Requesting help in designing a barnstar
- All Indian Languages using wikipedians,
- Further promotion of Indic language wikipedias needs mass media publicity like Print,Radio, telvision , aproaching in academic Institutions.
- Also if possible a level of field support from network engineers in India for presentation and training in usage of Indian Languages and wikipedia can be a added boon.
- May I call on all indic language wikipedia users,to put our hands together to design special barnstars or suggest one which can be awarded to all those who will support our noble cause with actual field support among Indian education institutions and Indian mass media or actual field 'network'help to users.
- I belive we should award barnstars to such users who can support the cause through online publicity like blogs , groups etc. also.
- Please do share any good development in this regards to all indic language wikipedias at विकिपिडिया: देवनागरी टेम्प्लेट परियोजना

I haven't worked on the wiki for quite sometime. When I checked yesterday, I found the Category:Named passenger trains of India containing articles on Indian railway accidents, railway stations and Indian railway institutes. These articles as far as I know do not come under this category. I would have rolled it back - but since I have not worked on the wiki for quite sometime, I wanted to know whether any decision has been made, so that I can abide by it. I went through the archives, but couldn't find any discussion made on this. The Silent Contributor 08:05, 26 December 2006 (UTC)

Help!! All those articles that are not supposed to be under Category:Named passenger trains of India do not have the syntax for the categorisation!! Then how come they are there? The Silent Contributor 09:53, 26 December 2006 (UTC)
- That's because the category is part of a template. The culprit is: Template:Named Passenger trains of India. You should replace the category there. Look at the history of the category to see who has goofed up. =Nichalp «Talk»= 10:01, 26 December 2006 (UTC)
- User:Anil.pedgaonkar included the template [1] and after many edits, User:Swpb thought it was an error and made the change ( see [2]). So now what is it that I am supposed to do? If the template is the problem, then they should have used the template in the source, isn't it? Check Indian Railway Institute of Electrical Engineering - it doesn't have it. The Silent Contributor 10:56, 26 December 2006 (UTC)
- You'll have to undo the changes, so that the category and templates are fixed. =Nichalp «Talk»= 11:04, 26 December 2006 (UTC)
- I understand that I have to make some changes, but for using a template, shouldn't you specify something like template name? That is not there in the page - that's why. The Silent Contributor 12:03, 26 December 2006 (UTC)
- Could this be the problem? Someone (didn't check who) has redirected the Template:India-rail-stub to Category:Named passenger trains of India. Try accessing the India-rail-stub article. My feeling is that this has been violated. The Silent Contributor 12:10, 26 December 2006 (UTC)

Problem with Jog Falls page
The highest Indian waterfall is in Karnataka (Kunchikal = 1493 feet) The second highest is in Orissa The next three are in Meghalaya
Langshiang Falls
1,107 feet Meghalaya
Nohkalikai Falls 1,100 feet Meghalaya
Nohsngithiang Falls 1,035 feet Meghalaya
Dudh Sagar = 1017 feet Goa
Kynrem Falls 1,000 feet Meghalaya
All of which are taller than Jog!
Jog - "second tallest falls in Asia" --- WHAT!!!!!!!!!!
- I changed it to "one of the highest waterfalls in India" for now till someone can fix it properly. I guess the editor above has used http://www.world-waterfalls.com/database.php?s=T&t=G&category=country&search=India&orderby=height%20DESC as his reference. It seems a bit strange that "Kunchikal" gets so few google hits. http://www.factmonster.com/ipka/A0001781.html lists Doodhsagar (1969 ft) as the highest in India. Tintin (talk) 02:42, 29 December 2006 (UTC)
- I had always learned that Jog was the highest, but then saw claims to the contrary. One conjecture that I have entertained is that Jog is the highest single drop and the others may be multiple cascades. This would explain the discrepancies, but it is only a conjecture. --BostonMA talk 03:05, 29 December 2006 (UTC)

