Indian city naming and dab conventions

For background info, please see User_talk:Saravask#Re._Kochi_article_name. To clear up the confusion, we need a unified consensus rule. We can either pick one of the options listed at Wikipedia:Naming conventions (city_names)#India or people can propose alternate suggestions. Saravask 19:52, 5 May 2007 (UTC)

Task Force tagging

I was asked by User:Ganeshk to use User:WatchlistBot to tag India related articles. I started with the Tamil Nadu task force arbitrarily. It has been brought to my attention here that there may be some controversy about what is included in the Tamil Nadu task force. I don't have any opinion on the matter, and will be happy to implement whatever the project thinks is most helpful. If that means reverting what I've done, just let me know, and I'll take care of it. I'll watch this page, and try to answer any technical questions that come up. Otherwise, I plan to stay out of the discussion. Ingrid 20:08, 27 April 2007 (UTC)

Thanks Ingrid for starting a discussion here. I would like to post a little background about this. Currently talk page tagging is done both manually and with the use of a bot plugin. The plug-in helps with automating that process, but it can only work with one category at a time. This is really time consuming. So I had asked for WatchlistBot's help. Cricket, Electronics and other projects are using this bot to do their tagging. The bot traverses through sub-categories once a week and tags articles under them. The sub-categories are pre-selected by the project, so the chances of getting false-positives are pretty low. I had asked Ingrid whether the bot supports task-forces. We had taken Tamil Nadu as a sample to test the bot handling taskforces. Other workgroups of India project will be slowly added after consulting with the individual workgroups and compiling a list of categories that they maintain.
Back to discussion here, Sarvagnya writes here, "So tagging it exclusively as belonging to Tamil or Tamil Nadu is inappropriate". Talk page tagging somehow (I have no idea why) gets related to ownership. The text on the template clearly reads, "It is maintained by the TN project". When the Karnataka task-force is handled next, Kaveri River will be tagged as per the categorization. There is no question of exclusivity here. I went ahead and tagged the article manually. I think the focus should be on the categories than the tagging itself. The articles don't get tagged randomly, they get tagged because they fall under particular categories that are related to the project. I would like to hear what others feel about this and whether we should proceed with requesting WatchlistBot's help. Thanks, Ganeshk (talk) 04:39, 30 April 2007 (UTC)
I appreciate the exercise you've undertaken. All it would have required was dropping off a message on all India wikiprojects letting people know of what to expect. Like I've already said, the simplest thing to do would probably be to just tag it as being maintained by the India project(of which WP:TN, WP:KAR etc are anyway subprojects). As for the ownership angle, I never meant anything on those lines. You misinterpreted me. Only thing is, in the past, couple of times, I've experienced how frustrating it can be trying to revert a bot's contribs. Also, if I am right, any article can be maintained by any number of wikiprojects. In such cases, tags like this will simply end up taking up lot of real estate on talk pages. This is one of the reasons I strongly dislike talk page tags. Anyway, if other Wikiprojects are also following, well and good. I can wait. I just wanted to pre-empt any ugliness of the sort that followed the India-Pak talk page tag wars. Sarvagnya 05:18, 30 April 2007 (UTC)
Sorry I didn't post anything to the project before starting. As Ganeshk mentioned, this is the first time I've dealt with task forces. Usually, there's only one "project" to deal with, and things move much faster. You've mentioned two technical concerns which I think I can address. First, reverting the bot's changes. I've tried to make this easy by creating an exclusion list for each project I work with. For Tamil Nadu, it's at User:WatchlistBot/Tamilnadu. If you list an article there, it will not get retagged as part of the tamil nadu task force. If you tell me about an article, I'll handle the details (untagging and putting in the exclusion list). If I don't know about a reversion, and it doesn't get onto the exclusion list, the bot might retag. Sometimes I catch and fix these, sometimes not. The other issue is the real estate on talk pages. You can see from the link Ganeshk provided that adding another task force to a page which is already tagged for India just adds one extra line. There are some people who prefer not to have any tags on talk pages. I personally think they can be very helpful for new editors to find out about projects and get involved, but that's just me. There are quite a few projects that use them, including Wikipedia 1.0. Now, whether y'all find it useful to put things at the India level or task force level, I'll leave to you. One other technical detail about how the bot works though. Tagging articles takes some time and oversight, so it's not run every week. I do it whenever a project asks me to. What the bot does regularly is create a list of all tagged articles for each project. This can be used with "related changes" to view a project watchlist. Ingrid 14:23, 30 April 2007 (UTC)
In the past, we used to have seperate banners for each of these workgroups. They were all merged to the India project template and a line was added showing the workgroups, thus saving talk-page real-estate. It helps recruit new editors to these workgroups. I take from your message you don't have a problem with the tagging (for now). Can we proceed now? Regards, Ganeshk (talk) 04:11, 3 May 2007 (UTC)
Absolutely. Please proceed. Now that things have been clarified and we can expect that eventually all the appropriate workgroups will share the 'real estate', I dont see any problems. But my personal dislike of talk page tags in general remains. (That however, is a different debate. not here. not now.). Sarvagnya 10:19, 6 May 2007 (UTC)

