WikiProject Eurovision Newsletter - October 2008

edit

This Newsletter was delivered by Grk1011 (talk). If you are no longer interested in WikiProject Eurovision then please remove your name from this list.

I have started a Wikipedia:Request for comment on this topic at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Eurovision#RfC on ESCKaz reliability. This discussion originates from questions on the reliability of the ESCKaz website and if it should be used in Eurovision articles on Wikipedia. It has now being extended to fully review all sources used in articles covered by WikiProject Eurovision, including ESCToday and Oikotimes. This is a very important issue to the project as sourcing is a key part of articles, and consensus needs to be reached on which sources should be used when, where and how. This discussion however has so far lacked a wide range of editor participation, and as you have listed yourself as a member of WikiProject Eurovision I invite you to add your thoughts. In particular more input is needed from editors which have a high level of experience with relevant guidelines/policies such as Wikipedia:Reliable sources and Wikipedia:Verifiability, and who have up until now stayed outside this debate, though all contributions are welcome. Thank you. Camaron | Chris (talk) 10:59, 27 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hey, just to let you know, the spokespersons and commentators belong on each individual country's page for that year. For example, not on Eurovision Song Contest 1975, but on United Kingdom in the Eurovision Song Contest 1975, etc. Grk1011/Stephen (talk) 13:37, 17 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

RfC on reliable sources for Eurovision articles

edit

A second RfC has been started on sourcing for Eurovision articles, you can view it at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Eurovision#RfC on reliable sources for Eurovision articles. This RfC is critical as it will help determine how current and future Eurovision articles are sourced, and as much participation as possible is needed for a consensus to develop. You are being notified as you are listed as an active user of Wikipedia:WikiProject Eurovision, and hence the results of this RfC could have a large impact on the articles you edit. Straw poll on reliable sources for Eurovision articles

edit

The second RfC on sourcing for Eurovision articles has now being running for several weeks, you can view it at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Eurovision#RfC on reliable sources for Eurovision articles. In order to help gauge the spread of opinion and draw conclusions from this discussion a straw poll has been started at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Eurovision#Straw poll. All project members are encouraged to read the RfC thoroughly and then cast their votes as they see fit. Rationales are still encouraged in the main discussion area above the poll, and participants can add appropriate new sources or options to the poll as they wish. Addition of content that is unsourced

edit

Thank you for your contributions to Eurovision Song Contest articles. I have noticed that you are adding a lot of content to articles which is unsourced. Please review the Wikipedia:Verifiability policy which requires that content that is challenged or is likely to be challenged be sourced to reliable sources. This is more important for content related to living people, such as your additions related to commentators and spokespersons; please read the Wikipedia:Biographies of living persons policy, which applies to all articles, including Eurovision ones. Please be aware that content that is unsourced may be deleted without prior warming, particularly if it relates to living people. CT Cooper · talk 11:42, 4 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

Hi Carlos. The Dutch commentators were found on imdb and if you look at the video recording of the voting when they pass the commentry boxes you may notice they're two people who resemble both Pim Jacobs and Paul de Leeuw and the french well it does say that when they withdrew from 1974 but they still sent a commentator. March 2012

edit

Welcome to Wikipedia. We welcome and appreciate your contributions, including your edits to Eurovision Song Contest 1984, but we cannot accept original research. Original research also encompasses combining published sources in a way to imply something that none of them explicitly say. Please be prepared to cite a reliable source for all of your contributions. Thank you. I have had to remove all the newly added information regarding Finnish Broadcasting of Eurovision, as it has been established the details have been obtained privately which against no original search WesleyMouse 17:45, 1 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

I absolutely disagree with that rule. Better an original and reliable source than a non-original and non-reliable one. Carlos MS (talk) 20:47, 1 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

Its not the fact that original and reliable source than a non-original and non-reliable one. It is the fact that A) the user who originally added the details admitted they had received the "original" information privately, which means that it goes against no original research; and B) the user cited a blog website, which isn't permitted as reliable sources, per [WP:BLOGS]]. Rules are rules unfortunately, and help keep the WikiProject:Eurovision to a high standard. WesleyMouse 21:00, 1 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

Carlos MS (talk) 10:51, 3 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

Welcome to Wikipedia. Please be aware of Wikipedia's policy that biographical information about living persons must not include unsupported or inaccurate statements. Whenever you add possibly controversial statements about a living person to an article or any other Wikipedia page, as you did to Eurovision Song Contest 1993, you must include proper sources. If you don't know how to cite a source, you may want to read Wikipedia:Referencing for beginners for guidelines. Thank you. It is vital that when you add content to articles about living people that they are carefully sourced. By this I mean sources which are a) published and b) reliable. Remember that most of the content you are adding concerns living people where the rules are stricter and more strictly enforced, for example self-published material is blanket banned for material about living people. While I thank you for your efforts with content, please give priority to verifiability over completeness. WesleyMouse 19:49, 4 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

