Wikiproject for districts of India

There should be a wikiproject to include information about all districts of India. After that, we could try and start a project to include information about all the 600,000 villages of India ;) --Just my 2 cents -- Hemanshu 12:31, 6 Mar 2005 (UTC)

FYI, I've created a list of districts in India in my userspace: User:Brhaspati/indiadistricts, so that you don't have to go through the individual state pages. About the 600,000 villages - if we have even a sub-stub for each, about 50% of Wikipedia will become India-related :-) -- Brhaspati (talkcontribs) 14:55, 2005 Mar 6 (UTC)

There is also a List of Indian districts article. Tom Radulovich 17:03, 6 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Our state articles are still very poor (We however have 1 state as a FA). I suggest we improve our states and cities information before contributing to district details. Nichalp 18:31, Mar 6, 2005 (UTC)
I am not thinking about well-written district articles here but atleast stubs should exist for all districts. This is normally present in all encyclopedias unless I am mistaken. Is there a Wikiproject for states and union territories of India? I don't see any harm in starting a project for districts as well... that's how the wiki works... people do what they like to do... I am just thinking about co-ordinating efforts made by people to make articles about districts. not deciding the priority. --Just my 2 cents -- Hemanshu 07:03, 7 Mar 2005 (UTC)
I have no problems with the stubs. I would also like to see a template of all the districts of a state arranged in a neat table on the state page just like the US states have their own counties. In this way it would be easier to add information. Nichalp 18:06, Mar 7, 2005 (UTC)
Agree, once the stubs are done we should make the template pages. kaal 19:22, 7 Mar 2005 (UTC)
It should be the other way around. having a template would be easier to fill in the red links. Nichalp 20:19, Mar 8, 2005 (UTC)
This task may be a good candidate for a bot, similar to User:Rambot. I've put in a template for the stub articles below. Feel free to modify it. -- Brhaspati (talkcontribs) 16:21, 2005 Mar 7 (UTC)
I agree that we need to remove all red links from the list of indian districts with atleast a stub. Lets give the template a few days on this page so that people can add and modify it. kaal 19:22, 7 Mar 2005 (UTC)
Btw, if we are going to run a bot, where does the source data come from? Are we parsing the states articles to do that? I'm asking this because I want to run a bot for the same purpose on Tamil language wikipedia. -- Sundar (talk · contribs) 04:28, Apr 5, 2005 (UTC)
For the stub template mentioned below, I've been using the stuff on my sub-page (User:Brhaspati/indiadistricts). I've been adding some of them myself - I created the pages offline with a shell script and I pasted the pages in the same sequence that they appear in on the page. (This is not as tedious as it sounds). I've completed some of the states like this, so those have been pruned from the list. -- Brhaspati (talkcontribs) 14:20, 2005 Apr 5 (UTC)
On a side note, I see that some states are much more red-linked than others. Does this indicate the distribution of Wikipedians from India? This might potentially cause some systemic bias within India-related topics. -- Brhaspati (talkcontribs) 14:20, 2005 Apr 5 (UTC)
I've filled in info for the districts of Sikkim along with their HQs. Goa is already complete and I can add some info on Maharashtra districts. After I finish Kalimpong and Gangtok, I'll be doing up the Maharashtra page.  =Nichalp (talk · contribs)= 20:02, Apr 6, 2005 (UTC)
User:Kappa left a message on my talk page, asking if templates and categories could be added when the stubs are created. I'm updating the template below to take this into account. Rename the individual cats and templates accordingly for any states that you may edit. -- Brhaspati (talkcontribs) 01:08, 2005 Apr 7 (UTC)

For districts and their HQ that share the same name, disamb should be used eg. Ratnagiri (both a HQ and district) should be disab. as Ratnagiri district and the capital should be Ratnagiri  =Nichalp (talk · contribs)= 19:58, Apr 8, 2005 (UTC)

Template for district stubs

$NAME is an administrative district in the state of $STATE in India. The district headquarters are located at $HQ. The district occupies an area of $AREA km² and has a population of $POP (as of 2001). India-geo-stub

looks good to me. Tom Radulovich 15:11, 9 Mar 2005 (UTC)

If you haven't gone too far into it yet, perhaps it would be handy to change "in the state of $STATE" to "in the state of $STATE"? QuartierLatin1968 01:41, 7 Apr 2005 (UTC)

India city projects -- RFC

I would like to have a standard as to what should be added in each city page. I have made a list of points that I feel should be included in all cities so that they can be cerified as a Featured Article. I hope we can add five cities in the near future. I would like comments, and suggestions on the topic. Information is available here: /Indiacityproject  =Nichalp (talk · contribs)= 19:47, Apr 3, 2005 (UTC)

