are basic WP:ROUTINE coverage about a specific game with no meaningful coverage of the player himself. This is not WP:SIGCOV. Anwegmann (talk) 15:50, 15 September 2024 (UTC)
- The new sources (sport.ua/2024-09-14, ua-football.com/2024-09-15) have nothing to do with the league (UPL) in which Pshenychnyuk plays, and imho they are not something like WP:ROUTINE coverage. Web-wiki-warrior (talk) 19:04, 15 September 2024 (UTC)

Sport.ua confirms that he scored his first goal and that he is a midfielder but the rest is pure Q&A with no independent analysis. UA-Football confirms his age and number of appearances and then copies and pastes the same Q&A from the previous source, so is also not sufficient. - I think the most important thing about a source according to WP:SIGCOV is not evidence of notability, but rather sufficient and significant coverage on the topic. Imho the source provides it. Web-wiki-warrior (talk) 08:21, 16 September 2024 (UTC)
- Keep - The source provides information about the importance of the goal scored by the player. In addition, there is information about the player's technical skills that he used to score. The article also provides statistical information about the player. The importance of the victory the team acquired through the player's goal is also mentioned. In my opinion the source presents a compact but good analysis that can be considered as significant coverage. Adding the other two sources (sport.ua/2024-09-14, ua-football.com/2024-09-15) to the source gives, in my opinion, sufficient and significant coverage here. Web-wiki-warrior (talk) 19:29, 15 September 2024 (UTC)

- I'm not necessarily questioning good faith here, as it's certainly not bad faith, but the creator's understanding of what is significant and meaningful coverage is deeply, deeply flawed, and this has been shown over several articles/AfDs now. I think submission should be an absolute minimum for any kind of draftification. Anwegmann (talk) 03:00, 16 September 2024 (UTC)

- @Clara A. Djalim: Sorry, but imho you are wrong again if we take a closer look at your sentence "almost nobody outside Ukraine knows the clubs he played for". Pshenychnyuk plays for Ukrainian Premier League side FC Chornomorets Odesa. If you don't know the team doesn't mean nobody outside Ukraine knows the club he plays for. If we take a look at Wikipedia article FC Chornomorets Odesa (it's the club Pshenychnyuk plays for), we can see that article is provided by 37 languages. Furthermore, it is not a criterion of WP:SIGCOV whether someone outside Ukraine knows/doesn't know football teams from the Ukrainian Premier League. - The routine transactional announcements have two sentences of coverage each, with the rest being quotes. - I'm not sure if I'm missing a WP:NSPORTS policy here but what is the policy that says articles about transactions don't count towards coverage? I would also dispute the characterization of the OneFootball article. It's an article focusing on coverage of things she said and her performance on the field as well as her relation to the team, she is the primary subject of the article; I can't really see anything that wouldn't make it WP:SIGCOV. 🌸wasianpower🌸 (talk • contribs) 23:20, 13 September 2024 (UTC)

- Delete. Sourcing is nowhere close to the IRS SIGCOV required by NSPORT. The OneFootball article has zero secondary independent coverage of Wilde: every single sentence is either reporting what she said or is about something other than her. And on top of that it's also a reprint of a FAWSL piece, so it and the routine transactional announcement count as ONE source of non-GNG coverage. Not to mention that FAWSL appears to be SPS -- it's essentially a blog written and edited by one person, and such sources can NEVER be cited in BLPs. So in effect we have no RS coverage at all. JoelleJay (talk) 23:37, 15 September 2024 (UTC)
- Delete per JoelleJay, not much else to add. Note that Wilde is young and may become notable in the future so no prejudice against creating again should she gain some significant coverage. Spiderone(Talk to Spider) 16:49, 17 September 2024 (UTC)

This relatively new youth-only football club fails WP:GNG; there is no WP:SIGCOV of the club in independent, secondary, reliable sources. (It may just be WP:TOOSOON since this club isn't yet two years old, so I would support draftification as an AtD if other editors agree, but deletion is also an appropriate outcome.) - part merge and redirect to Riyadh. Svartner That tournament is way off. Considering the city/town they are building in, I feel that article would be a better choice. It could be notable in the future, but that is a long way off and also running WP:CRYSTAL. @Miminity: I really don't think this is the best bundling because I feel King Khalid University Stadium needs a different venue article, that being Abha. - @Svartner: And when they are done with the world cup, they will be used for other football clubs, then there is the multifunctional use. Other sports maybe played at these venues, so redirecting to where you said doesn't help those. etc. Govvy (talk) 08:30, 15 September 2024 (UTC)