In this case, I know the name of the article, but not of the autor. Is it reliable that way? Carlos MS (talk) 20:10, 4 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

Is there a website address that can be used as a <ref>...</ref>? WesleyMouse 20:15, 4 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

In this case, it comes from a newspaper archive, so there is no website address. Carlos MS (talk) 20:16, 4 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

Unfortunately then, it cannot be used, sorry! The key is the source. People who use Wikipedia for research purposes may rely on the source where we found the information. Without an website link to the exact piece of information, then it would become questionable. People may think we are making up information as there is no pinpoint source to verify what you are adding is true or false. WesleyMouse 20:19, 4 March 2012 (UTC)Reply
My best advice would be, "if in doubt, leave it out. WesleyMouse 20:22, 4 March 2012 (UTC)Reply
Sources can be offline, and newspapers can be used as long as they are properly sourced. {{cite news}} can act as a guide on what information is needed, and I would encourage people to use it for citations. CT Cooper · talk 21:10, 4 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

Reordering content on Eurovision articles

edit

Hi Carlos,

I've noticed you've reordered the spokespersons and commentators details on Eurovision Song Contest 1958. Any reason why you have done this? Its just that they are suppose to be listed in alphabetical order in accordance to country. This keeps things consistent across all other Eurovision articles. Would you be so kind as to reorder things back into alphabetical order - thanks WesleyMouse 16:06, 8 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

I've reordered them to the order of appearance and reverse voting order since the other articles are listed that way since I think it's a more logical order than the alphabetical one. Carlos MS (talk) 16:23, 8 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

Unfortunately the majority of articles are not order in the way that you mentioned. I'm actually working on a mass rollout exercise of new templates, and believe me, I've seen all the articles. Majority are listed in alphabetical order, as per some consensus going back years which can be found in the archives of WT:ESC. Take a look at ESC 2005; ESC 2006; ESC 2007; ESC 2008; ESC 2009; ESC 2010; ESC 2011; ESC 2012 - they are all listed in alphabetical order in accordance to the consensuses decision. WesleyMouse 16:31, 8 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

I know, but the order of appearance is official and the alphabetical one not.Carlos MS (talk) 16:32, 8 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

It doesn't matter if one is looking better than the other. If you're getting urges to be reordering the lists, then you really need to bring up the suggestion first at WT:ESC and see if other editors on the project agree or disagree with your suggestion. Never jump straight in on huge projects like the one you're doing, without a consensus first. From what I gather, the project is trying to keep a consistent style to the articles so that the entire project has a uniformed look throughout all ESC, EDC, and JESC articles. WesleyMouse 16:36, 8 April 2012 (UTC)Reply
Now that you've put forward your suggestion to WT:ESC it may be wise to revert your reordering on ESC 1958 in accordance to dispute guidelines set out on WP:PREFER. WesleyMouse 16:47, 8 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

Translation errors

edit

Carlos,

I noticed a couple of translation errors that you made on Eurovision Song Contest 1986 and Du er fuld af løgn. You changed the English translation to "you are a liar", which the actual translation should be "you are full of lies". I'm quite good when it comes to the Danish language. So I've reverted the edits back to the correct translation. WesleyMouse 18:00, 5 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

Thank you very much, I just thought the translation was too literal and not very natural, according to some dictionaries I saw "You're a born liar".Carlos MS (talk) 18:08, 5 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

Message from the Editorial Team

Bienvenue! Willkommen! Welcome!

Please be warm-hearted in encouraging everyone to do their best to contribute to all Eurovision-related Wikipedia articles, and welcome our new members to the project. It is easy for editors to get into conflict with each other, and things can get very nasty on the most trivial of issues, whether that be on the language of songs, the names of certain countries, or how we deal with incidents at the contest. In such circumstances it is worth remembering one thing: we are all here to build an encyclopedia, and the contribution of Eurovision to human knowledge can only be given justice if we work together and make articles, not drama!

  • If you would like something to appear in the August 2012 Edition of the newsletter, then please inform us at the Project Newsdesk.
  • If there is an article you think we should have? Request it here.

Happy editing!