Salcette/Salsette

Please see Salcette and Salsette Island. There are two issues:

  1. I feel the name Salsette Island should be changed to Salcette Island since both come form the same source.
  2. It is better to move the articles respectively to Salcette, Goa and Salcette, Mumbai (or Salcette Island, Mumbai?)to avoid ambiguity and a disambig page should be provided. --Deepak D'Souza (talkcontribs) 13:07, 7 May 2007 (UTC)

Attention all concerned Indian Wikipedians (Now in WP:FAR

Attention all concerned Indian Wikipedians While doing a research on Geography of West Bengal, I noticed that the article Geography of India, a FA is in a bad condition, probably it will not meet the WP:GA criteria. The article was featured on June 8, 2005 that is about 2 years back when the Wikipedia was not much organised, so it got FA easily. If any improvement is not done, it will get defeatured within no time. I am pointing out some of the errors in the article:

  1. Excess importance is given to the highest point in the lead. Remove it and replace by other suitable statement
  2. Location and extent-eastern, western and northern tip missing, IST must be included, neighbours of India may be incorporated
  3. Political geography – must be written in a prose form rather than list.
  4. Geographical regions-
    1. Mountains
      1. Image:Indiahills.png and Image:India topo big.jpg must be replaced by svg image,
      2. remove list of mountains, no mention of upper and middle himalays,
    2. Indo-Gangetic plain-No mention of Bhabar and Khadar, Terai formation
    3. Highlands-Highest peak in Deccan plateau missing, Central highlands (Malwa) missing, eastern Meghalaya plateau and Karbi Anglong plateau missing
    4. East coast-No mention of Northern Circas
    5. West coast- Kachchh and Kathiawar coast in Gujrat, back waters in Kerela and presence of important ports missing
    6. Islands-
      1. Andaman- seperation by 10 degree channel, barren island missing, largest island, no of inhabited island, longitudianal and latitudial extent,
      2. Lakshwadeep- seperation by 11 degree channel, largest island, longitudianal and latitudial extent all are missing
  5. Natural disasters-Drought missing
  6. Natural resources-More data needed
  7. Missing parts-Soil, Natural vegetation and wildlife
  8. Overall-Lack of grammar, spellings, WP:MOS and must be writen in prose form.
  9. To prevent further vandalism- semi-protection policy must be applied to the article
  10. Inline ciations missing

This was the initial observation. Further comments are expected to improve the quality of the article. Amartyabag TALK2ME 04:53, 9 May 2007 (UTC)

Indian Stamps

What are the copyright issues for Indian stamps, which tag should be used? There are many images of indian stamps with possibly wrong PD-tag! STTW (talk) 14:54, 13 May 2007 (UTC)

Indian stamps are copyrighted. They cannot be used as fair-use. They are definitely not PD. There was a discussion about this before. I will try dig that from archives. Regards, Ganeshk (talk) 16:45, 15 May 2007 (UTC)
Pre 1947 stamps should be in PD. =Nichalp «Talk»= 17:28, 15 May 2007 (UTC)
Could somebody notify User:Bhadani (his talk page is protected) about [2] uploaded by him, which based on the above discussion should not be a PD. STTW (talk) 18:16, 15 May 2007 (UTC)
Fair use is for when things are copyrighted, but you get to use them anyway. See WP:FUC. Ingrid 20:29, 15 May 2007 (UTC)
The problem is with these images being used in biography articles. See Begum Hazrat Mahal. Fair-use does not apply in those cases. Regards, Ganeshk (talk) 23:01, 15 May 2007 (UTC)
Ragib's word on the subject, and a link to the relevant GOI policy, is here: [3]. Note that if the release of the stamp itself is a significant event, or timed with a significant event, then Fair Use might be applicable, as long as it is discussed in the article. Hornplease 01:10, 16 May 2007 (UTC)
The exact policy for FU stamps is :"For identification of the stamp or currency, not its subject.". If anyone is interested, Category:Fair use stamp images has a few Indian stamps and I encourage people to go through it to check they're used correctly. Hornplease 01:24, 16 May 2007 (UTC)