Hi, could we make a page about governance, transport and common features about the states/city and just refer to it ?. I suggest this in the hope that it will save us effort--IMpbt 03:56, 4 Apr 2005 (UTC)
No. Each city differs in its transport and governance, some cities may have a mayor with a lot of power while some may not have so much power. It shouldn't be a problem though, we can always copy text from one city to another if they have similar matches. Nichalp (talk · contribs)

Kalimpong

I'll be submitting Kalimpong next week as a Featured Article. Would be grateful if a copyedit is done on the article.  =Nichalp (talk · contribs)= 19:57, Apr 6, 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for the copyedits.  =Nichalp (talk · contribs)= 20:21, Apr 7, 2005 (UTC)

India state maps RFC

I want to replace all the state location maps of India. I've made a test copy, image:IndiaMaharashtratest.png. Want feedback on the colour combination, (If colours aren't suitable, please mention the RGB values to replace). Some location such as the A&N islands, Laks., Dadra aren't clear, but it shouldb't be a prob. I'll replace all 30 odd states and UT's if there is a consensus as I don't want it to be a POV.  =Nichalp (talk · contribs)= 20:11, Apr 7, 2005 (UTC)

PoK and Aksai Chin need to be colored differently or hatched to show their disputed status. The thinner line used for the LoC and LAC is not enough to show this fact to someone unfamiliar with the situation. Some parts of southern Bangladesh (southwest from Tripura) and some islands along Myanmar look like the same hue used for India. Otherwise it's a good map. In particular, good work on showing Yanam and Mahé. By the way, would the absence of Sri Lanka cause confusion/disputes later on? -- Brhaspati\talk/contribs 20:45, 2005 Apr 7 (UTC)
Oh, sorry about the colouring of the islands, I hadn't seen that part. I had forgotten to depict Sri Lanka on this map (The layer was hidden). I'll be colouring the Kashmir (and Arunachal Pradesh) regions in a different colour. I'll keep this discussion on for a few more days for more feedback.  =Nichalp (talk · contribs)= 18:46, Apr 8, 2005 (UTC)

Number dispute

Hey, somebody wants to engage us in a fight over lakhs and crores over at Wikipedia talk:Manual of Style (dates and numbers). I fear I might be the only one arguing the Indian side, so do join in if you can stand it. (I hate wiki-arguments, they're always so tendentious.) The user in question feels that it is "absurd" for Wikipedia to use numbers that "nobody outside of India" understands. (And what do people inside India matter? [Not to mention Pakistan and Bangladesh?] One-fifth of humanity – how trivial!) QuartierLatin1968 19:53, 11 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Bhili language

Another user who saw my work on Bengali grammar asked me if I could help out with Bhili language. It was originally a nonsense article, but has been cleaned up and expanded. However, it could still use a lot of work. Unfortunately, I know nothing about Bhili, but if any of you do, or can find information on Wikipedias in other Indian languages, could you please try to improve it? Thanks! — Knowledge Seeker 08:11, 12 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Good work with Bengali grammar. I know nothing about Bhili. If there is content, I can help with formatting etc. A good language article should use Wikipedia:WikiProject Language Template. Using that was the first step that I took to getting Tamil language featured. -- Sundar (talk · contribs) 09:43, Apr 12, 2005 (UTC)

Thanks, Sundar. It still is very incomplete but I'll be slowly adding to it. Regarding Bhili, the template is a good idea but the problem is that no one really seems to know anything about the language. The box on the side is longer than the article. Well, thanks; I'll keep poking around to see if I can find anything. — Knowledge Seeker 09:59, 12 Apr 2005 (UTC)

The name Gill on Vfd

Could some knowledgeable person please look at The name Gill which is on votes for deletion at the momemnt. As far as I can tell they are an important tribe or subcaste, but I wouldn't know how to verify the information in the article. Kappa 10:32, 15 Apr 2005 (UTC)

The material availabe through the look inside feature is copyrighted, but we can always quote from the book. --IMpbt 06:57, 13 May 2005 (UTC)

Article on Indian Independance Day?