Wikipedia Day Awards
Hello, all. It was initially my hope to try to have this done as part of Esperanza's proposal for an appreciation week to end on Wikipedia Day, January 15. However, several people have once again proposed the entirety of Esperanza for deletion, so that might not work. It was the intention of the Appreciation Week proposal to set aside a given time when the various individuals who have made significant, valuable contributions to the encyclopedia would be recognized and honored. I believe that, with some effort, this could still be done. My proposal is to, with luck, try to organize the various WikiProjects and other entities of wikipedia to take part in a larger celebrartion of its contributors to take place in January, probably beginning January 15, 2007. I have created yet another new subpage for myself (a weakness of mine, I'm afraid) at User talk:Badbilltucker/Appreciation Week where I would greatly appreciate any indications from the members of this project as to whether and how they might be willing and/or able to assist in recognizing the contributions of our editors. Thank you for your attention. Badbilltucker 20:33, 29 December 2006 (UTC)

Help Indian medival empires
What is the Indian language script addition policy in wikipedia. I am editing Indian medieval history articles like ( Yadavas of devagiri, chalukyas Rashtrakuta etc) What is the basis of addition of any script in the pages of such empires? Yadavas for instance are Marathi empire but since a historian says they are kannada, its script is added. I have 2-3 sources for rashtrakutas and 2 for Chalukya,so in that way even I can add Marathi script there.Plz elaborate.—Preceding unsigned comment added by Vishu123 (talk • contribs)

Be part of local user categories as well
I think we should also become part of our coresponding local categories like to collaborate more effectively and locally. This will facilitate meetups like Bangalore Wikipedians meetup.
I am now seeing the (positive) trend of more and more locally relevant articles are being added to wikipedia and (thankfully) such pages have started surviving 'non notability criteria', thus it becomes more important to be part of such categories which can be used to enhance and maintain local information as well.
Global categories/pages like Wikipedia talk:Notice board for India-related topics can be fine for discussing topics spanning regions (e.g. 14'th Lok Sabha, Hindi Film Industry, Indian Railways etc) but not for state/city wise information, for such local data its better to use discusssion page of corresponding page (e.g. discussion page of Jhansi) and/or corresponding page(s) category (e.g. ) and/or corresponding user category (e.g. ). Could an editor with a better understanding of the issues related to this article and recently created articles like Kaikolar & edited articles like Sengunthar, please advise me. There has been some edit warring going on, as well as sockpuppetry, and I am tracking it down and trying to block the offenders, but I would like to understand this conflict better. It seems right now to be a dispute between two editors (one using a number of socks), both accusing the other of slandering a group of people, so some outside voices would be useful. Thanks! Citations: Mudaliar is originally the surname and title of Tondaimandala Vellalas
Please take time go through the following sources and comment. Anybody from south India ? People are just speaking derogatorily and claiming this is false. Its a well known fact in south India that we are the original Mudaliyars settled in Tondaimandalam. Most people know that Saiva Vellalars are Forward Caste even though we aren't Brahmins and the Tondaimandala Saiva Vellalars were known as Mudaliyars. The following articles clearly prove that:
Here are more valid citations which prove that Mudaliar is the surname of Tondaimandala Vellalas only. Both articles are journal papers with ample references as to the origin of Mudaliars and who the Tondaimandala Vellalars are. To quote a few lines from the second article (which in turn reference's the first one),
In a large report written in late 1798 and early 1799, Place had noted that the Chola Raja collected the “whole of the Mudali tribe called the Vellalars who were sent to settle in Tondaimandalam.”[104] Place also wrote that the country had been divided into territorial domains called kootams, a reference to kurumbar policies. Thus, Place could argue that the spatialization of the vellalas in the villages of the Tondai country had begun long before the British arrived.
The above statement was quoted from Lionel Place's (an English officer in East India Company ) report to East India Company. This literature is from 1799.
The Chola King is Karikala Chola. More quotes regarding how we were persecuted by the British..
“Mudali” is the shortened form of “Mudaliyar,” the surname of all Tondaimandala vellalas. “Mudaliyār”—a term that literally meant a person of first rank. However, in the view of many of the Company officers, the term “Mudali” carried a pejorative meaning. Mudalis were despised by the British because they were considered both essential actors and great threats to individual British and Company operations.
Scroll to the reference section of second article to see a list of some of the Tondaimandala Mudaliyars who were persecuted by the British.