- Redirect, support 2034 FIFA World Cup#Venues as the target. @Govvy: Before the World Cup even starts, I'm most certain the stadiums will have full-fledged articles, no later than the date the construction is finished - which negates the concern that the redirect target might change. - Comment. Creator is globally locked. The page is not great, but is a part of a series of 2014 J3-League club seasons. Geschichte (talk) 11:11, 13 September 2024 (UTC)
- I agree, it’s part of an entire series of articles for the different Japanese football leagues which not only tracks the competitions year by year, but the teams too. Cutting out a single article in the series seems like it would break up the series for no good reason, when the information itself is super clearly presented, and threaded, in a way I haven’t been able to find anywhere else online.
- In my opinion deleting it would take away something useful. For that reason, I have the page a solid edit tonight. I’ve still got to go ahead and add match report links to each individual game, but I think I at least covered the basics.
- This is such a useful resource that I’m going to make it a mission to pick through all the rest of the articles in the series one by one, and expand / source each of those as well. So it would be really nice if you didn’t delete this one article as I’m doing that…

Please add new comments below this notice. Thanks, Owen× ☎ 14:46, 19 September 2024 (UTC)- Obviously I’m not voting again, having already voted, but I’ll further explain my reasoning having spent the duration of this deletion discussion attempting to edit the article into compliance.
- As the article stood when nominated (by a user who has since quit, after having several of his articles similar to this one likewise nominated for deletion / draftified, but then kept - having made “why are mine deleted when there are articles like these” type arguments), it completely lacked sources and content. The nomination was a fair cop. Since the nomination though, I’ve found and cited several sources, reworked the article in ways which I believe both clearly lay out the season, and that prove there was significant coverage in Reliable, Independent, Secondary sources, with the likelihood of there being more sources out there which I have not yet found (searching in Japanese, my second language, slows things down, but this was the first full season in a newly formed professional competition in a major developed country - the chance of there not being more sources that I just haven’t found yet is basically zero.
- I would like to just remind people voting that the criteria is that sources proving notability are likely to exist, not that they are cited in the article as currently written. The appropriate policy is
- - “ Notability requires only that suitable independent, reliable sources exist in the real world; it does not require their immediate presence or citation in an article. Editors evaluating notability should consider not only any sources currently named in an article, but also the possibility or existence of notability-indicating sources that are not currently named in the article. Thus, before proposing or nominating an article for deletion, or offering an opinion based on notability in a deletion discussion, editors are strongly encouraged to attempt to find sources for the subject in question and consider the possibility that sources may still exist even if their search failed to uncover any.”
- I am not accusing anyone of arguing for deletion in bad faith, I think we are all trying to do what is right here, but I would like to ask anyone leaning towards deletion to ask themselves whether it is in part because they are not interested in the topic of the article, and don’t really consider foreign language sources to count when judging reliability on an English Wikipedia page.
- I’m going to keep poking away at the article, searching for more sources, and editing if I have time, and honestly I think that efforts to gradually improve the article is a better way to approach this rather than deletion, but I’ll leave that up to you guys now that I’ve said my piece. Absurdum4242 (talk) 05:32, 21 September 2024 (UTC)
- Weak keep. The article has been improved, although I only see one independent/secondary source (correct me if I'm wrong). I don't really have a P&G-based view on this, but in general an article on a season of a sports team that's more than a stub and meets WP:V generally satisfies the criteria for a WP:SPLIT and has a valid navigational/informational purpose, even if there isn't WP:SIGCOV of the season itself. Dclemens1971 (talk) 22:30, 26 September 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks for commenting. Just re sources, some of them are press releases from the league, but apart from the one you mentioned, we have a report on the need for the stadium development / licensing requirements from an independent community development organisation, a historical overview of the stadium redevelopment from the government of another prefecture who is looking to build stadiums there, an article in an online soccer magazine explaining the promotion / relegation games system (it was the inaugural season, so the system was new) giving dates and teams for the matches, and finally an overview of the full season, and of individual matches (one so far, but I’ll add them all eventually if this article is kept) by an independent sports data collection and visualisation company which doesn’t just get the data from the official sources, but also watches the games to collect their own extra data, which it then synthesises into proprietary secondary statistic (Chance Building Points being the main one), and visual game timelines. - As I wrote, the sources used do not document his notability. Wiki is not a player database and a few possible starts for a professional club won't change anything about that. This player has not accomplished anything yet, and we are not predicting from a crystal ball whether he will ever accomplish anything. - The article from Bóng Đá Plus provides a significant coverage about the player, detailing his family background, career, and playing style. Additionally, there's also the article from Dân Việt that also gives a resume of his career and his playing style. It's worth noting that the player recently signed with the runners-up of the previous season in Vietnam's top football division. This significant move, in my opinion, justifies why a player from low-tier Czech teams deserves a Wikipedia article. Lâm (talk) 13:12, 12 September 2024 (UTC)
- WP:SPORTSPERSON: Meeting this requirement alone does not indicate notability. WP:SUSTAINED: There have been reports of him entering professional football, but that's not enough as he may not make it. Does not pass WP:GNG. He does not have a single start in a professional football competition and the sources used do not document his notability in any way. Maybe speedy deletion per A7 is possible. FromCzech (talk) 05:36, 10 September 2024 (UTC)