Conclusion: After going through all the links mentioned, I understand that the use of stamps in articles is only allowed as Free-Use when the artilce is about the stamp itself. One line mention of the stamp in an artilce does not justify its usage. Also Indian stamps older than 60 years are in the public domain. STTW (talk) 18:46, 16 May 2007 (UTC)

I think that's a little stronger than necessary. If the release of the stamp was notable, and can be referenced as such, then fair use permits use of the stamp as identification. Of course, this rules out "In 1995, the Post office issued a stamp" type lines. Hornplease 22:36, 16 May 2007 (UTC)
My conclusion is based on the vague definition of the FU stamps, which has resulted in the issue on stamps being discussed the third time over on this talk page. Perhaps someone could formulate a simple two sentence conclusion and have it mentioned on Wikipedia:Manual of Style (Indic-related articles) and be binding for all artilces under WP:IND. STTW (talk) 13:10, 17 May 2007 (UTC)
I think the guideline as written is overly restrictive. But I don't think making an exception for India would be a good idea -- much better to update the guideline for everyon. Can you give me an example of a stamp issue that was notable, and an image would help illustrate the event? If so, I'll take it to the talk page (WT:FU) and see about updating the guideline. Indian English

I think there should be a rule that articles should be written in Indian English, or at least its close relative, British English. There appears to be some concerted ploy by some to silently convert articles into American English, which is not only un-Indian but also goes against the language that the articles were originally written in. An example of this is the History of Tamil Nadu article. — Yama 07:44, 6 May 2007 (UTC)

That is a general rule but it sometimes get broken because of the large number of NRIs from the U.S. who edit Wikipedia. GizzaChat © 07:58, 6 May 2007 (UTC)
It's more than that. People are going through articles and deliberately changing the spelling of particular words. See here for examples. It's frankly insulting to Indians and English speakers to have people going around changing around articles like this. Those NRIs might have forgotten (or even discarded) what it is like to be Indian, but that is no excuse for ignorance of other languages and cultures. I might be just a PIO, but that doesn't make me ignorant of Indian culture and language. — Yama 11:06, 6 May 2007 (UTC)
Sridhar Dhanapalan (Yama), your comments are ridiculous. What do you mean by Indian english and what do you understand about Indian culture and language? Since when english became an Indian language? English was and still is a foreign language brought to us by a bunch of barbars who came to India uninvited and stayed for 200 long years. I think we should stop to fight over issues like Indian, British and US english, this is utterly nonsense. Let people write as they want as whether british or american, both are equally alien to us. Writing in US english is not an insult to Indians, and if you are still in colonial hangover, that's your personal problem. But please stop using such harsh, derogatory and generalized comments.
And since you are questioning the patriotism of NRIs, I wonder how credible someone like you can be in this issue, who still feels himself so close to the invaders. People who fought for freedom, certainly thought differently. Thank you. Sobuj 11:47, 11 May 2007 (UTC)
Sobujji, please read WP:CIVIL. Some of your points may be valid but it is discouraged on Wikipedia to talk in a rude manner. Regarding Indian English, clicking this blue link is what Yama is referring to. If you see Official languages of India, English and Urdu, both of which can be considered as "foreign," are official languages in India just to let you know. GizzaChat © 12:11, 11 May 2007 (UTC)
I think it will be best if we stick to Brit English. Indian English can itself vary a lot from place to place and community. Even in a cosmo place like Mumbai you can easily identify a persons background by listening to his/her English. --Deepak D'Souza (talkcontribs) 05:30, 7 May 2007 (UTC)
I agree with Yama. India related articles must be written in Indian english. Certain aspects such as spellings (color-colour), units of measurements (pound- kilogramme, miles-kms) have to be Indianized(i dont mean it in a bad way) so that it becomes more understandable to users used to this system. Though an arguement exists that its going to be foreigners who will access this information more than Indians most of whom already know these topics well. We can try and use both systems so that it will be convenient for everybody.