This article is a bit confusing to me. My understanding is that this is not a very common usage compared to North American and possibly other usage which define East Indians as people who are from India as opposed to West Indians from the Carribean or Indians, which can mean either the indigenous peoples of central North America (or I suppose anyplace in the Americas except for the Arctic) OR people from India. Plus it does not have much in the way of references. Comments?--Filll 10:40, 7 January 2007 (UTC)

Spelling of Wodeyar/Wodiyar/Odeyar, Reverts Required ?
Wodeyar and several other related articles have been edited/vandalized?, changing the spelling of Wodeyar/Wadiyar/... uniformly to Odeyar. In my opinion which I have posted on the talk page talk:Wodeyar is that the spelling of a name is how the person used it and has been documented in history, regardless of the current transliteration rules. It appears to be the work of linguist rather than a historian. It can make the wiki article have a spelling that is inconsistent with the spelling used elsewhere. Hopeful that someone more definitive can act on this. -- Hgkamath 06:13, 9 January 2007 (UTC)
Template:PD-India-Gov
Just saw this template. I think that it will be very useful. — Ambuj Saxena (☎) 06:11, 9 January 2007 (UTC)
- On second thought, after actually going through the references provided, I feel that this template should be re-worded to indicate that only those works that are specifically indicated to be in "public domain" should be tagged with this template. According to page 15–16 of the guidelines, the individual websites are issued a guideline to indicate the copyright status of their works, and this doesn't mean that wherever such a disclaimer is not present, the work can be taken as copyright-free. I think the template needs to be updated to remove the confusion. — Ambuj Saxena (☎) 07:34, 9 January 2007 (UTC)
Proposal: Use categories than articles for avoiding lot of caste based, region based wars in Indian articles
We should not have articles like "List of Brahmins", "List of Telugu people" etc. The lists are too big, and people are adding all names without any references. We should have simple articles about castes, places etc. and should not have long lists. We will have articles about individual personalities and can tag them to a region, caste etc. Mlpkr 17:22, 8 January 2007 (UTC)
- No we are not categorizing people by caste. Castes are notable for the people that belong to it. PEople are not notable for the caste they belong to.Bakaman 23:41, 8 January 2007 (UTC)

Unless we talk about the historical Delhi culture in detail, I don't think much can be written about Delhi that is unique from other cities. The walled city used to have a culture, but the lack of soul of the present article merely reflects the lack of culture of the city itself. Present Delhi culture will revolve around keywords such as PVR, immigrants, Punjabi culture, Dilli Haat, Trade Fair, Republic Day, Politicians, etc. There isn't much unique to write about. Going into the past, we can write about people like Amir Khusro, Ghalib, poetry in general, courtesans, enunchs, the havelis, partridge fighting, the Sufi mysticism (Nizamuddin, etc), Lutyens, Anglo-Indians, etc. I can write some stuff, but I have no references to back it up at the moment. deeptrivia (talk) 18:41, 13 January 2007 (UTC)

Place names
I am in the midst of creating articles on the panchayats in Pathanapuram. My first question is, is it standard even to create articles on panchayats? Second, what is the difference between a panchayat and a hobli, or are they sort of the same? (Both are groups of villages, right?)
My third question is, since one of the panchayats is also called Pathanapuram, should the article on the taluk be moved to something like "Pathanapuram, Kollam District", or should the panchayat article be titled "Pathanapuram, Pathanapuram" or something similar? The naming convention is unclear and does not seem to be well established, so I wanted to get input here instead. Perhaps articles on such small places are not common and I should not make them?
Or maybe there is only one Pathanapuram (the panchayat) and I am mistaken that it contains the other places? Perhaps they are all just neighboring panchayats? If someone could clarify the format (village--> panchayat/hobli--> tehsil--> district--> state) that would be a great help! (Update: according to this, Pathanapuram is indeed the name of both a taluk and a panchayat. The question on naming convention remains.)
Thanks in advance for your help. Kafziel Talk 18:07, 12 January 2007 (UTC)
- Nobody has any idea? Should I just make up my own guideline? Kafziel Talk 07:09, 13 January 2007 (UTC)
Answering your questions:
- As a geographical entity, a panchayat would be notable.
- I've not heard of the word hobli, so personally I can't comment.
- Ususally we give the more prominent entity the benefit of the main title. Hence the taluka would get the article on Pathanapuram, if there is no district of the same name. The panchayat would be Pathanapuram panchayat.
Regards, =Nichalp «Talk»= 18:22, 13 January 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks very much for your help! I will bear that in mind as I continue creating articles. I'm not too familiar with the term "hobli" myself. I would think the article was a hoax or something if I didn't see Stifle and Rama's Arrow in the history. Kafziel Talk 17:08, 14 January 2007 (UTC)