- Comment – He's actually quite well-known in Vietnam, due to his call up to the Vietnam national under-23 football team. There are a lot of articles about him in Vietnamese, which I believe do pass the WP:GNG. But as you mentioned, he did not have a single game in a professional football competition, and also no appearance for Vietnam youth national teams. I see this article as WP:TOOSOON . Please add new comments below this notice. Thanks, Extraordinary Writ (talk) 09:43, 17 September 2024 (UTC)- Weak keep as the references cover the player significantly and surely passes WP:GNG. However, what make me consider is that the player doesn't have much of a career, but the fact that he got call up to the Vietnam national football team makes it valid to keep this article. What do you guys think? Lâm (talk) 09:00, 20 September 2024 (UTC)
- Just repeating myself, but passing GNG criteria is not confirmation of notability, and we are talking about youth team, not a senior team, and about a preliminary squad as he withdrew the call up, not a final nomination. And this is a one year old event; since then, he has not appeared anywhere. Given that no one was in favor of keep in the discussion before the relisting, a consensus is being sought whether to draft or delete. FromCzech (talk) 09:18, 20 September 2024 (UTC)

Delete: I'm failing to see the notability here. The references provided are just profiles and clearly doesn't have any SIGCOV. I'm not convinced of the established notability comment per GiantSnowman. Taking part in Olympics doesn't warranty any notability, if there aren't any sources backing it up. My search results also turned out nil and clearly no SIGCOV or GNG met. The Herald (Benison) (talk) 09:12, 24 September 2024 (UTC)
- After reading through BF11's comment, it's evidence some notability might be present in the North Korean sources. I'm okay with a draftify too. The Herald (Benison) (talk) 17:22, 24 September 2024 (UTC)
- This is clearly one of the examples were requiring strict SIGCOV compliance is patently absurd. Where on earth are we supposed to go to find North Korean newspaper archives? I can only note that in a scene in the film The Game of Their Lives (regarding the 1966 North Korean team), one North Korean player showed a book full of newspaper headlines for the top players with the national team – so it is obvious that the sport was very well-covered at the time and I don't see why a few years later would have been any different. Another way to notability would be WP:ANYBIO if Kim received any of the top honors in North Korea, which would be either Merited Athlete or People's Athlete. Looking up his name (김정민) in relation to the title Merited Athlete (공훈체육인) I get results including a piece from the Minju Choson stating in the preview "화원1동에 입사한 만경대구역상하수도관리소의 김정민,량은향 로동자부부 ... 공훈체육인칭호가 수여되였다. 로력훈장이 1명에게,국기훈장 제2급이 18명 . [Kim Jong-min and Ryang-hyang, workers of the Mangyongdae District Waterworks Management Office in Hwawon 1-dong, were awarded the title of Meritorious Sportsman.]" – I have a strong feeling this was him (esp. given that we have no other North Korean 'Kim Jong-min's) but I receive warning messages when entering the site so I can't look further. Searching his name in relation to the 'Mangyondae District Waterworks Management Office' ("입사한 만경대구역상하수도관리소" "김정민") brings up another piece from the Rodong Sinmun further discussing 'Kim Jong-min and Ryang-hyang' ("화원1동에 입사한 만경대구역상하수도관리소의 김정민, 량은향 로동자부부는 현대적인 살림집을 받아안고보니 우리 원수님의 은덕이 너무도 크고 ... [Kim Jong-min and Ryang-hyang, workers of the Mangyongdae District Waterworks Management Office in Hwawon 1-dong, received a modern house and realized that the grace of our Marshal was so great...]") but likewise I cannot access it further. IMO I'd like to keep this given how accomplished he is and how ridiculous it is to find North Korean newspaper sources. BeanieFan11 (talk) 14:55, 24 September 2024 (UTC)
- Draftify: I agree with BeanieFan11's argument - proving WP:GNG for a North Korean would be extremely difficult. At the same time, the article gives very little information about the subject and needs improving. It makes sense to draftify and find sources to add to it so that it can be more useful to readers.DesiMoore (talk) 16:06, 24 September 2024 (UTC)

