MSU Interview
editDear ProhibitOnions,
My name is Jonathan Obar user:Jaobar, I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we teach students about becoming Wikipedia administrators. Not a lot is known about your community, and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the community HERE, where it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training, motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one of our students.
So a few things about the interviews:
- Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
- Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)
- All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.
- All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.
- The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics review). This means that all questions have been approved by the university and all students have been trained how to conduct interviews ethically and properly.
Bottom line is that we really need your help, and would really appreciate the opportunity to speak with you. We have been discussing issues of COI and neutrality and McKinsey & Company came up. The user seems to think that edits you made on talk and to pagespace represent a bias one way or the other. I ask, because the user is relatively new and inexperienced, you forgive his characterization of you and your edits. You are under no obligation to honor that request. - Can you please explain to me how a statement such as "People seem to abide by the MOS way too much" is not a good argument? It's true; I think people sometimes treat the MOS like it's a law that must be followed all the time. Query: damage to articles
editHi - as you seem to know your way around this site, can I ask for some advice - having spent yesterday struggling to deal with another editor who repeatedly filled the article on the Olympics Opening Ceremony with inappropriate capitalisation and titles contrary to WP guidelines, I see he's spent today doing the same to another article (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transfer_of_sovereignty_over_Hong_Kong). I don't want to get dragged into another edit competition with him - how best to address (if at all), please? IanB2 (talk) 19:41, 5 August 2012 (UTC)
- The first step is usually to take it to the talk page, though you should go to that user's talk page as well - if someone's violating Wikipedia policies, you should point this out (though remember to assume good faith); quite often, people don't know they're doing something wrong (especially if new to WP), or can be persuaded to stop. If the user violates the three-revert-rule (ie, changes something back to a preferred version more than three times in 24 hours), you should report this on the 3RR notice board - an admin will then assess the situation and usually block that user for a cooling-off period, provided that you have first tried contacting the user. (Note that although I'm an admin, I can't block someone if I've been editing the article in question.) If you're talking about User:Laggan Boy, he has already been warned; but the hope of Wikipedia is that someone willing to make this many edits will be encouraged to go the extra distance to make them constructive. You should also note that 3RR applies to all editors who revert too often, regardless of the merit of their edits (unless it's clear vandalism, a violation of WP:BLP, etc.). Hope this helps. - You didn't answer my question (regarding whether you checked WP:ITN/C). Regardless, your response is rather disheartening. You ignored consensus (at best) or unilaterally overruled it (at worst). You did so by editing a fully protected page, which was an abuse of the trust placed in you by the community. As Tariqabjotu noted, this was a rogue action, not a "bold" one.
- If you find fault with ITN's procedures, you're welcome to propose that they be changed. You aren't welcome to deem the community wrong and post a rejected ITN item because you feel like it.
- I couldn't remember why I had your talk page watchlisted, so I checked the archives. It turns out that I contacted you in 2006 regarding an inappropriate ITN item that you took it upon yourself to post ("What rules?"). More than six years later, it seems that you still regard this as an administrative entitlement.
- No one has requested an apology, but I'd hoped for an assurance that this won't happen again (if only because you recognize the community's disapproval, your opinion thereof notwithstanding). - No need to be humbled - the article needs to bring out this aspect more (the disaster was for Western Electric a bit like, say, 9/11 was for Cantor Fitzgerald). At the moment, as you point out, there are only a couple of easily missed sentences in an otherwise very good article. Newcastle
editPlease do not move Newcastle railway station to Newcastle Central Station again. It has been attempted before, several times, and was reverted each time. There has been no discussion on the matter since 2011, so any move must be preceded by a fresh WP:RM discussion which concludes with consensus to move. There has been no discussion on this in essentially seven years, and there's no need to adhere to a truce from way back when there were several difficult users insisting on various homebrew names for the station. - It is four years, not seven, since the last discussion. It is immaterial that the discussions took place some time ago: the fact that there has been discussion indicates that a page move is controversial, and per WP:MOVE#Before moving a page, WP:RM#CM should be followed. "Newcastle railway station" is no more a "homebrew name" than "Newcastle Central Station" is. The reason for not naming the article "Newcastle Central Station" is that it goes against WP:NCUKSTATIONS. The relevant rows of the table are:

- The article covers the main line station only, the T&W Metro station being covered elsewhere, so the "Any two or more of the above" row does not apply and the applicable row is that beginning '"mainline" rail (National Rail)'. The "x" we replace with the verifiable official name of the station, which as given on its signage and on websites such as National Rail Enquiries, is "Newcastle". Extended confirmed protection
editHello, ProhibitOnions. This message is intended to notify administrators of important changes to the protection policy.
Extended confirmed protection (also known as "30/500 protection") is a new level of page protection that only allows edits from accounts at least 30 days old and with 500 edits. The automatically assigned "extended confirmed" user right was created for this purpose. The protection level was created following this community discussion with the primary intention of enforcing various arbitration remedies that prohibited editors under the "30 days/500 edits" threshold to edit certain topic areas.
In July and August 2016, a request for comment established consensus for community use of the new protection level. Administrators are authorized to apply extended confirmed protection to combat any form of disruption (e.g. vandalism, sock puppetry, edit warring, etc.) on any topic, subject to the following conditions:
- Extended confirmed protection may only be used in cases where semi-protection has proven ineffective. It should not be used as a first resort.
- A bot will post a notification at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard of each use. MusikBot currently does this by updating a report, which is transcluded onto the noticeboard.
Please review the protection policy carefully before using this new level of protection on pages. Thank you.