We need someone with editorial skills to roll out the January newsletter. Chez is out of action since the last month. Anyone willing to publish the Jan edition? I am available to distribute it of course — Lost(talk) 13:05, 12 January 2007 (UTC)
- I can volunteer. What were the main topics in the past month? The swastika debate, the India bot, and were there any developments on the vernacular scripts and naming convetions at all. I did do a partial turnover. What were the big organistaional stuff apart from the wider debates? Blnguyen (bananabucket) 05:09, 16 January 2007 (UTC)
India-related content on portals
I wanted to share an idea. Portals such as Portal:Architecture, Portal:Dance, Portal:Film, Portal:Literature, Portal:Music, Portal:Poetry, Portal:Television, Portal:Theatre, Portal:Visual arts, Portal:Biography, Portal:Geography, Portal:History, Portal:Food, etc will definitely benefit with more globalized content. There seems to be especially a dearth of India-related showcase articles/pictures on these. Contributing to these portals with Indian content will also give a very good exposure to WP:INDIA. In fact, I think all wikiprojects related to these areas will immensely benefit from some Indian contributors. deeptrivia (talk) 20:44, 12 January 2007 (UTC)
- Also pages like January 28 and 1758 (date and year pages) are good places to sneak in an Indian person/event or two.Bakaman 00:04, 13 January 2007 (UTC)
- Yes, the basic idea is to better integrate Indian content with the rest of wikipedia, a department which I have found leaves a lot to desire. deeptrivia (talk) 01:11, 13 January 2007 (UTC)
- Check Special:Whatlinkshere/Pamheiba&limit=500&from=0 and note that a large number of date and year pages are linked to this. It should be easier for modern Indian content since they have concrete dates and years.Bakaman 00:54, 14 January 2007 (UTC)
Okay, my idea was more about front end articles like Music and Portals, which people are most likely to access directly. deeptrivia (talk) 17:29, 14 January 2007 (UTC)

While the article on Delhi is in good shape and an FA candidate, the article on New Delhi is in terrible shape and even has a ref tag on it! This is very bad when an article on out capital is so unencyclopedic. Please contribute. Thaa. Rumpelstiltskin223 06:32, 16 January 2007 (UTC)
- We're actually waiting to get Delhi featured. Once that is done, we plan to clone similar content to the New Delhi page and get that featured within a week. All that the New Delhi article really needs is a Delhi native to verify content, and a nice SVG city map. Incidently I will be in Delhi by the end of the month. =Nichalp «Talk»= 14:52, 16 January 2007 (UTC)
Photos
User:Pratheepps has uploaded a large number of excellent photos, but many of them had watermarks on them promoting his website. I spent days fixing all the best and most useful ones to remove the watermarks, and the following list is of images that are either heavily watermarked, not used in articles, of unknown importance, or simply not needed. I don't have the time or resources to fix them. Communication with him doesn't seem to be productive, so I thought I would post the list of remaining photos here.