I am bundle-nominating all league season pages of the Talent League competition for deletion. This bundle incorporates the 25 articles listed below.
On balance, these articles fail WP:GNG. This competition does not garner the level of coverage or references about its seasons and results to justify having season-by-season articles. I include the italicised caveat because, as this is the main underage recruitment competition in Victoria, the league's players and structure do receive a decent amount of non-routine individual coverage, as a WP:BEFORE search will attest; but this coverage is all primarily focussed on the league's function as an under-aged talent pathway. The seasons themselves (i.e. who won/lost, grand finalists, etc.) receive only passing WP:ROUTINE coverage. I note also that 19 of the 25 articles (those from 2000–2018) are currently based entirely on a single database reference, and those which aren't are almost entirely from non-independent sources. I see no valid alternative to deletion and that all content worth saving is already found on the main Talent League page.

The point Aspirex makes about TAC Cup coverage mainly focusing on individual players or general aspects of competition structure, not specific results, rings true to me. – Teratix ₵ 02:25, 8 September 2024 (UTC)
- User:Aspirex, this AFD is not formatted correctly for a bundled nomination. You can't just write down a list of linked articles and consider them to be included in this nomination, our closing tool, XFDcloser will not recognize them as nominated articles. Please review the instructions at WP:AFD for nominating multiple articles and format this nomination correctly. No matter how this discussion is closed, this needs to happen. Thank you. Liz Read! Relisting comment: Relisting. We still need to hear arguments from more editors on what should happen with all of these articles or this AFD may close as no consensus. What outcome would you like to see? Why? Could anyone supply a source assessment of at least one of these articles?
Please add new comments below this notice. Thanks, Liz Read! Talk! 02:13, 21 September 2024 (UTC)
- Sorry, I know from a closer's perspective it's frustrating to not have participants take a clear position, but frankly it would be very time-consuming to go through each season and exhaustively demonstrate no significant coverage exists. All I can do at this point is give my judgement as a user who has edited a fair amount in the area – based on my experience, probably the level of coverage is as Aspirex says it is. Perhaps soft delete, with no prejudice against someone who does find some coverage and wants to restart the pages? – Teratix ₵ 03:43, 27 September 2024 (UTC)

The result was soft delete. Based on minimal participation, this uncontroversial nomination is treated as an expired PROD (a.k.a. "soft deletion"). Editors can request undeletion of these articles. Liz Read! Talk! 23:16, 20 September 2024 (UTC)
- 2017 TAC Cup Girls season (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views) – (View AfD | edits since nomination)
- (Find sources: Google (books · news · scholar · free images · WP refs) · FENS · JSTOR · TWL)
I am bundle-nominating all league season pages of the Talent League Girls competition for deletion. This bundle incorporates the six articles listed below.
On balance, these articles fail WP:GNG. This competition does not garner the level of coverage or references about its seasons and results to justify having season-by-season articles. I include the italicised caveat because, as this is the main underage recruitment competition in Victoria, the league's players and structure do receive some non-routine individual coverage, as any WP:BEFORE search will attest; but this coverage is mostly focussed on the league's function as an under-aged talent pathway. The seasons themselves (i.e. who won/lost, grand finalists, etc.) receive only passing WP:ROUTINE coverage. Existing references in all six articles are sparse, and either come from databases or non-indepenent sources.
I see no valid alternative to deletion, and that all content worth saving is already found on the main Talent League Girls page.
I am also nominating the following related pages because they are all part of the same bundle of seasons:
- 2018 TAC Cup Girls season (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views)
- 2019 NAB League Girls season (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views)
- 2021 NAB League Girls season (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views)
- 2022 NAB League Girls season (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views)
- 2023 Talent League Girls season (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views)

- 2016 VFL Women's season (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views) – (View AfD | edits since nomination)
- (Find sources: Google (books · news · scholar · free images · WP refs) · FENS · JSTOR · TWL)
I am bundle-nominating all league season pages of the VFL Women's competition for deletion. This bundle incorporates eight articles.
On balance, these articles fail WP:GNG, and this competition does not garner the level of coverage or references to justify having season-by-season articles. Existing references across all nine articles are almost exclusively non-independent sources (from the league's website, clubs' websites and scores databases), occasionally with a brief WP:ROUTINE article about the grand final result; in particular, although the recent articles have healthy-looking reference counts, it's largely padded by short non-independent, routine articles from club websites which fill out the tables of coaches, captains and best-and-fairest winners. WP:BEFORE searches for "VFL Women's" and "VFL Women's season", Google-filtered for news and excluding afl.com.au results, and the results are a very thin collection of local newspaper clippings which are closer to human interest stories than sports WP:SIGCOV.
I see no valid alternative to deletion, and that all content worth saving is already found on VFL Women's and List of VFL Women's premiers.
I am also nominating the following related pages under the bundle:
- 2017 VFL Women's season (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views)
- 2018 VFL Women's season (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views)