Is there an article on Indian Independance Day, the August 15th? looking around on wikipedia I couldn't get to one. Please throw some light on this one, thanks. --Neo77 11:20, 17 May 2005 (UTC)

Urdu-speaking users can now identify themselves with a "Babel tag", a User language template that puts standard text on their user page saying:

All you have to do is put the following text on your User Page:

Mahatma Gandhi

The Mahatma Gandhi article is on the FARC for some POV reasons which are not clearly stated. Maybe people can clear it up on the talk page or on FARC. kaal 23:40, 18 May 2005 (UTC)

The nomination is really weird, the link provided appears to be to a movie review rather than anything else (actually Gandhi is spelled as Ghandi in the url for the article), Most of the review assumes that Gandhi was a typical Hindu and does not seem to cover a lot of area. It is true that some negative aspects (most of them were related to Mahatma Gandhi's experiments and most quotes are taken out of context) are not exhaustively covered. But I think in the space provided for an article, we can best cover what good he did, than some conjectures and second guessing his intentions. --IMpbt 01:22, 19 May 2005 (UTC)

distinct features

I think, that geography of a region is incomplete without any mention of the region's flora and fauna. Moreover, India being a tropical country, has a great diversity in plants and animals. Lets start a new sub article dedicated to these topics. --Davy Jones 07:00, May 22, 2005 (UTC)

Are you referring to the India page or the Geography of India page? The former is just fine as it is, but the text can be accomodated in the latter. Why don't you go ahead and take primary authorship of Flora and Fauna of India? Regards,  =Nichalp (talk · contribs)= 07:35, May 22, 2005 (UTC)

Urdu Blogging

Thought I would post this here FYI:

http://ifaqeer.blogspot.com/2005/05/urdu-blossoming-on-internet.html

Should we start an Urdu Project Page? It would help in reaching across countries and continents to work on issues related to the language? Or maybe an "Urdu-Hindi-Hindustani" Project page?

iFaqeer (Talk to me!) 18:31, Jun 1, 2005 (UTC)

I'm not sure if mamy people here can read Urdu. Do you mean an 'Urdu language related topics project page' or plain "Urdu" as in Urdu speaking / translating.  =Nichalp (Talk)=

Stub section

This should be tackled somehow; bio and geo are described, but the eco and corp stubs are soundly ignored. They could get the same treatment as bio and geo, but I think it could be done better if the section was somewhat rewritten with five stubs in mind from the start. - shuri 30 June 2005 21:21 (UTC)

North India

Hello all. North India is currently a redirect to Indo-Gangetic plain, but somebody started another article at North india that could do with some attention. Once North india is up to snuff, I think we should move it over the redirect to North India. Does anyone want to contribute to this effort? My notion was to focus Indo-Gangetic plain primarily on geography and perhaps pre-Partition history, while focussing North India primarily on culture and perhaps contemporary politics. What do you say? Cheers, QuartierLatin 1968 21:54, 9 July 2005 (UTC)

I fully endorse the view - as a matter of fact, North India and Indo-Gangetic plain both should be independent article. We should try to make the North India article on the pattern of South India. As regards the article North india, the country's name "india' looks strange and appears to have been used as North India was a re-direct. Someone should do something to fix the things, I mean move the contents of North india to North India, and remove the redirection link to Indo-Gangetic plain. I feel that this may be done fast, as matter is obvious and much discussion may not be required.--Bhadani 04:31, 10 July 2005 (UTC)

Royal subtitles

I had a question about royal subtitles and awards given during the British Raj, should we still use the terms Maharaja/Maharani, H. H., (Rai/Khan) Bahadhur in the articles, article titles ?.

Use the titles. Make sure you create the appropriate redirects.I believe its a grey area on adding Maharaja XYZ, instead of XYZ. We have Charles II not King Charles II. PS Please sign you comments. Regards, =Nichalp «Talk»= 08:19, July 19, 2005 (UTC)

Indian Dowry law, request for assistance

I've been editing a page on dowry law (Dowry law in India). This page was moved from a page about the misuse of dowry law, which was an article pushing a single point of view. Unfortunately I know very little about the subject, so after removing the pov, the article looks little sparse at the moment. I'd really appreciate it if someone can take a look, correct anything that seems wrong and extend it generally. Thanks Zeimusu | Talk page 12:46, 2005 August 22 (UTC)

Any Telugu speakers?

Hi. In recent days, I notice that an anonymous bot is adding interwiki links to Telugu Wiki articles in many India-related articles. I was initially happy to see so many Telugu language articles coming up. But, on inspection, I found that not even a single word except the title has been translated and the full article is in English. Can someone who can read Telugu check the true status? Otherwise, we may have the ignominy of an Indian language getting demoted for falsely bloating up the article count to become 1000+. Please remember the Sanskrit case. Even though there is no harm in having a few articles in English for later translation (as we did in Tamil Wikipedia), adding a whole bunch of English articles may not be acceptable. -- Sundar \talk \contribs 04:20, September 13, 2005 (UTC)