Regarding nationality of Prominent figures and edit warring between Pakistani/Indian editors
Hi all!
Before I start rambling, I will just introduce myself. I am mostly a dormant creature, and I don't like to fall into lengthy discussions. Also, my Wikipedia access rate is small.
Currently, there has been an edit warring going on between many Pakistani editors and Indian editors over nationality of many prominent figures, such as Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar, Panini etc. Some say while they are Indian, others say they were Pakistanis (fork here myriad of arguments). I would really like to see us Wikipedians to reach a consensus about these issues. I want to inquire what is the current status for deciding these issues? With more arguments, I wish to reach a least common denominator.--æn↓þæµß¶-ŧ-¢ 21:51, 16 January 2007 (UTC)

The newest type of Featured material. Does anybody think we can nom India or Indian cities? (Please see what is a Feature Topic first) GizzaChat © 06:24, 18 January 2007 (UTC)
- In fact we talked about Indian cities earlier. At least we can go for Indian metropolitan cities. Mumbai, Chennai, Bangalore, Kolkata are featured. Delhi is GA and now in FAC. Hyderabad is in bad condition. So we can definitely go for it. A problem may be which classification system to follow to define a metropolitan city. By Compensatory City Allowance (CCA), the aforesaid cities are A-1. By House Rent Allowance (HRA), only Delhi and Mumbai are A1.--Dwaipayan (talk) 07:25, 18 January 2007 (UTC)
- Yes great idea. In fact I am amazed at how high the quality is of most Indian city articles. Arjun 02:54, 19 January 2007 (UTC)
- Hydearabd would need some work. At least it should follow the guidelines of Wikipedia:WikiProject Indian cities properly. Also needed are more referencing. Lets see if Delhi pasees FAC (that needs work, too). Then have to orient Hyderabad and probably run it through a peer review. Then we can go for a featured topic candidacy for Category:Metropolitan cities in India. What do you people think?--Dwaipayan (talk) 17:43, 19 January 2007 (UTC)
- I agree, I think the next collaborative effort should be on Hyderabad, and I think that Delhi will pass, as all the objections thus far are related to copyediting, and everyone has done a great job. Arjun 17:49, 19 January 2007 (UTC)
- Umm... Nope, culture still needs major work. I request any one interested to please have a look at some sources listed here. These can help to improve the culture section in Delhi, as suggested in the FAC. Regards.--Dwaipayan (talk) 17:52, 19 January 2007 (UTC)

Is Arani the same as Arni?
There is an article called Arani, Tamil Nadu and one called Arni, Tamil Nadu. The descriptions make me think they're the same city. Searching online has proven unhelpful in determining whether these are variant names for the same city, or two different cities. Most sites only list one or the other but this site says that Arni is a variant of Arani. I was hoping someone here would know the answer. Tocharianne 16:26, 21 January 2007 (UTC)

Breaking News!
I am not sure though I have information which i would like to share by "copy-paste";
I saw your message on my talk page: [3]. I have an important news to break: I have learnt from a reliable source that Jimbo may be in India (on his third visit within a span of few months!) on a day or two during the period (perhaps) 25th February, 2007 - 3rd March, 2007. Nothing is final yet - city, exact date, his schedules and so on. However, we should try to gather information and if his visit happens we should prepare for a meeting of Indian Wikipedians with him like the one we had at Bangalore on 29th September, 2006: An evening with Jimmy Wales. You may pass on the information to other Indian editors. I shall copy and paste this message on India Notice Board. His visit schedule may change too depending on many factors. I still remember few hours spent in your company at Bangalore on 29.09.06. Thanks and regards. --Bhadani 16:45, 21 January 2007 (UTC)
In case, I learn more or the date/ place/ schedule get crystallized, I will up-date the information. I would request someone to set up a separate page for this visit like this one: An evening with Jimmy Wales. I will try to contact someone to learn more about the visit if it happens at all. BTW, if this is not the suitable place for such information, kindly feel free to move to a better place. Thanks & regards. --Bhadani 16:56, 21 January 2007 (UTC)
- It has to be Ahmedabad, this time. Three admins from Ahmedabad, what more could you want? :D Also, Steward Yann was here a few days ago, and we had dinner together. ^_^ — Nearly Headless Nick 13:20, 22 January 2007 (UTC)
Hi, I am new here and want to contribute to this project. Can we have the featured article on Constitution of India?? Regards, Niraj
- Hi Nearly Headless Nick. Wherever it will be held, Bhadani shall fly there to attend the meeting. I am trying to gather more information it will depend on Jimmy's schedule though I presume. Regards. --Bhadani 16:23, 23 January 2007 (UTC)