- Speedy keep: Competition receives WP:SIGCOV from what is left of the News Corporation legacy media, both at the statewide and local level. ProQuest has approx 400 keyword filtered references (there was 804 on my first pass through) for "VFL women" for the 2016 season alone, with spikes around the Grand Final and VFL/W Awards; across News, Fairfax/Nine and other Australian news sources. I find this AfD to be WP:POINTY and disingenuous. Merging these forks back into VFL Women's would result in an unweildy mess of an article. If the state-level competition of a women's Australian football competition does not warrant the little amount of referenced information currently present, are we WP:BUILDWP with useful encyclopedic content for future readers? Relisting comment: I'd like to hear more opinions.
Please add new comments below this notice. Thanks, Liz Read! Talk! 23:36, 13 September 2024 (UTC)- Keep per @Storm machine's argument. I would be concerned if an article with 40+ references can be thrown away as part of a bulk AfD without any attempt from the nominator to improve it further. What is the end goal here? Gibbsyspin 03:55, 14 September 2024 (UTC)
- My point is the following: yes, 2023 VFL Women's season has 43 references (I assume that's the one you're referring specifically to); 37 of them are statements from club websites which serve to fill out this table of the names of captains and coaches, and this table of best and fairest winners. Every Australian rules football season from the lowest suburban/country level to the highest professional level could be written to at least this standard using a mix of club website references and WP:LOCAL newspapers, but that doesn't make them notable. What I can't find despite looking is genuine independent WP:SIGCOV of the VFL Women's which elevates this league to the point that it should have individual season articles. This is not a question of improvement – any article can be improved – it's a question of assessing the body of available references and reaching a determination of notability or lack thereof. My end goal is that this league be treated like all other low-coverage leagues in the Australian rules football Wikiproject: a main article with a history section, a list of premiers/grand finals, a list of B&Fs, and club-by-club information split out among the individual club pages. Aspirex (talk) 23:36, 14 September 2024 (UTC)
- Questions then: where are you stopping? Why do the VFL/SANFL/WAFL season articles exist in their current forms? Have any of those competitions had WP:SIGCOV to your standards since their heydays? Or has coverage retreated to the margins? If this is your baseline, then how does any sports non-top level competition fit into your ideal? Shall we inform the editors who maintain the AIHL, Hockey One, or Queensland and NSW Cup rugby league season articles of impending AfD?
- The VFLW/SANFLW/WAFLW competitions easily pass WP:GNG and maintain enough coverage from what's left of the legacy media and enthusiast press to justify the level of content present to have season articles the same way that their men's equivalents do. Storm machine (talk) 10:00, 15 September 2024 (UTC)
- Can you link some references? As I said in the nomination, my BEFORE searches have not yielded anything that looks like independent SIGCOV. I want to know what references you're looking at to draw your conclusion (and I'm sure the closer would want to see them as well). Aspirex (talk) 21:58, 15 September 2024 (UTC)
- Currently have nine non-AFL/club references for the 2024 season article, which given the amount of content compares rather favourably to say 2024 Carlton Football Club season to pick an article at random. Storm machine (talk) 02:22, 16 September 2024 (UTC)
- Half of those nine are routine match reports on the grand final. A couple are routine reports on NSW teams playing games against VFLW teams. Cherny's article is the only one which is genuine SIGCOV, but it is a general article about AFLW and VFLW pathways - it offers scant coverage of its VFLW season. Aspirex (talk) 03:35, 16 September 2024 (UTC)
- Go nuts and add more then: [24], [25], Storm machine (talk) 03:56, 16 September 2024 (UTC)
- Keep. A valuable collection of encyclopedic data, that is well resourced with both secondary and, yes, some primary sources. What harm does it do to keep this stuff? And it is a fair point, VFLW gets a broadly similar amount of media attention that leagues like Hockey One and the NSW Cup. So bring on the AfDs for all those articles and more just because you're pedantic. Global-Cityzen (talk) 00:57, 20 September 2024 (UTC)