On the issue of the patriotism of NRI's and PIO's I dont think they make changes because they are unpatriotic or anything. Its just that they may be used to a particular way of presentation .(which unfortunately is more universally accepted than ours) -Titanomega 13th May 2007

I would agree that articles should be written in Indian English, though the term needs qualification. If it refers solely to British spellings, or Indian vocabulary (like "lakh", "crore" and "choultry"), that is fine. But I hope no one is suggesting including the grammatic idiosyncrasies of English in India (like "Where you went?" etc.). That would degrade readability. Besides, there is no commonly accepted standard for what constitutes "Indian English Grammar" and this varies from region to region in India, so it would open the doors to people making arbitrary grammatical changes. I think the "Indianization" should be restricted to the use of British spellings and Indian vocabulary.RajeevA 16:16, 13 May 2007 (UTC)
There is no academic concept such as Indian English. What the article proclaims as "Indian English" is actually a derivative of British English, influenced by Indian culture and Indian languages, esp. grammatical styling. Only British English should be used on India-related topics, although I wouldn't badger a person using American. :P --Zamkudi 11:22, 18 May 2007 (UTC)
Although there may not be such an academic concept, Indian English is a de facto language. "Indianisms" are widespread (in India) and permanent. But I agree that British grammar should be used, with Indian vocabulary permitted. Cheers. RajeevA 02:13, 19 May 2007 (UTC)

Question on Indian government photographs and public domain

A large number of images sourced to the Indian government are about to be deleted en masse over the next few days, and the question has been raised as to what, if any, government photos, publications, etc. are considered to be in the public domain (à la the US govt.). • Good point about the writers, I'll look into doing that. On the "non-WG states", I'll have a look at the numeric breakdown and report back on sizes; I don't want to proliferate lots of lots of these categories if they;'re going to be very small, though certainly I want to avoid them being over-general, since that'd defeat the purpose of the exercise. Do you think a general picture of an emperor could suffice for each stub type or would it be better if more specific and different images are added depending on the area, such Amitabh Bachchan for India-film-stub? Or we can remove the flags and not replace them with anything since I don't think a 20px image on each stub type would entice the reader to add information and improve the stub! GizzaChat © 09:08, 20 May 2007 (UTC)
Each of this templates will have a different image, and using illustrations/cliparts to photos at 20px should be prefered. E.g., Template:India-sport-bio-stub looks pretty good, and Template:India-scientist-stub isn't bad either. On the other hand, Template:India-royal-stub is completely unclear and could probably have a image that's clearer at 20px. deeptrivia (talk) 14:47, 20 May 2007 (UTC)

State of Indian art articles

This quote came out of Talk:Hinduism#Free speech but as the discussion was becoming more and more off-topic, I believe its pertinence lies here.

Also, moving somewhat off-topic, most articles in Category:Genres of Indian art are pretty stubby: Rajput painting etc, and generally Indian art is not well covered. The current account at History of painting is not good either. Johnbod 12:37, 30 May 2007 (UTC)

Indian art is a very underdeveloped area on Wikipedia. GizzaChat © 02:27, 31 May 2007 (UTC)

moved from Talk:India

BTW, I have noticed that on many an India-related page, various pictures that are more than 60 years old have been declared to be "public domain" on the basis of the Indian copyright law. I read the law recently and (to the extend I understood it), it seems to apply only to photographs taken by individuals who later became citizens of the Republic of India or photographs that were published in (and only in) an Indian magazine. In other words, it will not apply to a photograph of Gandhi published by Time magazine (say) in 1946, unless the photographer later became a citizen of RoI and the copyright was held by him/her. Others might want to weigh in. Fowler&fowler«Talk» 05:55, 30 May 2007 (UTC)

I don't quite understand what you mean. Will you please explain it once more in simpler language? Thank you. Universe=atomTalkContributions 10:19, 30 May 2007 (UTC)
I am not sure why Indian copyright law would apply to a photograph taken and owned by a foreign agency or person. For example, a picture related to or about India/Indian in Time Magazine would be the property of the photographer and/or magazine.--129.125.7.218 13:25, 30 May 2007 (UTC)
To U=a, Well, very simply the law applies only to photographs whose copy right is held by Indian citizens or Indian magazines and such pictures enter the public domain 60 years after they are first published. So, the Indian Copyright Law would not apply to a photograph of Gandhi and Nehru taken in India in 1946 by an American photographer of Time Magazine. Fowler&fowler«Talk» 19:01, 30 May 2007 (UTC)
I think you are looking at it only from one side, F&F (nice user name!). Indeed if the picture was taken in the States, all that needs to be done is to tag it with an American license rather than an Indian one. The cap is lower than 60 years in most countries.--Seraphiel 06:00, 31 May 2007 (UTC)
Not really. Under the American copyright law, images enter the public domain 70 years after the death of the photographer (and it is 100 years under the British copyright law). So, a Time magazine image could be characterized as "public domain" only if the photographer had died before this day in 1937 (or this day in 1907 in the British law). So, we certainly couldn't characterize a Time magazine image of Gandhi taken in 1946 to be "public domain." Fowler&fowler«Talk» 11:38, 31 May 2007 (UTC)
Do you have a list of images that are incorrectly labelled? =Nichalp «Talk»= 11:58, 2 June 2007 (UTC)
I'll keep listing them here as and when I find them. However, before you do anything, someone more knowledgeable than I should look at the Indian Copyright Law and make sure that my interpretation above is correct.
  • Jawaharlal Nehru page, this image whose copyright is owned by Corbis/Bettman (see here). I wonder if it could be changed to fair use?