Images from Press Information Bureau
The PIB website states that "[...]This, along with reasonably high quality photographs are provided on the website for free download by anyone." Does this mean we can use the articles and repository of images from PIB freely on Wikipedia? — Ambuj Saxena (☎) 10:58, 23 January 2007 (UTC)
- With my experience of dealing with various Indian government departments, I can positively say that in spirit thats what the website means. Most govt. deptts. are just not aware of the copyright implications so if you are looking for text such as GPL or GFDL anywhere on the website, I doubt you will find it. However knowing Wikipedia policies, we look for explicit copyright statements so this would probably fall under the grey area. — Lost(talk) 12:08, 23 January 2007 (UTC)
- You need to make clear to them that the images should be free to use commercially, and derivative use be allowed. =Nichalp «Talk»= 18:49, 23 January 2007 (UTC)

Are Govt of India images copyrighted or in Public domain? In Bangladesh, according to the copyright act of 2001, all govt generated images are copyrighted. In USA, all Federal govt images are in public domain. So, it may be useful to ask a lawyer about the status in India.
I know for sure that Indian postage stamps are copyrighted by India post, and it doesn't allow ANY kind of reproduction. --Ragib 18:11, 25 January 2007 (UTC)

Osmania University
I have been involved in merging AP-related User:Ganeshbot articles with those in the main name space and can say that I am almost complete. I have a doubt with Osmania University. The main name space article talks about the university, while the Ganeshbot article talks about the census town. Note that the latter does not provide Falling Rain links too, which Ganeshbot articles usually have. My question are
- Do we need info on the census town merged into the one on the university? Or should we have them as separate articles?
- Do we really need the census town info on Wikipedia? Does the Indian government recognize it as a census town? The Silent Contributor 10:11, 28 January 2007 (UTC)
- I have similar doubts over Kharagpur. Ganeshbot has created an article titled Kharagpur Railway Settlement, which I have never heard of, and am not sure refers to the town itself, or something else (on a larger or smaller level). Thus, a merger that may be required is pending. — Ambuj Saxena (☎) 05:20, 29 January 2007 (UTC)

Correctness of name ugranarasimha for the monolithic narsimha statue in hampi??

sort keys on India-stub
I notice there's a sort-key argument on India-stub. I personally don't think this is a good plan, since it deviates from the standard coding model at WP:STUB, particularly as it's a numeric parameter, and hence we could easily start getting different stub templates using {} for inconsistent things. Also, using it is beautifying what's intended to be a cleanup resource. There's now a better alternative available: DEFAULTSORT. Doesn't require any changes in template code, and better yet, adding it fixes the key for not just the "temporary" stub category, but any present and future "permanent" categories. Indeed, a further reason to get rid of this is to avoiding inadvertant overriding of said default. Anyone object to getting rid of it? Alai 05:24, 1 February 2007 (UTC)

Publicity for WikiProject India
In my opinion, one of the larger issues right now concerning WikiProject India is the shortage of members. Examples? Take the Collaboration of the Week. Barely anyone votes. Barely anyone helps (point in case: the Sculpture in India article is the current CotW, but the article is still rudimentary. Not at all what should come out of a CotW). So the problem could lie in a few places: either there is a lack of members, or my example is invalid because no one partakes in the COtW. Either case is equally disappointing. -Vamooom 20:06, 3 February 2007 (UTC)
- The COTW problem has come up before and you are right about very few people participating in the COTW. I am guilty of being one of them. However what I feel is we need someone to sustain the initiative. It was previously moved ahead by Ganesh and Aksi but both of them seem to be on wikibreaks. If one or two editors make a sustained effort towards maintaining the initiative, it attracts other users as well. — Lost(talk) 21:13, 3 February 2007 (UTC)