Project News
  • When creating new articles about a performer or song, please remember to add sources either from Eurovision.tv, ESCToday or other reliable sources. If you're not sure a source is reliable enough, then ask the project for an opinion.
  • Remember to only add content to articles that is relevant to the article's main subject. Anything not in relation to the article may be questioned and/or subject to redirection to an article that would benefit it's inclusion. Again if in doubt, ask on the article or project talk pages for an opinion - communication is an important tool.
  • On the subject of communication, please make use of the article talk pages. If you don't use these pages to put across your views, then you only have yourself to blame if actions are taken that you disagree with and you end up wandering into edit warring territory.
  • The 2012 season of Eurovision has drawn to a close, and we now start preparations for the 2013 edition. While things will be slow to start of with, now is the ideal opportunity to do a clean-up exercise across articles relating to the project. There's over 4,500 articles associated with the project. If you happen to see a Eurovision related article without the {{EurovisionNotice}} template on the article's talk page, please add it. You can also read Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team/Assessment if you would like to help assess or reassess articles in our project if you see that they have outgrown their current assessment. There is currently one unassessed article.
  • And finally... a massive thank you to all members of the project for your constant hard work on collaborating and contributing to Eurovision related articles. Keep up the good work team!

References on Eurovision articles

edit

Hi Carlos,

How do you fancy a task that would be most helpful to the Eurovision Project? I've noticed on a lot of the Eurovision by Year articles that they are containing raw reference links, most of which don't contain {{cite web}} and/or have the reference field data missing such as publisher, access date, language etc. Some of the links are also no longer available and come up with 404 error code when attempting to view the website, and some links are to blogs which are not permitted. Would you like to have the task of checking through them and assisting me with a major ref tidy-up operation? Wesley Mouse 15:36, 24 July 2012 (UTC)Reply

An example of what I mean: Eurovision Song Contest 1996#References and Eurovision Song Contest 2012#References you notice the references are all labelled up; whereas Eurovision Song Contest 1975#References and Eurovision Song Contest 1980#References have raw links showing. WikiProject Eurovision: Recent changes

edit

Hello,

Please note that there have been some changes to operations surrounding Eurovision articles, these being that:

  • Template names have now been modernised and/or megred into super-templates, for example Countries in the Eurovision Song Contest has now been merged into Template:Eurovision Song Contest making it even easier to find everything under one template. If you are planning to create a new template, please keep the standardised titles in mind. Other templates have been modernised and a full list of them can be found here.
  • The Eurovision Song Contest and Junior Eurovision Song Contest articles have now been standardised to keep a consitancy throughout the project and to the genral reader too. Skeleton article drafts can be found for Eurovision Song Contest by Year and Junior Eurovision Song Contest by Year.

If you have any questions, please ask at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Eurovision.

ArbCom elections are now open!

edit

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. WikiProject Eurovision: Important Announcement

edit
WikiProject Eurovision
Important Announcement

Dear Project Member

Following a project community discussion, which was raised over the use of English translation columns on annual contest articles, and advice from the lead coordinator of The Guild of Copy Editors, who are extremely knowledgeable in regards to all editing practises and manual of style policies. A consensus decision has been reached to fully remove ALL English translations, as such content falls under the prohibition on original research, even if it seems helpful to the reader. This is because we have now to assume that every reader has access to automated translation tools that can always give them a sense of the meaning of the title in their native language; it is not Wikipedia's job to provide those tools for the reader. Which therefore means we are no longer to include an English translation column, nor are we to provide translation by any other means on contest articles.

Such information is currently in the process of being removed, and a new table formatting and layout style is being rolled out across all articles. Please view the new guidance on table layout at Wikipedia:WikiProject Eurovision/Format and Guides#Article layout. An example of the new table layout style can also be access via the collapsed section within this message. Thank you.

Re: Polish jury from ESC 1996

edit

Hi. Yes, there were: Wioleta Machowiec, Jacek Skubikowski, Patrycja Markowska, Robert Janson, Magda Makarewicz, Wojciech Karolak, Olga Kurek, Paweł Brodowski, Danuta Błażejczyk, Michał Borkowski, Anita Lipnicka, Grzegorz Szczyrba, Joanna Rawik, Jacek Makowski, Hanna Banaszak and Artur Jaworski. Robert Błaszczak was a scrutineer and Jan Chojnacki was a secretary of the jury. :) Serecki (talk) 13:23, 30 June 2018 (UTC)Reply

Thank you very much for your kind answer, but that was the Polish jury from ESC 1997, not 1996. I only know 5 members from 1996: Justyna, Kayah, Ewa Bem, Grzegorz Ciechowski and Urszula. I tried to contact TVP, but without success, since my Polish is not very good.

Kind regards Carlos MS (talk) 21:08, 30 June 2018 (UTC)Reply

E-mail from Romanian commentator

edit

Hi there again! Is there any possibility you can send me the e-mail from Andreea Demirgian saying she was the commentator in 2000? It would be really helpful for the Romania in the Eurovision Song Contest article. You can find my g-mail here. Greetings! Cartoon network freak (talk) 11:08, 6 October 2018 (UTC)Reply

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Eurovision Song Contest 1995, you added links pointing to the disambiguation pages Richard Fox, Susan King and Charlie Cole (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)