A new user right for New Page Patrollers

A new user group, New Page Reviewer, has been created in a move to greatly improve the standard of new page patrolling. The user right can be granted by any admin at PERM. It is highly recommended that admins look beyond the simple numerical threshold and satisfy themselves that the candidates have the required skills of communication and an advanced knowledge of notability and deletion. Admins are automatically included in this user right.
It is anticipated that this user right will significantly reduce the work load of admins who patrol the performance of the patrollers. However,due to the complexity of the rollout, some rights may have been accorded that may later need to be withdrawn, so some help will still be needed to some extent when discovering wrongly applied deletion tags or inappropriate pages that escape the attention of less experienced reviewers, and above all, hasty and bitey tagging for maintenance. User warnings are available here but very often a friendly custom message works best.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. - I haven't removed any original titles. But simply because something is written in capital letters on an album cover or in a logo doesn't mean it's always written that way. To describe something as "stylized" that way is to misunderstand what that means. Furthermore, Wikipedia does not use non-standard capitalization. See the following:
- MOS:ALLCAPS: "Wikipedia avoids unnecessary capitalization. In English, capitalization is primarily needed for proper names, acronyms, or for the first word of a sentence."
- MOS:ALLCAPS: "Avoid writing with all capitals, including small caps, when they have only a stylistic function. Reduce them to one of the other title cases or normal case, as appropriate."
- MOS:TM: "Follow standard English text formatting and capitalization practices, even if the trademark owner considers nonstandard formatting "official", as long as this is a style already in widespread use, rather than inventing a new one."

editHi, I am newer to Wikipedia, and have noticed the few edits i have made on what seems to be a small page, get edited and then edits were blocked for vandalism. I am not even sure if I am connecting to you directly the correct way. I wanted to get some feedback to see what the issues have been with my edits, and what I did that was qualified as vandalism as I am not sure I want to keep attempting to contribute to articles. - We're trying to write an encyclopedia here, not a promotional blurb. Articles about living people need to follow rules like WP:BLP, but they're not written to make public figures look good (or bad). The aim is to provide as much reliable information as possible. Seeing half a dozen users repeatedly remove Mr. Foxx's original last name, just because he himself doesn't like it to be known, is WP:Vandalism. It's also strongly discouraged, but not forbidden, for people or their close associates or family members to edit their own articles, but if they do, they need to adhere to the same old policies. The JT Foxx article is currently semi-protected to discourage drive-by deletions, but experienced registered editors can still work on it. You may wish to review some of your edits to JT Foxx to understand why they were inappropriate and violated the Biographies of Living Persons policy, among others, so that you won't make those same mistakes in the future.
- This edit inappropriately uses a legal document as a primary source in a biography, which is expressly and strictly prohibited by policy:
Do not use trial transcripts and other court records, or other public documents, to support assertions about a living person. Do not use public records that include personal details, such as date of birth, home value, traffic citations, vehicle registrations, and home or business addresses.
The use of primary sources in BLPs is limited only to where it can augment something discussed in a reliable secondary source. - This edit inappropriately uses social media posts such as Instagram, Meetup and a claimed high school alumni listing for sourcing; none of these are acceptable reliable secondary sources for statements about a living person. You even got real close to realizing this when you wrote in the edit summary,
better refs needed
, but you should have realized that if you can't find those "better refs" for a piece of information, it can't be included in the encyclopedia at all.
I hope this helps you grasp the (admittedly complex) rules of sourcing for biographies, and I hope you understand the reason these policies are so strict: to ensure that Wikipedia articles treat living people in a fair-minded manner, eschewing tabloid sensationalism and gossip in favor of the standards of neutrality, fairness and balance found in high-quality reliable sources. - Mea culpa - I'd sat down to try to find some sources for some of these things when I got whisked away on account of a family medical emergency. I shouldn't have saved what I had done - those links were just the starting point for my own research (e.g. Foxx mentioned going to Loyola High School in one of his speeches - I'd just have to listen to enough of it to find it).
- Given all the surprising assertions (Steve Wozniak called him the closest thing to Steve Jobs he'd ever met - really?), you might expect there'd be plenty of info about this individual out there. Just being a radio talk show host in several major markets should be enough by itself to establish notability and provide plenty of details - but lo and behold, almost all mentions of the show are from Foxx's own websites (giving the impression of a short-lived infomercial, not a syndicated program). Administrator account security (Correction to Arbcom 2019 special circular)
editArbCom would like to apologise and correct our previous mass message in light of the response from the community.
Since November 2018, six administrator accounts have been compromised and temporarily desysopped. In an effort to help improve account security, our intention was to remind administrators of existing policies on account security — that they are required to "have strong passwords and follow appropriate personal security practices." We have updated our procedures to ensure that we enforce these policies more strictly in the future. The policies themselves have not changed. In particular, two-factor authentication remains an optional means of adding extra security to your account. The choice not to enable 2FA will not be considered when deciding to restore sysop privileges to administrator accounts that were compromised.
We are sorry for the wording of our previous message, which did not accurately convey this, and deeply regret the tone in which it was delivered.

How we will see unregistered users

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.
When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.
Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

Remove chalky teeth redirect please
editHi @ProhibitOnions, I see you put redirect from Chalky teeth to Molar Incisor Hypomineralisation in 2020. Sensible indeed at the time. But now there is a dedicated Chalky Teeth page. Any concerns about the redirect being removed now? You'll see I've made a comment under Talk on the redirect page: Talk:Chalky teeth

Improper article overwriting with redirect

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.