Fowler&fowler«Talk» 13:55, 2 June 2007 (UTC)

That should be put up for deletion. Are you sure about the magazine only clause? I've modified the template [4] to accurately reflect the clause. =Nichalp «Talk»= 14:11, 2 June 2007 (UTC)

I am a bit confused about this. F&F, what does the law mean by magazines? Or did you mean Indian publications? I don't think the PD-law would be restricted to only magazines. If that is the case, many images will need to be speedily deleted. - Aksi_great (talk) 08:41, 3 June 2007 (UTC)

help in creating 2009 general elections

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indian_general_election%2C_2009

i contested the speedy deletion but you guys have to help me in creating the article.plz add more information

If you can create a good referenced article about this right now, it will be good. But IMO it is too early to create an article for this. Maybe some time in 2008 when parties will actually start to prepare for the general elections. - Aksi_great (talk) 08:35, 3 June 2007 (UTC)
You would need to add *verifiable* and *credible* information. Just one sentence won't do. You can start about the estimated eligible electorate, changes proposed, technological changes (like the last one had introduced completely electronic voting). You can also mention that the constituencies have been redrawn. =Nichalp «Talk»= 11:21, 3 June 2007 (UTC)

i dont have time for all this.plz help me in adding info manchurian candidate 11:42, 3 June 2007 (UTC)

Indian case names

In India (and also most other common law countries), when writing the name of a case, it is usually written like this:

S. R. Bommai v. Union of India

On Wikipedia, however, people seem to write it like this:

S. R. Bommai vs. Union of India

That is, they use "vs." rather than "v." to abbreviate "versus". Is this because of a special rule on Wikipedia? If not, I would like to correct the names to the more standard way of writing them. -- Lexmercatoria 17:06, 3 June 2007 (UTC)

"Honourable" East India Company

In April, User:Xdamr had moved British East India Company to Honourable East India Company (HEIC) without any discussion on the talk page, saying that "HEIC was official name". User:John Kenney moved it back, but yesterday Xdamr again moved it to HEIC.

It seems that some historians (esp. those related to the Company) use "HEIC", but "English East India Company" or "British East India Company" are more commonly used terms. Even the Britannica article doesn't use HEIC.

Does anybody know more about this? Was "Honourable" a part of Company's official name or was it just a formal prefix? (like "His Excellency Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam" or "The Honourable the Commons of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland in Parliament Assembled")

This article needs help

Dabboo Ratnani needs a proper bio, an infobox, and of course a complete list of celebrities who appeared through the years on his famous calendar. The sample image from his calendar also needs more critical commentary with references. Aditya Kabir 22:35, 5 June 2007 (UTC)

commons:Template:PD-India

The template PD-India template as it stands is incorrect. Under the S. 13(2) of the Copyright Act, the relevant criteria are that:

  • The work was first published in India, or
  • If the work was first published outside India, the author was a citizen of India when the work was made.

The first sentence should, therefore, read:

This image was created by an Indian citizen or was first published in India, and is now in the public domain in India because its term of copyright has expired.

The phrase "is in the public domain in India" is important, because the photograph may continue to be protected by copyright in some countries. A full statement, like in Template:PD-US would be better.

I do not have editing rights for the template. Could someone who does please make the change. -- Lexmercatoria 13:41, 9 June 2007 (UTC)

Since no objections were raised here, I have requested for it. Regards, Ganeshk (talk) 15:57, 11 June 2007 (UTC)
The new version proposed by Lexmercatoria sounds good. I know that Nichalp had already changed the wording once last week(?) in response to my post here. (And speaking of that discussion, (Nichalp and Aksi's queries) I did indeed mean publication, and not magazine. Thanks.) Fowler&fowler«Talk» 14:13, 13 June 2007 (UTC)

Notability of Sandhan

Hello,

I am currently trying to find out whether the article about Sandhan, a rock band from India, passes the notability criteria; and I would need help by someone who is familiar with music from India. If you can spare some time, please visit the article's talk page and post your comments there. Thank you! --B. Wolterding 12:01, 13 June 2007 (UTC)
